Ganesh Chaturthi 2012 – Ganpati Bappa Moriya!

“Vakratunda Mahaakaaya Suryakotee Sama Prabha,
Nirvighnam kuru mey Deva, Sarva kaaryeshu Sarvadaa”

Lord Ganesh, the elephant headed God, the son of Shiva and Parvati, invoked at every beginning and every start.

He is the god of Prosperity, Fortune and Wisdom and today is his day. He rides on his vehicle, a mouse, and is well known for fulfilling the wishes and desires of his devotees. Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganeshotsava aka ‘Vinayak Chaturthi’, is a great Ganesha festival. It is the spiritual and joyful journey of 10 days, which is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha in the Bhaadrapada month of Hindu Calendar.

This festival of Ganpati Bappa got major exposure by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja, the great Maratha ruler, who promoted this festival in order to promote culture and nationalism. Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, played a major role in its revival too; he promoted and encouraged Ganesh Chaturthi in order to spread the message of freedom struggle and to defy the Britishers who had banned public assemblies.  In addition to celebration across the whole country, it is marked as a full day celebration in the calendars of houses even outside India. The grandest festivity can be witnessed in the western state of Maharashtra where this ‘utsav’ lasts for 10 days, ending on the day of ‘Ananta Chaturdashi’.

This huge festival starts with the Pranpratishtha (installation) of beautifully designed and decorated idols of Ganesha, made of Plaster of Paris or clay, with chanting of mantras. The idols may vary in size, suitable for both, houses and community Pandals. The pandals are specially decorated for this festival. And for the next 10 days, there is a joyful sequence of Ganesh Vandana, Aarti and Puja, done both in morning and evening. The most popular sweet dish during this festival includes the modak (A dumpling prepared from rice or wheat flour stuffed with fresh or dry-grated coconut, jaggery, dry fruits and other condiments). These Modaks or Modakam are either steam-cooked or fried. Another popular sweet dish includes Karanji which is quite similar to the modak in taste but it has a semicircular shape.

On the 11th day, the Ganesh Murti is taken to a river, lake, sea or pond for submersion, amongst a huge crowd of merry people, singing, dancing and chanting all together; “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Agle Baras Tu Jaldi Aaa”. This event of utmost enthusiasm, merry making and bidding farewell to the Lord is called Visarjan, which is a symbol of Ganesh Ji taking all the sins, pain and mistakes of his devotees with him.

A day full of celebrations and festivity – Meethi Eid

sewaiyan

Men and women, boys and girls, all in happy colors, in a joyful mood, elders giving eidi to the youngers, market full of various kind of food and sweets, fragrance of sawaiyan from every kitchen, decorated houses, beautiful girls with beautiful mehandi and bangles in their hands, kids playing around merrily.

This is the picture perfect scene of today’s meethi eid. The day most awaited by all the Muslims.

There are two Eid in Islam religion; this is the first one, named Eid-al-Fitar, the festival of fast breaking. On the first day of Shawaal, the 10th month of Muslim calendar, this Eid is celebrated, following the religious month of Ramazan, which is the month of fasting; the holy Quran was reveled in this month. The entire month of fasting is celebrated as an achievement of every Muslim individual in the service of Allah. It is a way of giving thanks and to pay their gratitude to Allah. Muslims assembles at the Eidgah in a very brotherly and joyful manner. After the namaz, they wish each other, give eidi to their younger ones, go to their relatives place and then have the sweets altogether.

Among these celebrations, there is also a place for the deceased; people remember them by praying for their souls, they help the needy people by expressing their helps, show consolation to the grieved and sick.

Eid, means happiness and festivity, it should be celebrated beyond all the restrictions formed due to caste system, different religions and other social problems.  We all should celebrate this day in the same manner as we celebrate our own festivals, as these festive days are the days of pure happiness beyond restrictions.

Udaipurblog wishes a very Happy Eid to all of you.  🙂

Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day

Dehydration in Summers: How to manage it

Aaah, Summers!! blazing red hot sun over your head, elevating mercury,  hot humid air, sweating, itching, thirst, sun burns, fainting, and dehydration, these are the common words with which we welcome the summers. In summers, when the temperature rises our body tries to sweat more to maintain an equilibrium between the inside and outside temperature difference.  Higher the temperature more will be the sweating to regulate the temperature of our body and more will be the loss of water from the body.

Dehydration | UdaipurBlog
Credits: gymjournalblog.com

Dehydration is the most common problem of hot summers. It is the condition when body loses more water than it holds. The human body is about 60-70 % water depending on its size. In normal metabolic processes, sweating and urinating, there is loss of water, and this gets fasten with the onset of summers. It may occur due to many etiologies, like sun heat, diarrhea, vomiting, or due to any long term illness. Replenishment of this loss is very necessary for a healthy living. Here I am compiling few tips which may help you hydrating this summer.

  • Drink lots and lots of water. It will keep your body hydrated. We should drink at least 8-10 glass of water a day to battle the heat and replenish the water lost through excessive sweating.
  • Eat fruits. Seasonal fruits such as watermelon and cucumber are the best way to avoid being dehydrated this season. These have high water and fiber content and are the best options as summer snacks and when we don’t prefer the tasteless water. Plus these fruits will keep you hydrated and healthy in summers.
  • Add water content in your food. Salad, sprouts along with vegetables such as spinach, tomato, lauki (bottleground) similarly dairy products such as milk, curd and paneer can provide us with enough water to avoid the loss.
  • Other sources of water. Coconut water, lassi, buttermilk (chaach), sugarcane juice and juices of seasonal fruits will be great options to regain the minerals and fluids lost.
  • Avoid heavy, spicy and fried food items. Pickle, fried chips, namkeen and papad should be avoided.
  • Work hard, but indoor workout will be better. Exercise is a must to keep you fit and healthy. But with the increasing temperature, you need to work out with caution, because your hard work will make you sweat, more calorie burn and more water loss. Taking breaks in between and sipping more water will keep you well hydrated.
  • Clothing plays an important role in preventing perspiration. Don’t opt dark colored, tight fitted dresses; instead go for light flourishing colors, cotton fabric, loose fitted with half sleeves.  This will give your skin a chance to breathe.
  • Avoid alcohol. Alcohol or other items which contain alcohol acts as a diuretic, that is, they increase the frequency of urination.
  • Cover yourself with scarf and umbrella while roaming around. This will prevent your skin tanning, hair drying and sunstroke.
  • In a case of vomiting, diarrhea, immediately consult your doctor.

These are few steps to beat the unbearable heat and the accompanying dehydration in this season. So don’t keep yourself away from the fun. Grab the hats, water bottles, guard yourself safely and face the challenge of harsh hot rays of sun.

Hero of the Age – Maharana Pratap

Maharana Pratap

Today is Maharana Pratap Jayanti, birth anniversary of the great ruler of Mewar; a king who never got the Crown and the privilege to rule a state, but who remained king only on papers in his whole life; the Hindu ruler of Mewar, who is considered as the best example of bravery among the Rajput rulers of India and by whom all Mewar people are inspired.

Pratap singh, who is more famous as Maharana Pratap was the eldest son of Maharana Udai Singh, founder of Udaipur, and Maharani Jayawanti. Born on Jyestha Sudi third of Vikram Samvant 1597, he did his education and mastered in the skills of using arms and weapons at a very young age. He also learned horse riding during the time. He was married to Rajkumari Ajabade at the age of 17.

It was the year 1567 when Akbar, the great Mughal emperor, conquered  Chittorgarh, which was the capital of Maharana Udai Singh that time. Udai Singh’s followers and Generals of the kingdom advised him to abandon Chittorgarh. Udai Singh then moved to the valley of Aravali ranges and laid the foundation of the present Udaipur city. He wanted to give the crown of the kingdom to his beloved son Jagmal Singh, but his seniors and advisers wanted Pratap to be the king as per the customs.  And this was the beginning of competition, struggle and hardship for Maharana Pratap.

Maharana pratap never accepted Mughals as the rulers of his own country India, and for this very reason, he never bowed in front of Akbar and fought with him till his last breath. Meanwhile almost all of the other Rajput chiefs had surrendered to Akbar including Maharana’s own brothers. Akbar sent many proposals to Pratap, seeking some sort of peaceful adjustment that he had concluded with the other kings, but Pratap refused every proposal of Mughals to maintain his self esteem and honor. Maharana continued his struggle from the Aravali valleys from where he harassed the large force of Mughals and ensured that they were kept out of the valley during this crucial time.

Haldigahti Battle is a historical event in the Indian history, and in the annuals of Rajput and Mughal kingdoms. It was this battle in which Chetak, the beloved horse of Maharana Pratap essayed many brave moves but finally collapsed due to some critical injuries. In this battle, Pratap was also supported by the bhil tribes of the surrounding areas; the great contribution the bhil tribe in this battle is remembered till date and they are given an honor of contribution by the rajputs of mewar regimen. There was a significant impression of this war on the Mughal army. This battle is considered to be the first milestone of victory over the Mughal Emperors.

Pratap died at the age of 57, in the year 1597, because of multiple injuries in an accident during hunting. In his complete journey, the main goal of his life was not to surrender in front of the Mughals and even while lying in the lap of death he made his son and successors swear to maintain eternal conflicts against the Mughals.

Maharana Pratap is the best projected model of bravery, freedom fighter and patriotism against the Mughal rulers in India. It is because of this great fighter, that Mewar got the appreciation and honor to be the only kingdom to merge its state with the independent India. Sardar vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Union Home Minister said that “If any ruler in India had any right to claim of independence it was Mewar, which gladly and readily merged with the Indian Union saying that it was fulfillment of 13 centuries of their mission but for Mewar no other ruler has that right.”

This is a great honor for all of us to be the son of the land to which the great Maharana Pratap belongs. He lived his whole life with great courage and self respect, never bowing down in front of any difficult situation. We being the resident of Rana ji’s Udaipur should follow the same footsteps and live our lives with the same bravery and self esteem. Jai Mewar!!

The divine power on Earth: Mother

Motherhood – the most beautiful and special bridge of feelings created by God between a mother and child which wraps three words love, care and affection. Being a mother is the most wonderful, terrific and magnificent gift that life has offered to a women; it is a feeling of being complete and fulfilled.

A new definition adds to a women’s life when she feels a new life inside her. It is the journey of a woman which begins from the implantation of zygote in the endometrium but never ends; it runs for lifetime. Stretching from the nine sacrificing months knitted in beautiful dreams for her child, it passes through those golden years when she sees her child growing, the day he crawled, when he spoke first word, when he uttered ‘maa’, when he started walking and many such milestones that give her immense happiness. Between these happiness, she also experiences a tough time; changing nappies, looking after every small need of her child, keeping awake whole night when the child falls ill. But without complaining even once, she wakes up early in the morning to pack our lunch boxes, transforms into our coach in the evening for our outdoor games, and as a teacher to help us in our home works; her day ending with the glass of milk with our favorite flavor. We can always go to her with any of our problems at any time, without any hesitation. She will always be understanding and helpful.

She moulds the child and makes the best of him; she makes him a person that can face the challenges of world and excel in every task of life. She is our first teacher; she guides us in all paths of life, teaches us the social living, designs our lives and creates the personalities that we have. She serves as our protective covering from the outer evil and harming world; she holds our hands and gives us the warmth of security and happiness. Her contribution to our lives can’t be measured in any unit.

But we always take her work, her care and affection for granted. Yes, it is our pleasure that we are having mothers in our lives, but we should also never miss a single chance in paying our humble tribute to the ladies. Mother’s day is the right time to apologize for all the troubles that we have given her, and to celebrate her motherhood in the most special way. It is the day to let your mother know how much you appreciate everything she has done for you; the day of honoring motherhood; the day to praise the role of mother’s in the better development of society.

It is not the cards or the expensive gifts, or it is not about the lunch or dinner treat in a restaurant which we give her on the occasion, it is the silent promise to her through our eyes that we will never hurt her or will never do anything which is against the morals and ethics she taught in her lessons of life. We will always make her proud by our workings.

Let’s do this promise to her this year and give her our warm wishes for a healthy long life.

Happy Mother's Day

Thank you MUMMY, for being whatever you are!!!

Child labour: A major problem of today’s world

child labour

Every city has its own good and bad things, we can’t ignore any of them, but being a resident of the city, our duty is to eliminate the bad ones. In the similar manner, Udaipur, the city of lakes, god has flourished it with immense natural beauty, one of the example is the Fatehsagar lake, it is the most wanted place of Udaipur, everyone finds his/her own way to enjoy the breeze of the lake, say with a cup of coffee, popcorns, chats. But this is also a place where one can easily find the small kids involved in laborous activities.

Every corner of Udaipur is having the child labours, it may be the fatehsagar pal, surajpol , udaipol, Delhi gate or any area, we can see the small kids in the super hot summer or chilly cold or in the rain, they work hard to earn just a small amount of money.

Besides these, these kids are being used as domestic servants and workers at hotels and restaurants. A lot many are engaged in making plastic toys, leather shoes and hand bags.

Childhood – the most precious age in one’s life that never return back. Games, comics, chocolates, cycle, school and home make their whole world. Far away from responsibilities and the constant race for survival, children are the most innocent creation of god. But, these creations of God are being destroyed. These are being exploited by child labour.

Child labour is a major problem of today’s world. According to the Child labour (prohibition and regulation) act 1986, a child labour is the one who is made to work (paid or unpaid), within or outside the family or is deprived of the right of education and childhood, belonging to the age less than fourteen years.

It is a form of child exploitation. The causes behind it are the illiteracy and poverty of parents, large families with additional need of food and money cause the child labour. Due to this, the child face health problems, their proper development of body and mind may suffer. And above all, their childhood is also suffering.

In 2007, the Supreme Court issued notices to the Federal Government, states and union territories, seeking a complete ban on child labour, which included children working as domestic servants, at eateries, restaurants, hotels, tea-shops, or in recreational centers.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment notified the ban on August 1 and it came into effect on October 10. The new provision in the Act made it mandatory for the government to rescue children from streets, restaurants and homes and produce them before the Child Welfare Committee before they are sent to shelter homes.

But, merely passing the Law is not the solution to the problem. The problem lies in the implementation of these laws and country has a poor track record in this regard. It is now up to we people to consciously take a decision to stop this practice and motivate others also, else the mission to eliminate the child labour will be fail.

Lets take a pledge to abolish Child Labour and complain if you find it happening… !!

Buying Colors on Holi Happy Holi Udaipur
