Rajasthan’s smallest premature – 520 gms baby – survives despite all odds

jivanta hospital 520 gms

Born at barely 24 weeks, 520 gm baby beat odds to survive

Baby Maya’s tale of survival is an extraordinary one. The micro-preemie, born prematurely at just 24 weeks of gestation [Five and half months] and weighing only 520 grams, fought for three-and-half months to survive a stormy course in the neonatal ICU of Jivanta Children’s Hospital, Udaipur- Smallest ever survived in Rajasthan.

Born to couple Maya and Dev Singh [name changed] from Narnaul, Haryana married for 18 years, she started premature labor pains and leakage of amniotic fluid at 24 weeks of her pregnancy.  The ultrasonography revealed nearly absent amniotic fluid. The couple rushed to Udaipur and as the survival of a baby was getting compromised was taken up for emergency cesarean section. Twin babies were born weighing just 520 grams and 480gms at birth on 29th May. These babies were very precious and the only hope for the family. The baby required artificial breathing support to regularize his breathing and then quickly transferred to Jivanta neonatal ICU. However 480-gram baby detected to have major brain hemorrhage shortly after birth, treatment was discontinued on parents consent.

“To salvage baby of this size is a mammoth task and big challenge. At the best of centers, only 30% of such babies born this early survive. Most doctors do not even attempt to save such babies, as the possibility of healthy survival is low.” said Dr. S K Tak.

“There is no documented record of survival of the baby born so early and weighing this low in Rajasthan. Last reported smallest baby survived in Rajasthan was Baby Geeta (607 gm and born at 27 weeks) @ Jivanta children’s Hospital,” said Dr. R K Agrawal.

Dr. Pradeep Suryawanshi added, “Baby born this small have the extremely poor function of all body organs including lungs, heart, brain, kidney, skin, intestines & all of them need support for the survival of baby. This is where skilled & dedicated Neonatologist & Nursing staff is required, as the margin of error is close to zero. Problems related to any single system can singularly kill the baby & only 5-10% survives without brain damage.”

The baby was managed & looked after at Jivanta Neonatal ICU under the precise care of Neonatologist Dr. Sunil Janged, Dr. Nikhilesh Nain & trained nursing staff. At beginning baby was struggling to breathe, so was put on a ventilator & given surfactant to expand tiny immature lungs. The baby was having an infection in blood; his hemoglobin level was very low at birth which required blood transfusions. His heart functions and pumping was poor. The baby also had a large connection between two major vessels [patent ductus arteriosus], which was closed with medicines. His gut was immature & he could not be fed, so the baby was put on TPN which means giving all essential nutrients such as protein, carbohydrate by blood. To get venous access umbilical lines were put. Such babies lose water very quickly through their parchment like skin & their weight drops down further. These are some of many problems one faces while managing such babies. Regular screening of heart & brain were performed to rule out any bleeding in the brain.  Due to brain immaturity baby used to forget to breathe, we call it as apnea of prematurity. Baby required ventilator support for 70 days.

In all he was in NICU for 102 days, today he is being discharged, on discharge, his weight is 1.710 Kg. By far his progress in NICU is satisfactory, Brain is structurally normal, eyes are developing normally.

“It was a long & tough journey for me & my team; it is the latest technology, the high-end expertise of our NICU team, which has pulled this off. In last 2 years Jivanta has successfully treated more than 75 extreme premature babies weighing less than 1000 grams and having more than 90% survival of extremely low birth babies” said Dr. Sunil Janged, Chief Neonatologist at Jivanta Children Hospital.

दादू की याद में ‘Rangaanjali’

dadu

US$6000 (Rs.4 lacs) Prize for Udaipur Students Project by Intel Corporation, USA

It was the time for students of Udaipur based engineering college Techno India NJR Institute of Technology to make a splash on international technology scene. World’s biggest chip maker Intel Corporation of USA organised a Hackathon with a challenge to   build innovative devices to improve human life. Thousands of entries were received for this challenge from all over the world.

3 students of Techno NJR  Electronics and Communication branch  took this challenge and decided to create a device to improve quality of water in Udaipur lakes and wells. First step to improve is to measure  water quality . Traditional way to measure quality of water is to take sample of water from the lake and do the testing  in a laboratory  where you get results next day. And it  was not done regularly. Also data on quality of water remained with authorities and laboratories only.

techno india njr students

These students decided to create an Internet of Things (IoT)  device which could measure water quality continuously without taking water sample and also  share results  with everyone through an App so that so that every Udaipurite can contribute in improving quality of lake Water.

So this is what they did

They created a box and installed 4 sensors to measure following four parameters of Water quality “

  1. Temperature
  2. PH
  3. Turbidity
  4. Dissolved oxygen

They also installed a data logger to collect all readings of these sensors and also added a solar panel to supply power to the box. They connected  this system to IBM Bluemix cloud to store the data on quality of water sent  every half an hour  by the sensors. They also used IBM Watson to analyse this continuous data to create reports and graphs and created an App  called Lake Monitoring System ( available on Google Play Store ) through which anyone in the world can see quality of water in Udaipur lakes on live basis.

This will help in authorities and Udaipur lake lovers in improving the quality of water by taking suitable measures. If Ph is increasing it will imply that some water from sewage is coming in lakes. Dissolved oxygen level indicates suitability of this water for fishes and fauna in the lake. If dissolved oxygen level is low it can be improved by installing aerators.

For this highly valuable project  students Ritwik Dave, Roshni Mehta and Himmat Khatik won second prize of US$ 5000 and Best Student project of US$ 1000 in Intel Hacks 2017 for their entry – Smart Well Monitoring System . This system has been installed by the students at Fatehsagar lake in Udaipur .

As a highly gracious and commendable gesture, students have offered to use Prize money of Rs.4 lacs to make 6 more systems like these and install them in other six lakes of Udaipur so that Government authorities and general public can see water quality of all 7 lakes through one App on their mobile. Computer Science students Ritwik Joshi and Vansh Soni designed the dashboard and the App based on IBM Bluemix and IBM Watson platform. You can see the system at:

Project was mentored by  Prof. Pradeep C. & Dr. Jonathan Joshi  on IoT side and Aaditya Maheshwari on Cloud and Analytics .

UdaipurBlog congratulates these students for this useful device which will help Udaipur keep it’s lakes pristine and clean.

Fairpencil – An initiative in the field of Architecture

According to Henri Matisse, “Creativity takes courage.” And, when it comes to leading with artistic skills people from Udaipur are never limited to a backend.

Graduate from Dr. DY Patil College of Architecture, Pune, Yatish Jain is born and brought up in Udaipur. But his enthusiasm and background of dealing with buildings encouraged him to develop something in response to growing architectural needs and problems faced by many in designing.

This was the core that made him began his journey from Arihant Property Dealers to FairPencil. And, while knowing about his online vision to help future and existing architects, we also learned many things in thoughtful conversations.

What is FairPencil and how it is helpful to people?

“It is an initiative created with an aim to give all type of ideas and details about the designing of a house and other spaces. Initially, if you will take a look at FairPencil, we intend to add guidelines, blogs, and even more for the people who are related to designing of space and construction. Or, the ones who are thinking to construct and design their house in an entirely new way.

In the base of FairPencil, we are starting with the FairPencil calculator, design blog, and Vastu Blog to let people confront with all the details of new construction and renovations.

In an aspect of change, FairPencil includes an idea of connecting all people related to the field of architecture and design. At our platform, they can contribute with their time and knowledge to increase the reach of their ideas into the community of their similar interests.”

What are FairPencil Calculator, Design Blog, and Vastu Blog defining exactly on your platform?

“The concept of FairPencil is entirely dedicated to the genre related to design & architecture. Students who are new to the field of construction, studying in architecture school or college and willing to create spaces creatively can take help from our blog. That’s why all the sections are specified accordingly for their convenience like

Fair Pencil Calculator is a free plot area measurement architectural calculator that works as a tool to figure out and fix requirements of the project in given area. With its help, it is simple to measure the inbuilt areas like the garden, parking, and the building spaces as a number or rooms and their sizes.

It’s self-explanatory to use, and at the end, it gives the outcome of all the values entered in this calculator.

Whereas, when you look into Design and Vastu blog section, both reflect ideas of designing any home with general needs, which are required for the outline of most types of buildings by utilising defined Vastu. As when you see the importance of Vastu is evident in construction for increasing positive energy, sacredness, and grandness of the structure.”

Fair Pencil by Yatish Jain

Is there any special trait that makes FairPencil different from other blogs with the same concept?

“Yeah! FairPencil is one of its kind till now in Udaipur. As, most of all when it comes to architecture, students who are interested in studying designing & construction and the existing architects, who are looking for new ideas to construct spaces probably don’t find enough help online. And, other well-known architects & interior designers have blogs but on their sites, which are also hard to peek into again & again.

So, this is also a place where architectures can share their knowledge and let people reach them through a single scale.”

So, any plans FairPencil is looking to set-up further?

“Right now, on a starting base, we are enhancing our sections i.e. FairPencil Calculator, Design, and Vastu Blog. But, soon, we will be expanding to many different tools and also launch of our application through which people can get a base directly on mobile.”
Well! Yatish, we wish you good luck for your blog with a unique perspective. This is now in turn quite of a lead for architects, interior designers, and for the one who is introduced newly to architecture to reach the maximum number of people through a single platform.

To know more about FairPencil, you can visit website: http://www.fairpencil.com/
