Shilpgram – Site for Crafts and Arts fair in Udaipur

shilpgram

Shilpgram is a hindi word which translates itself to Village Of Art And Craft. Shilpgram is situated 3kms west to the famous Fateh Sagar Lake in Udaipur.

It’s a State sponsored living musium stretched on a 70 acre land on the foothills of Aravali. Shilpgram or the Rural Arts and Crafts Village in Udaipur is one of the seven centers of the West Zone Cultural Center (WZCC), established by the government in 1986.

Every year in the end of the year, a 10-day festival is organised which shows glimpses of the complete rural India within the 70 acre itself. There are 26 representative huts of member states in this craft village, incorporating traditional architectural features of different ethnic groups residing within the Zone.

Artisans and craftsmen from all over the nation join this festival to display their best outcome of their art and culture for which their zone is best renowned. Be it the warm woolens from Jammu and Kashmir, or even the Bamboo artwork from far east states, the famous Banarasi silk sarees, along with our very own Rajasthani craftwork, from hand-crafted key chains and bangles, to glasswork, pottery and even furnitures, everything can be seen waiting for you at the festival. All the items are not for display alone; you may purchase the things available with your free will, and take them home with you.

At the entrance you find the traditional dancers welcoming you. Mud huts with thatched roofs make out the splendid village scene, with you yourself witnessing it live. Hungry after walking so long? There are plenty of mouth watering food and “DESI” fast-food items from different traditions, in your way.

Moreover, in these 10-days every evening you can also witness the rich culture of India, via the juvenile traditional and cultural folk programmes, each day with a different theme and different heart throbbing programmes on the open-theatre stage at shilpgram.

Not only Udaipies(Udaipur Guys), but people from all across the globe eagerly wait for this once-a-year fest, and to be a part of it. So what are you waiting for dear udaipies? Just make up your mind and be proud to be a part of this unique fest of its kind, going back to your rich cultural roots.

Definitely – Venice of the East

Udaipur – the city of  lakes and the Venice of the East is definitely a feast to the eyes, especially after the monsoons . That is the time when it looks lush green and the glossy greenery adds up to the beauty . It is one of the most sought after destinations both for the domestic and the foreign tourists. This year we had a good share of rains and the lakes got filled to the brim . The onlookers were filled with pleasure .  After sunset, the rippling water with the moving reflections of the lights was a scene worth watching and one could go on gazing and inhaling the beauty for hours on end. The drive around Fatehsagar lake is awesome and Pichola lake is equally mesmirising.
A chunk of the Aravalli hills is in Udaipur and this is an add on to the charm of this small homely city. The sudden rise and fall of hills takes one by surprise at times. But ofcourse the surprise is a pleasant one.In no time one gets used to the place and one can move around without any hassles.
It has numerous gorgeous hotels which were originally palaces. The echo of the gallant and chivalrous tales of the Maharajas who once trod on this soil  greet our ears even today. The charisma of these palaces is breath-taking . The visitors are stunned and what they see with their own eyes becomes incredible. Its a city which one must have on one’s holiday list. If you have not made it to this place so far, then what are you waiting for ? Just book a ticket and be there and have the lovely experience.

Fatehsagar Lake

To be found to the north of Lake Pichola, Maharana Jai Singh as a medium-sized perennial storage reservoir originally built the pretty Fateh Sagar Lake of Udaipur in 1678. Hills on three sides and Pratap Memorial on the fourth surround it and thus it presents captivating scenery. Since it had been destroyed due to heavy rains, Maharana Fateh Singh took it upon himself to bear the pains and expenditure of reconstructing the dam and it was in honor of his contributions to the place that the lake was named after him.

Today, in its present capacity, this lake serves as a second major source of drinking water of the city of Udaipur. One may opt to drive along the east bank while enjoying the scenic beauty of the lakeside or go in for a boat ride to any of the three islands of the lake that is a sure to be a pleasure with their distinct fervor and panoramic location. The largest of the three islands is indeed a lovely garden known as Nehru Park, which has been named after the esteemed first Prime Minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru. Its focal point is the boat shaped café, which is a hot favorite amongst the visitors who love to sip coffee as they take in the reigning tranquility and serenity of the place. The second island is for more scientific-minded people, especially those who love astronomy, as this is the place where a high-resolution solar observatory is strategically installed. It is considered a prime site for obtaining good solar images because of its secluded location with clear skies above and clear waters below it. The smallest island to the west has proved itself useful by providing a site to support a jet fountain. Lake Fateh Sagar is connected to Lake Pichhola through a canal that has gates. The lake has shape of a pear but has scant vegetation surrounding it.

Sajjangarh palace

5 kilometers to the west of Udaipur there is a hill named Bansdara which is 3100 feet above the sea level. Located at the highest altitude of the hill is the “Sajjangarh Palace” also known as “Monsoon Palace” which gives an excellent view in all the directions.

The best thing about this place is the serpentine road to reach the palace. As this was the highest place in neighborhood, Maharana Sajjan Singhji started the construction of the palace for his summer residence. Original plan for its construction was for nineteen storeyed structure. However, by the time one storey and half was constructed, the Maharana died prematurely in 1884 A.D. and the plans were curtailed. Maharana Fateh Singhji however completed the palace on the hill which contain apartment for ladies, a large Gateway and an enclosing wall.

This is now derelict palace dominates the skyline 2468 feet high atop of bansdara mountain. It is visible from a great distance and affords splendid scenic views which has made it one of the best place of Udaipur. The edifice looks its best during the rainy season which no one would like to miss.
