Hariyali Amavasya – Welcoming Greenery and Monsoon

haryali amavasya udaipur

Haryali Amavasya – A perfect green day for recreation and enjoyment in Udaipur. The
beautiful festival is round the corner, waiting for a splendid welcome
by us on 30th of this very rainy month. As the name suggest, it is
celebrated on first amavasya of ‘saawan’ to celebrate the lush greenery
 of Udaipur.

Haryali amavasya is a day of extreme importance for us as it traces its
path from the past. The kings of Udaipur considered it as an
auspicious day and used to put on a fair for the common people of and around Udaipur. The fair gathers all the people together acting as a means of national
integration. Being a traditional fair, the tradition is followed unbroken till date.

There is a huge festive fair that begins from Saheliyon ki Bari and spreads its
glories till Fatehsagar. The various places midway are open for the people for free like Moti Magri, Saheliyon ki Bari. The loud noise and screams of the vendors fill this
 fair with extreme energy.
Guess what adds taste to this vibrating festival??
Yes!! The very famous “Rabri Malpua”  😀 of Udaipur. Adding to the life and color of this festive fair are ‘poopadia’, ‘paani ke gubbare’, colorful caps, chat-pakoda stalls, and various high rides and swings. Traditional songs, dance, food and costume escalate the verve of hariyali amavasya celebrations.

The fair is continued to next day but is restricted only till female
folks. The vibrant colors of the costumes and ethnic jewellery
catch the attention of all the beautiful ladies. A special care is
taken, that the joyous moments of these beauties are not stolen by the
men. All the females of the city can walk around, dine with friend
and shop for themselves without any obstructions.

This day is usually declared as an off for all the government offices and schools by the Collector of Udaipur City. In the plight of this, the various schools celebrate it a day before with
colorful and energetic programs. The social clubs running in Udaipur
celebrate this amavasya with enthusiasm and excitement through
execution of various cultural programs including tree plantation and
enjoying the feast together. Many delicious food items are cooked at homes also and families are seen enjoying Garma Garam Pakodas and boiling hot tea with roasted Corn at Fatehsagar.

The festival just adds to the unforgettable memories. The light scatters from the rain drops and spreads the feeling of brotherhood, humanity and love for the tradition.

But let’s not forget our duty and love for our very own city. This charming city belongs to us and being fellow citizens it is our responsibility to encourage cleanliness and spread the word of hygiene all over. It is seen very often that a traditional event is well
followed by the usual sight of littering roads, thrown wrappers and
peels of fruits which leads to various kinds of fatal diseases like
malaria and cholera. The beautiful lakeside is seen carrying rubbish
on the surface of water which masks its sparkling blue color. It’s a humble
request to all the Udaipies to keep the city clean, green and beautiful. Contribute in the best possible way to take care of cleanliness of this heaven on earth.

Let’s unite, rejuvenate and enjoy this festive season to the fullest!! 🙂

Be Prepared to beat the Monsoon Blues

Can’t wait to have a plate of garma-garam pakodas and hot tea sip by the stalls? But stop, make sure that what you are eating is healthy or not.

Monsoon in my own definition is after scorching hot summer, the rainy showers, which are super relieving for us, and are a hello to joy and pleasure. Though monsoon lessens our sweat, but it also brings many problems with it due to sudden fluctuations in temperature and moisture.

So here, UdaipurBlog brings to you some do’s and don’ts, health and fashion tips so that you can gear up for these rains.

  • Prepare your rain wears, raincoats, caps, umbrellas, waterproof shoes and plastic sheets. Keep plastic bags in your handbags also to prevent your belongings from getting wet in water.
  • Go for a walk daily in the morning. The fresh monsoon air will refresh you and open your skin pores for happy skin and happy you.
  • Don’t do heavy exercise. Instead go for yoga or simple aerobics.
  • Always take a shower when you are rain soaked. Never wear wet clothes without washing and ironing, otherwise they may cause itching.
  • Our skin becomes more prone to infections these days. So, do take care of your body hygiene. Add dettol or neem leaves to your bucket while taking bath.
  • Apply anti-fungal talcum powder to the areas which are more prone to infections like armpits, etc.
  •  The moisture and temperature during rains are the favorable conditions for microbial growth. These also results in poor digestion.
    • Therefore, while cooking, firstly wash all vegetables and fruits well, especially the leafy green as they may have hidden worms.
    • Add light grilled and tandoori foods cooked in less oil and less salt, loads of seasonal fruits, cereals and vegetables to your meals instead of heavy oily foods.
    • In breakfast we may add poha, sandwiches, egg, and cornflakes and avoid stuffed parathas.
    • Load up your kitchen and dining tables with Vitamin-C. It is a good antioxidant which helps in viral cold.
    • Add ginger to your servings. (Tea and dals).
    • Avoid packed juices and junk food, of which most of us are used to.
    • Drink boiled and purified water, homemade juices and soups only.
  • Prepare your wardrobe to drive everyone crazy with your looks.
    • Style yourself up with floral prints, pastel shades, sea blue, flora green. They all give you charming fresh look in the monsoons.
    • Go for cotton fabrics, loose fitting pants or shorts. These are comfortable and casual and also do not cause any kind of skin allergies.
    • Avoid high heels and slippery foot wears. Instead try wooden sole.
  • Exclusively for girls:
    • For glowing skin and healthy hair, apply 1 cup curd plus 1tsp of lime juice to skin and hair and wash off after 15 minutes under rain shower.
    • If you are suffering from crack heel problems, then soak your feet in warm water with a pinch of salt for 20 minutes, then wash with cold water and dry with towel.
    • A light body massage with mustard or olive oil is the need of season.

So take care of all the above, to stay healthy and charming and enjoy every treat of this awesome season outside.

Wish you all a very HAPPY and HEALTHY MONSOON.

A Perfectly Inspiring class by the Missile Man

APJ in Udaipur

APJ Abdul Kalam is a man of great vision, an eminent scientist and engineer who served as the 11th President of India from the period 2002 to 2007. A person with the pure and down to earth personality was in the city of lakes yesterday. He arrived at the Maharana Pratap international airport at 3:30 P.M., and went straight to the circuit house for rest, where he enjoyed the pleasing and every refreshing view of our own Fatehsagar. After resting for about an hour Kalam sir took the the class of the Lakecity students in Delhi Public School at Chitrakoot Nagar. One could also see the crowd waiting outside for Dr. Kalam to have a view of our very own people’s president. In his half an hour class in DPS, the ironic missile man of India firstly asked the students about what they wanted to become in their future life. In this process he found that there were majority of the students who wanted to become engineers and lesser wanted to become a teacher.

Talking about building a personality, he added that one should have the knowledge as well as the purity of the heart. In this process he gave the students the knowledge equation i.e.

Knowledge = Creativity + Purity in heart + Courage

In his speech he did not forget to mention the role of mother in the prosperity of the nation.  In the series of questions and confusion many students raised their points to the iconic man. In this chain he told the students about how he enjoys his role of a teacher. On the question about India’s possibility to become the superpower by 2020, Dr. Kalam again reminds the role of a mother in nation building and explains “If a child keeps his mother happy, he will sure keep the family happy, if he makes the family happy he will surely make the Udaipur happy, and if he makes the Udaipur happy he makes Rajasthan happy, if he keeps the Rajasthan happy he indeed keeps the India happy and if country is happy then what more do you need to make the country a super power.”

On being asked about his source of inspiration, Dr. Kalam did not forget to mention his teacher V. Subrramanium Iyyer. On a question about why India is always giving a handful of friendship to Pakistan and is not using this hand to slap him for the activities, Kalam quoted “strength respects strength” and explained that being a democratic country we are not supposed to risk the lives of 112 billion people who rely on us.

Dr. Kalam, the teacher of ideas and an environment ambassador inaugurated the Eco Club of the School by watering a plant. In the end with a conversation with the principal of Delhi Public School, she shared her experience about the program and also felt honored as the great personality was between them in their very own campus. The facility provided by the school and the arrangements for the program was excellent. And they wish to have many more interactions of the eminent personalities with the ordinary students of Udaipur in the coming times.

A glimpse of the event can be seen below via the following photographs:
