Here is the List of Authors of the Decade which we have compiled for you on the Occasion of the World Book Day. 🙂
Nicholas Sparks:
Seen the movies: A Walk to Remember, The Notebook or The Last Song! The beautiful the movies, the more enchanting are the write-ups! This American novelist & screen-writer is amongst the most read writers throughout the globe.
Using the themes of cancer, love & death; a splendid magic of creating a sensual imagery lies in his pen. With 16 novels published under his name & 7 adapted to movies (after the first novel being rejected by the publishers); he remains the most romantic author of the time.
Cecelia Ahern:
The fairy-tale writer of the current time! J We rarely find words of her kind with any other author. This Irish author is well recognized with her work: P.S. I Love You! <3 : A sentimental yet funny story of the recovery of a woman who loses her husband young & how the letters left by him make her stand into an evenly furnished & happy person!
Paulo Coelho:
The Brazilian author of The Alchemist, Brida & Veronica Decides to Die apart from many other books; is also a mass-followed writer with a bright philosophical conscience. His books are translations yet have been sold in millions. The famous Hindi movie dialogue – “Agar Kisi Ko Dil-o-jaan se chaho to saari qaynat tumhe usse milane mein jut jati hai.”has been taken from his works.
Dan Brown:
Writer of the thrillers: The Da Vinci Code & Angels and Demons; the American novelist shows his superbly smart skills with his works. Both the above books (movies too) are treasure hunts set in a 24 hour time period. A man of superior intelligence, there’s rarely anything that can be stated with his stories without having a logic; still adventurous in every sense! He has the ability to promote even a spiritual discussion & debate with entertainment.
Aravind Adiga:
The last Booker Award came to India with the name of this Oxford pass-out Journalist & Writer through his work The White Tiger; though the book was a literal mockery of India Shining! But still the way of writing, sense of a serious humor & an intentional easy language that could reach out any of the commons; prove him a literally proficient person.
Chetan Bhagat:
The IIT-D, IIM-A graduate wrote his first novel at the time when an IIT seemed to listen a heaven! Though an average-languaged writer; but close to the general youngster lifestyle & easy readability, he stands the most popular author of current India! Practically, the one who taught the nation to read back but bluntly no comparisons with the leak of the rest names!
The Jaipur Literature Festival(JLF) – A grand event… with grander publicity & episode grandiosity! As the name depicted & as the description lamented, the event had captured for itself an already starred attention. But vaguely & sadly, the end of the event saw a criticism nationally as well as internationally in the literary world.
Though there may be an unending debate over the nature of the fest & how it was enacted. Somewhat (in petty senses) a successful event commercially but still just to acquaint our readers with the ultimate reasons of the literary & the journalistic criticism, we describe here some points :-
First of all, a Literature Festival organized in India without any writer of Indian language! Leave others, not even a single writer of Hindi language. French sessions can on a general basis be of no use or leisure to the common Indian folk!
Secondly, the fest basically lacked in the presence of “authentic” writers, particularly the current international fictional faces of Indian Literature. It was more of a celebrity pamper than a literary directorate. Most of the guests invited were those people who belonged to film industry, politics or other areas; and later had written a book or two by choice.
Chetan Bhagat is still a commercial attraction (an IIT-D, IIM-A graduate will always be!) No doubt, his height of success is not that easy to achieve but why to forget those 3 Bookers (Aravinda Adiga, Arundhati Roy, Kiran Desai) that came to India in the last 15 years; the quality of writing clearly demarcates the persisting difference between a writer & an engineer.
And the prominent one, the major attraction in fact 😉 the Salman Rushdie controversy! I must share it that Salman Rushdie has been awarded the “Booker of Bookers Award” for his book “The Midnight Children” twice. That is, he is till date considered the best awarded writer in the world. Any writer may have tentative thoughts but if a person of his status after achieving such a long & class experience has given written form to his ideas then those definitely deserve to be given a view. First an invitation, then asked not to come & at last a video conferencing under restrictions!
A literary issue was converted into a religious issue on the grounds of political benefits & losses. No comments over religious sentiments, but how many know that what has been written actually in his book!! How can you, when it is already banned! People’s justification lies only on what the leaders say. And the world knows how much they need to be trusted! Literature should be seen in literary terms, at least for the sake of this art. The problem is that we misdifferentiate some things, rest it is in itself a big beautiful world.
And lastly & very simply, 🙂 if it was to be an all-English show; as a part of the lavish Indian class of English-reading youngsters, we had expected our stars- Nicholas Sparks (A Walk to Remember, The Notebook, Nights in Rodanthe); Cecelia Ahern (P.S. I Love You) & Paulo Coelho (Brida, The Alchemist, etc.) to “preach” us but no such loved name! Even a single of these would have made the day of millions. But regrets of expecting them to be invited!
In all, a big name, but remained bereft of a worthy judgement ……
The long-awaited ecstatic wait of envisioning the charm of the age-old royal palace: The Rajmahal Bhindar finally came to satiety this New Year.
The celebration of its 434th New Year- The Royal Extravaganza 2012, brought inside the common public to witness this grand opening. The hotel was flowingly packed 3 days before the event. With a number of large enquiries heard even after that!
The Bhinder Raola(as denoted till now) was in its whole beauty & magnificence amidst the breezes of cool fresh air. Camp-fire in one area, DJ party in another (the Khush Mahal); along with a serenely lighted Bar. The celebration continued till around 3:20 a.m. in the morning with the lovely sounds & dancing beats of the rock band & DJ.
In all, a successful start of a well-awaited Heritage venture, a Restaurant (Bagichi) with a splendid taste (Truly, such quality is rarely found in Udaipur) and even after that, commercially still an upper mid-segment Hotel.

Drought & water-borne diseases in many parts of our state due to shortage & pollution of water should be tackled through disaster management policy. Special emphasis should be laid on fire control & earthquake resistance in multi-storey buildings and on the quality of roads, bridges & dams. Such were the thoughts that came up in the 5 day national workshop organized by NITTR, Chandigarh and CTAE, Udaipur.
The closing ceremony was held on Friday in the CTAE auditorium under the presidency of Dean Mr. N.S. Rathore, who kept his views over the utilization of renewable energy sources.
Dr. Changani, Dr. Suneja (RTU); Amit Goyal(NITTR); & Dr. Ravi Sharma(H.O.D. Civil Engg dept, CTAE ) also gave their opinions on proper civil designs & water treatments, highway networking & ecological disasters along with Dr. Swami & Dr, Chaudhary from MNIT and Mr. Anil Mehta (Vidhya Bhawan).
The programme was managed by Dr. Ravi Sharma & Trilok Gupta.
In the end, Jitendra Parihar of J.K. Lakshmi Cement told about the importance of cement quality in public as well as private constructions. Many engineers and faculty members of various engineering colleges took part in the workshop. In the end, students were informed about the reform programmes started by Seva Mandir in Delwara.
A chance to visit the 434 years old Imperial Palace, The Rajmahal Bhindar– awaiting its grand opening as a hotel this 31st; made it possible for us to bring to our readers some exclusive interior pics of the hotel. Though due to some final renovations, we could not bring you the whole photographic panorama (which we personally promise to bring you soon) we’re still sure to delight you with the clicks we got.
A perfect drive on a smooth, green surrounded way… And the candle light settings amidst the royal backdrop make it one of the finest upcoming hotels of Udaipur- A perfect romantic destination!
Don’t miss the chance to be a part of this splendid celebration, surely going to be a historical remembrance in a few years.
Permission of 51% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Retail Sector, already suffering value of Rupee in the international market, Price hike in petrol and necessary goods & post all, a day of no work in the whole nation – big things we understand! But does anyone even see what effects these are having on the literally non-existing poor classes! A government may allow any amount of foreign shares in the market (ever checked how many sectors we still have in public hands- just 3!) they never care! It’s a practical fact; our politics is prone to money power! The giant politicians, white elephants in themselves; are if shaken upside down; I bet- you will found 3-4 crores falling down at the moment, no big amount for them.
Government wants to achieve maximum economic growth, of private enterprises they say in their current 5-year plan! What about achieving the 4% agricultural growth rate (targeted since 20 years in every plan, yet not achieved!)– Complicacies of the system, we may still say (to keep our hearts, for sure). Public knows, what growth entrepreneurs have seen. 100 Cr firms are now 150 or 200 Cr but what about firms of minute capital. Money increases money- it’s no big deal when a cabinet of economists is helping that, that’ll happen automatically too. There capability is justified only when they help out the middlemen- the mango people!
We aren’t even that intelligent yet to discuss the fluctuations in rupee-dollar denominations, no need to mention that! So I won’t be discussing that (technically this ‘I’ also lies in the ‘We’).
Directly coming to the Bharat Band – 1 December 2011! Sensex down, a loss of 500 Crores- who cares, damn it! Has one ever thought how many daily-waged labourers must have slept hungry without this one day of work! And many others like them. We have a bigger fraction, crores in number- lying below and almost on the Poverty Line (earning less than even a $ per day). No comments on how much Rupees mean 1$! First a government dealing in (sometimes eating up too- the newspapers say; I’m not against anyone, really) 100s n 1000s of crores; never pays heed to Rs. 50 income earners- why should they, “Intensive Economic Growth” they want! And then our futile ways of opposing them! Lokpal hasn’t been passed yet, despite all measures- we stand helpless; because we are… the Commoners- the mango people!!! The Stupid Common Men!! (Courtesy- Nasiruddin Shah – A Wednesday)
Rather than no work, we could have worked 24*7 continuously, 4 days & the govt. would have surrendered (hopefully). It’s tough to administer without breaks for so long! Who’ll stand for 24 hours to handle the traffic; same goes with banks, colleges & other institutions. And the leaders have to act too that they are with us! How long can obese bodies stand! We are used to working; although nobody cares even if we faint! Force them to work, make it difficult for them, why being in loss ourselves. We as brothers yet understand, whatever we did was the urgent requirement. (May be next time)
The need of our country is a little restricted economy now; else we’ll be market slaves in some time. Nobody ever has a soap wash again when their hairs have smelt a multinational shampoo, a step ahead, conditioner too! And now have come – Hair Perfumes! Wow, what is it needed for! The money MNCs earn goes back to their homes, no company researches for technology in India, we are just a MARKET as I said, just a MARKET; what do we get then – a little employment that causes more disparities, habit of products that’ll make us disregard our own and now finally loss to our integral producers and sellers!
We don’t need such a growth, please!!! If the govt. can’t help us, they should not make our problems worse. We request with folded hands- Take back this decision, rest even the satisfied ones today will be sleeping hungry in a little time.
Sternly, it is of no good in common interests.
We feel immensely pleasured to introduce to you The Bhindar Rajmahal– the 434 years old Palace belonging to the ancestry of Maharana Shakti Singh; now renovated into a beautiful splendid hotel. The biggest attraction of the hotel is, being in its inaugural time; it’s somewhat more affordable to the commons as compared to the other heritage hotels of the city.
The hotel provides a perfect blend of chivalric culture and natural ecstasy in the country soil. Apart from the currently available 14 deluxe rooms and 6 suites, the palace also has an outhouse situated in a large lush green farm, bordered by a private seasonal lake. The mountains are just on their toes and the air is of utmost peace and beauty. You can always find 5 beautiful horses available for the liveliest experience of horse-riding amidst the terrain.
While specially “keeping in mind the people of Udaipur”, a Restaurant named “Baghichi” has also been developed in the complex; one can always have it in mind if he wishes to spend some time with close ones in the outer periphery, away from the pollution and noise. Having a smooth forty five minute drive is always a fair deal when you are getting a quality time in a place; I should use the word “palace”! totally alien to the city.
Sight-seeing is facilitated by open jeeps, an established symbol of the Rajput culture by now! Sitamata Wildlife Sanctuary (a habitat to the rare Flying Squirrels) is just 35 kms ahead; other surrounding places include Akola, Jaisamand Lake, Jagat temples, Haldi ghati, Chittorgarh, Ekling JI & Nathdwara Shrinathji temple.
While the proper service of the customers is personally taken care of by the Director herself; activities like trekking, jeep safari, horse-riding, yoga, tent camping, cooking classes of the local delicacies and musical nights for the traditional taste are also organized.
With a young management always ready to design a playful beauty of an exquisite contrast, you can also have DJ Parties arranged in the open spaces on a single call.
And the speciality; a wish for many- the Destination Wedding! Is the sole expertise of the place. One always dreams of having a marriage in the most royal forms, a one time affair in the whole lifetime; won’t it be best if done with such an imperial magnificence!
The Bhindar Rajmahal is just 59 kms from Udaipur; moving straight on the Chittor Highway & turning to the right from Keer Ki Chowki. Escorts can also be availed for the same.
If you wish to spend a day of luxury, or to enchant the beauty of nature; have a lovely time with your spouse or a memorable happening with family & friends- The Bhindar Rajmahal is the perfect place to be. 🙂
NOTE:- A New Year Party will be organized next month in the hotel; Passes for which can be booked from the following contact numbers:- +91-9461503339; +91-9783539255.
We promise you a royal treatment with a cherishing service. 🙂
This week I got a chance to talk to the very popular personality among students, flourishingly intelligent and also the very caring Professor from our city- our most respected Dr. Vijaya Lakshmi Chouhan- former Dean, Students Welfare Board, MLSU & the H.O.D. University Psychology Department.
As people practically know very little about the subject, the most qualified & experienced person from the field of Psychology in our city- an epitome of exemplary excellence in herself, was interviewed, to provide the readers with a better view towards the subject. We really thank her for sparing her time to have a discussion with Kalpit. This is how the conversation went-
Q. Psychology- many conceptions and misconceptions!!! In your words, what is it?
A.Psychology is the subject of natures & behaviors. It is more or less the spine of our behaviour! As the spinal cord balances our brain, keeps it in place; similarly it’s the psychology of a person that keeps its life on a balance. Psychology in itself holds a high place of importance in daily life as it is what makes a person capable of analyzing himself, his society and surroundings; mould an understanding & further have his personal development.
We behold many problems in our life and thoughtfully the root of all problems lies in our psyche! To solve them properly, a psychological understanding is needed.
Q. People rarely know the difference between Psychology & Psychiatry. While those who know; generally believe “Psychiatry” to be a higher level of knowledge; my question is that, are the people specializing through basic degrees in science & arts; as “Psychologists” really inferior to them?
A. A student with the qualification M.B.B.S. + P.G. in Psychiatry is a Psychiatrist while those with M.A. or M.Sc. in Psychology are called Psychologists.
It’s the people’s mentality that has decided it higher. In actual, Psychiatry is just a part of Psychology. On the other hand, Psychology is a wide subject, covering all the aspects.
Psychiatry is the treatment of abnormals with the use of medicines. The flow of our blood, the rate at which we breathe, and many such things depend on our thoughts! To understand & analyze the problem in a wider perspective, we always go with Psychology.
Q. Though a very interesting subject; people have a say that it has low returns in the form of income! What is your verdict on it?
A. It’s merely a misconception aroused out of lack of knowledge & fallacies. Firstly, we can’t limit Psychology to any boundary; it finds its application everywhere. Practically, every 5th person needs a Psychologist; it’s just that being in a poverty-stricken nation, people can’t afford it!
And although, most of the Psychologists are dedicated to their work without any greed, still if you’ve asked- The income in this profession counts in Lakhs. A proper treatment starts with a least fee of Rs. 500 & may reach even 5 lakhs, depending upon the need!
Q. If asked about career specialization, which branch of Psychology you would suggest!
A. No part of a body is more or less. Eyes are as important as ears, so is our tongue! We can never decide which one is the premium! All fields are good at their place; solely depends on the student’s aptitude & choice, which branch he/she is best suited for! If a person wants and finds himself apt to treat abnormal behaviours; he may take Clinical Psychology or Psychiatry; and if he is more comfortable with industries & management life, he may move to Industrial Psychology; and so with the other branches.
Q. Will you name some good colleges for higher studies in psychology?
A. Studying it metros like Delhi & Mumbai will help a lot due to the competition as well as availability of investments.
Q. You’re a Professor since a long time, what do you feel are the standards of Govt. Colleges & the facilities provided in the Psychology Laboratories?
A. It feels disappointing, that in Rajasthan, the subject is not taken properly. We still see here that people believe & say- “Psychology is a subject meant only to be studied by insanes!” In fact, it is the subject which is followed by the most thoughtful & the reasoned ones. A Psychologist needs many elements for his proper furnishing. Tolerance, Will Power & Dedication are in oneself, they don’t need someone’s finances for these; but to check some behaviours and the levels they have reached; specific machinery & equipments are required to get accurate results.
And these facilities aren’t provided. Hence the condition is not so good.
Q. Living in the Indian Society, we see many deaths & diseases occurring due to paranormal reasons; how do you visualize it? (Parapsychology- the branch that deals with the study of spirits)
A. Indian culture is very vast, has a lot of literature describing it! Many highly effective psychological treatments are given in the Vedas; we too use them. Scientifically, it’s the person’s mentality/psychology that goes misguided; this is what is treated then.
Q. Does Telepathy really exist?
A. As a Behavioural Scientist, I’ll say; it depends on what you individually feel. Give a thought, If I’m thinking about someone or something and that happens to be by chance; then it’s totally my personal feeling and belief that telepathy is occurring with me.
Q. India as a nation holds a lot of diversity. What do you think may bring together all in a flow?
A. It’s a positive thing that our society has a lot of variety. I see it as a better part. It’s also the reason why we have comparatively less mental & depression patients than the western countries. There they have a similar lifestyle, which with time brings monotony and thus professional treatment needs! While our cultural combination- colored with festivals, fairs and relations; brings a feeling of happiness & change from time to time, relaxes us to the best.
Q. In the end Ma’m, any message to the students through UdaipurBlog?
A. Yes definitely.
Disregarding as students, you are in which field; I advise you all to study Psychology. Even if you don’t take it as a career; it is a great help in administering yourself, to analyze and understand life in a better way.
It shall definitely leave you with a better perspective towards life.
