Famous Rivers In And Around Udaipur

The river is everywhere!
Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha

Indeed, rivers are the most beautiful feature of nature created by God. They’re the most celebrated natural thing by poets as they write sonnets on it, personifying them in every possible aspect which expresses beauty or spirituality. Udaipur has been blessed by, not just one, but nine major rivers. Here is a detailed description of all the rivers and their impact on Udaipur city.

YouTube

Banas

Origination– The river originates about 5.5 km from Kumbhalgarh, Rajsamand in the khamnor hills of Aravalli Range. It flows through north-east of Mewar before meeting River Chambal in Sawai Madhopur district of Rajasthan. The basin of the river covers the area of   45,833 square kilometers and is flows up to 512 km.

Ahar

Origination-  The River originates from the hills of Gogunda in the north-west of Udaipur and travels through for 25-30 km before joining the Udai Sagar Lake in the eastern part of Udaipur.

About- The river is the major river flowing through Udaipur. It is joined by numerous tributaries and sub-tributaries. The Ahar River and its tributaries are seasonal in nature and are on the peak of their youth during Monsoons. Ahar River lies at the center and its tributaries form a dendritic pattern. It is sad that the river with rich historical importance is currently the drainage body of the city and is filled with garbage and is extremely polluted and even though the word is everywhere, nothing is in progress to clean and protect it.

Som

Som originates from the hilly region near Som village in the Kherwara tehsil of the Udaipur district and flows for about 156 km in the eastern direction to meet River Mahi. Its catchment area is about 6,443 square kilometers.

About It is elevated up to the height of 600 mts. above sea level. The catchment area is extended over Udaipur and Dungarpur districts of Rajasthan.

@panoramio

Sabarmati

Origination- The River originates in the Aravalli hills near Tepur village in Udaipur district. Before reaching Gulf of Cambay in the Arabian Sea, the river travels through for 48 km in Rajasthan and 323 km in Gujrat respectively. It has Banas river Basin towards its east. The total catchment area of the river is 21,674 square kilometers of which 4,124 square kilometers lies in Rajasthan and rest 18,550 square kilometers in Gujarat.

We are able to protect the rivers as well which helps in indicating that how valuable the core rivers are to be preserved. Do let us know your reviews on udaipurblog.com.

Sited to the north-west of Udaipur and rambling over a stretch of 2.4 km, lies the sparkling lake, Fateh Sagar, which is one of the major tourist spots in the city. It is the second largest artificial lake surrounded by the Aravalli Hills and known for its scenic beauty, is one of its kind. The pear-shaped lake is walled by the Aravallis on three sides having a straight gravity stone masonry dam on its eastern side which has a spillway to discharge flood flows during the monsoon season. The blue waters of the lake and the backdrop of the green mountains present captivating scenery. One can behold the circumference of Fateh Sagar Lake by driving around its periphery and get a fantastic view of the entire lake. The entire circumference of the lake could be covered by road via Moti Magri Road, Fateh Sagar Drive, Rani Road and witnessing the Rajiv Gandhi park, Sanjay park and the winding road on the eastern route to get a picturesque view of the lake, and the Aravali Hills surrounding it

The North-eastern embankment is known as the ‘Pal’ and is usually known as the “Heart of Udaipur” by the city people. Pal is also the place for morning-evening walks by locals while travellers love experiencing a serene lake view walk on the long stretched pathway . The lake is primarily filled by Swaroop sagar link channel at the southern end and Madar channel on the north-eastern end. The runoff emerging from surrounding hills drains into nearby smaller lakes such as Sisarma, Madar, Nandeshwar, etc and from where the water is channelized through a systematic network of water streams. The lake’s excess water is accelerated to Udaisagar, from overflow section on the eastern side masonry dam during monsoons.

The lake comprises of three small islands. The largest of the three is the garden islands, known as Nehru Park, which no holidaymaker should ever miss to visit. The central attraction of Nehru Park, is the boat shaped café, which is the hot favorite amongst those who love to sip coffee and snacks, as they take in the reigning tranquility and serenity of the place. History –

Fateh Sagar Lake was initially constructed by Maharana Jai Singh in 1678 AD. However, after a span of 200 years, the earthen bund, which formed the lake, was washed away during floods, thereby razing the lake. Thereafter, Maharana Fateh Singh built the Connaught Dam on the Lake to mark the visit of Duke of Connaught, son of Queen Victoria in 1888 AD. The dam enlarged the lake and was later renamed as Fateh Sagar Lake.

Historic Fatehsagar

Before independence, the water from this lake was hardly used for any purpose and it remained more or less full throughout the year. The lake and the three islands, that were full of vegetation, were home to a large variety of flora and fauna like aquatic birds, waders, pythons, otters, crocodiles and many species of fishes. There were strict restrictions on fishing. The human interference was restricted to bathing and washing of clothes and that too in a limited area. Apart from this, there were numerous trees at the periphery of the lake.

After independence, the trees at the edge of the lake were chopped off. Government allotted contract for killing of crocodiles in early fifties. Government introduced fish contractors and it resulted in considerable depletion of fish fauna. The islands were developed into tourist spots. Several marshy places with reeds and other types of aquatic fauna and flora vanished. Residential houses came up around this lake and human interference increased, thus resulting in an increase in the usage of water from the lake and pollution.

Due to over exploitation of the lake, it came on the brink of drying many times and in the year 2003, the lake dried entirely for the first time. However, the lake has continued to replenish over the years.

Fateh Sagar you Know, Facts Behind you Don’t

India accommodates 128 lakes, of which five most beautiful lakes are situated in the City of Lakes, Udaipur. And whether we talk about Udaipur’s heart or what makes it so amusing, it’s the lakes.

Fateh sagar sunset

But when it comes to everybody’s favourite one, Fateh Sagar will certainly receive all the votes. It is the most loved site among both locals and visitors. The lake is adored because of its scenery and sunsets which never fail to impress. Although this place has also a great history glued with itself.

The name of the lake Fateh Sagar was coined after Maharana Fateh Singh Ji , but few are aware of its earlier origins. Let’s explore the stories below to discover the facts.

Initially Constructed in 1678AD

Fateh Sagar Lake was formerly constructed by Maharana Jai Singh Ji in 1678 AD. But due to heavy floods during the reign of Maharana Bhim Singh Ji, the earthen bund which formed the lake was washed away. Hence approximately 200 years later, Maharana Fateh Singh Ji bore the responsibility on his shoulders and rebuilt it.

Maharana Jai Singh Ji

Formerly Known as Devali-Ka-Talaab

It is yet another lesser-known fact that the lake was known as Devali ka Talab. Constructed in 1680 by Maharana Jai Singh Ji, it was situated 1.5 miles away from Udaipur. It was built near the village Devali and hence was named after it.

These details carry the best knowledge of how hidden details of Fateh Sagar is known and by this there is assimilation of how accurately the effectiveness of Fateh Sagar’s history is admired by people.

Connaught Dam Enlarged to Fateh Sagar Lake

Earlier in the 1670s the dam near Devali Lake wasn’t built too high. And in 1889, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, the third son of Queen Victoria, visited Udaipur. So to commemorate his visit, Maharana Fateh Singh Ji decided to raise the pal (dam) of Devali-ka-Talaab by 20 feet.

The Duke laid the foundation of the dam with the fortune to put the first brick. The Fateh Sagar Ki Pal, you know now, was given the name of “Connaught Bandh” after him.

Later in return the Prince suggested that the Devali-Ka-Talaab which was an enlarged and restored water reservoir, be called “Fateh Sagar”. Hence the lake was renamed after Maharana Fateh Singh Ji.

Engineer Thomson also proposed the canal that would link Pichola with Fateh Sagar, which became a reality once the height of pal was raised.

A Fun Fact :

  • In 1898, on the occasion of Hariyali Amavasya, Chawdi Rani along with Maharana Fateh Singh Ji went to see the overflowing Fateh Sagar.
They were so happy to watch it and hence announced a fair to be organised on Hariyali Amavasya every year.
Maharani also asked Rana Ji to keep a separate day just for the ladies. And that’s how we all enjoy the most delightful fair with joy.

Although it’s been more than a century to that and every Udaipurite still awaits & gets excited the same to see the overflowing Fatehsagar every Monsoon. Same goes with this year. We are eagerly waiting for that to happen.
