AHAR – The Heritage on the verge of extinction

The Ahar river which encircles the Udaipur city is one of the few ancient rivers of the early ages, and is still hiding great mysteries within itself.

The significance of this river goes way back to the time of Indus Valley Civilisation, when there was also a contemporary civilisation going alongside, that is Ahar Civilisation, which was nurtured by this Ahar river only as those people resided on the banks of this river, the river which is now a mere sewage & dumpyard for the whole city.

If we turn a few more pages in history we find some lesser known facts about Ahar civilisation that existed even in the pre & early Vedic period and flourished in the Chalcolithic age (copper age) which is surprisingly dated around 3500-1500BC

Although it is the lack of archaeological excavations and people’s attention that there is still a huge potential for new discoveries about Ahar. Archaeological survey of india (ASI) has designated a museum for the Ahar civilisation, it is situated near Gangu kund (Cenotaphs).

Similar to Harappa and Mohenjodaro, Ahar civilisation was well versed in pottery (painted red & grey ware), Stone statues & tools, terracotta figurines, clay toys etc. All these artifacts found in the excavations are exhibited in the Ahar Museum. The metal statue of Buddha and stone statues of Jain tirthankaras are the unique attraction of this place for the scholars & historians. This museum is lesser known & is among the least visited places even for the Udaipurites, due to the lack of information regarding the Ahar & its heritage values.

Don’t let the Ahar die beneath the urban garbage, save it from becoming an open sewerage and let it again sing the tales of our glorious past. Our history requires our attention!

Few ways you can deal with post lockdown anxiety, depression and negativity

The one who said, “covid cases are just numbers until they become a name you know”, has well said and very much appropriate. We’ve just seen a very dark time, like never seen before and it has disturbed all of us to our very core.

This might be my personal opinion, but having to think everyone will relate to the anxiety at this point, to the negativity we were surrounded with, especially when we are in our ‘work from home and not to socialise’ modes.

Couldn’t help, but think of things that can reduce the developing anxiety and depression due to the curfews, the lockdown and the pandemic. It is necessary and It’s not even easy but here are a few things we can do to keep ourselves calm and positive. We can always try!

Give yourself a routine

Now, this is the time to be self-obsessed. Set short goals for each day or a week. Engage yourself in self-care. Do not sleep too much or too little, exercise more, meditate, set reminders to drink water, and eat adequately. Neither skipping a meal will help nor overeating. Eating healthy food also boosts your mood, so switch to a healthy routine. A proper schedule definitely helps in reducing stress and keeps you mentally busy; so no space for overthinking. A healthy lifestyle is the key to a healthy mind.

Turn on your ‘fun’ channel

If things are getting to you, hold strong and find a reason to smile every day. Watch more stand up comedy shows, funny videos, comedy films; give yourself a reason to laugh. That is an instant freshener. Play with the kids, play with pets, spend more time with nature, in fact, do something to preserve it; it’ll make you happy from deep inside. And most of all change to some upbeat, happy music. A change in the playlist brings an instant change in the mood and you can even jump and dance around. Do not think much, have fun, you’ll see your surroundings in a fresh mood.

Stop over-consuming the news

We are surrounded by all kinds of Covid related news, which is ultimately affecting our mental peace in one or another way. We need to just stay informative, so take all the information needed and then stop the extra news to get to you. For starters, we all scroll down the Instagram search feed. Try and change it into things that make you feel good, like surfing for sports, food, Bollywood, music etc. anything that distracts you from unwanted information.

No blame game

Blaming someone else always results in more and more negativity. Instead of blaming the world, people in higher authoritative positions, making a person feel that he/she is responsible for it, we should see the positives. Do your bit to make this place better for living. Stay affirmative that the good is going to come.

Express yourself

It is the most important exercise to reduce stress, anxiety, depression and other mental issues that you express, tell your feelings. We have to stay in our homes to be safe, less socialising, less personal touch and that leads to frustration. Surround yourself with people you can talk to; friends, family, anyone. Indulge in long talks instead of chatting.

Like I am sharing my opinion and feelings with you all in this format, you can also choose your mode of expression. It can be through painting, writing, speaking, working, anything that takes that burden out, setting within you.

These all measures have been personally practised, so stay at home and do give it a try. And do not let the darks fill the void with all the wrongs that are coming to you, fill the emptiness with your beautiful heart and the creative brain god has gifted to us humans.

The process of unlocking has begun. Sooner or later we will be heading out according to the guidelines and protocols. We just need to be patient and take care of ourselves and our families.

We can always start afresh. Nothing is easy but slowly and steadily we are the ones who stand firm on the virtue of perfection. We are all in this together. You’re always welcome to share your feelings with us. You need to just push that ‘go’ button.

Note: All these measures are the writer’s opinion. Every person is different; we do not claim for these measures to work on each and every one. But if you feel you need help, do not hesitate to contact a professional.

Udaipur teenager becomes the Youngest Plasma Donor in India

18-year-old Manshul Rathodiya of Udaipur becomes the youngest plasma donor of India. The teenager donated plasma at the age of 18 years and 5 days on 3rd May 2021.

The convalescent plasma therapy aims at using antibodies from the blood of recovered Covid-19 patients to treat those who are critically affected by the virus. The therapy can also be used to immunize those who are at a high risk of contracting the virus, such as health workers, families of patients, and other high-risk contacts.

This is definitely a proud moment for all Udaipurites that the youngest plasma donor in India belongs to Udaipur. Team UdaipurBlog had a quick conversation with Manshul Rathodiya and here is what he has to say on this noble deed of his, which set a new record:

You’ve become India’s youngest person to donate plasma, how are you feeling?

Manshul: “I felt very nice, it’s an amazing feeling. And what better than saving someone’s life.”

When you made up your mind regarding donating plasma, what was going on inside you and how did you come up with this decision?

Manshul: “When I used to see on social media that this blood group plasma is required, that plasma is required, so I spoke to myself, if I could do anything, I will do it. So that is how I came up with my decision and I finally did it.”

How did your family react when you informed them of your decision?

Manshul: “My family was totally supportive. They supported me and my decision, that yes, you can donate plasma, rather you should, and we are with you.”

While donating plasma, how were you feeling? How was the experience?

Manshul: “I was feeling very proud at that time and by donating plasma once, I can save the lives of two people. It was a great experience and I was really happy.”

Tell us about your inspiration. How did you get inspired for such a great cause?

Manshul: I saw pictures of people donating plasma on UdaipurBlog. So, I got inspired from there that I should also donate plasma. It was already twenty to twenty-five days since I recovered from covid. So after searching about how to donate, finally, I did it.”

What message would you like to give to our Udaipurblog readers?

Manshul: “I would just like to say one thing that if anyone is capable of donating plasma then they should donate. What better deed you can do than saving someone’s life.”

An extraordinary heart and selfless thought process is required for such noble acts and in times when people are afraid and reluctant towards plasma donation, this young boy from Udaipur has set an example, a benchmark that for doing something great, greatness is required.

Shed your fear away; and if you have recently recovered from the Covid-19 virus and if you are eligible to donate plasma then don’t give it a second thought. It’s a noble job, put your foot forward and it starts from you.

Why Covid appropriate behaviour is so important?

What we are facing right now is a national emergency. Covid is real and right here. And no, it’s not just a fever!! It is extremely important to understand the gravity of the situation because the only way to break the chain of transmission as of now is by staying indoors.

Doctors have been repeatedly emphasising on the practice of covid appropriate behaviour. You have been told things that all of you know by now- “Do not step outside unless absolutely necessary. If at all you need to go out, please wear double masks at all times, fully covering your nose and mouth. Sanitize and wash your hands regularly and do not touch your eyes or nose with your hands.”
Let me tell you why it is important-
The Sars-Cov-2 virus is doing exactly what it is supposed to i.e. evolution based on Darwinian law of survival. Covid appropriate behaviour (like physical distancing, use of masks, washing hands) and neutralising antibodies to the viral spike protein derived from natural infection are antiviral in a way because they prevent the spread of disease. But when this antiviral response is ‘suboptimal’ (lack of covid appropriate behaviour) the virus becomes resistant to our natural immune response and produces mutations. And as the virus keeps on mutating, we might another wave of this.
So the key is to firstly break the chain of transmission by staying indoors and following covid appropriate behaviour. And secondly, controlling the spread by establishing vaccine-induced herd immunity.
Now that the vaccination is open for all, please get yourself vaccinated. Do not believe in all those myths related to the vaccine. Vaccines induce a polyclonal immune response triggering higher neutralising antibodies than the natural infection thus strengthening our antiviral response and suppressing emerging variants.
Please understand that the healthcare system is already overburdened and if people keep on getting infected, it will eventually collapse. In many places, we are already on shortage of resources, but if do your part by staying at home, masking up when out and getting vaccinated we can fight this together.

Pujari Ashok Ji [Jagdish Temple]

(Names have not been changed in this summary)

Ashok ji is one of the many pujaris of Udaipur’s famous Jagdish mandir. Built by Maharana Jagat Singhji I, the construction of Jagdish mandir began in 1622 and was completed in 1652. The Maharana selected a pujari to do puja archana in the mandir, and this responsibility has been passed on from one generation of the pujari’s family to another. Today, four families, all descendants of the pujari first chosen by Maharana Jagat Singhji I, conduct puja archana in the mandir.

Following a system put in place by their ancestors, the four families take turns to do puja for one month at a time. The cycle continues throughout the year and as their ancestors arranged it, the mandir’s major festivals are distributed equally across each family’s turns in the cycle, meaning that responsibilities and opportunities to collect daana are divided equally.

In normal circumstances, considering that Jagdish mandir is the largest Vishnu mandir in North India and also a major tourist attraction, awaa gaman toh bahut hi rehta hai na, bheed toh rehti hai. Din mein 1000-1500 log toh aate hein. Hare Rama, Hare Krishna (ISKCON) people also come to the mandir and do puja according to their paddhati. They bring a lamba dholak, dance, and sing bhajans.

Holi has recently gone by. The last holi celebration in Jagdish mandir, rang pancham, happened before the lockdown and was celebrated as per custom. The tradition is to go to Eklingji on the following teras. Bhajan mandalis, many bhakts, they all go to Eklingji. Arrangements are made there for food and so on and people visit in large numbers. With rang teras in Eklingji holi ke parv samapt ho jaate hein. But this year, by teras the lockdown had already began.

Rath yatra and nirjala ekadashi are coming, they are Jagdish mandir’s biggest festivals. The rath yatra taken out from Jagdish mandir is second only to the one in Puri. This year it will fall on 23rd June. 15 days before that is nirjala ekadashi, during which people fast for 24 hours without drinking even a sip of water. It is a festival of daan punya. The administration puts up tents in Jagdish chowk, where the mandir’s steps begin, and coolers are installed for the public. People begin lining up for darshan from 5 in the morning. There is police presence for crowd control. Darshan continues until midnight. This year it is uncertain if these festivals will be celebrated. Ashok ji expects they will be cancelled.

Jagdish Manav Seva Samiti, which is associated with the mandir, runs an anna kshetra or community kitchen in an adjoining premises. They collect money through donations and serve food to about 500-1000 needy people everyday. The kitchen is functioning during the lockdown. Kitchen staff is maintaining distance and taking precautions to keep themselves and others safe. Lockdown ke hisaab se public wahaan pe nahi jeem rahi hai abhi. Jagdish chowk ke jitne bhi mitra mandal hein na, mewar sena, yuva morcha and so on, who also organise garba programmes in Jagdish chowk during navratri, together they are identifying the zarooratmund and distributing food packets mohalla wise. These groups have taken the necessary persmissions. Unke pass bane hue hein police prashasan se, muh pe mask bandh kar ke nikal rahe hein. Except for them no one is really allowed to move around. In the mandir, pujaris, safai karamcharis, everyone is following the guidelines of the government, to keep washing hands and cover their mouth with a mask or rumaal. Ashok ji also wears a rumaal when he goes to the mandir, he wears it while doing puja as well. Recently, media outlets like Mewar channel, India TV, and Aaj tak had come to the mandir to cover how it is operating during the lockdown.

An arial view of Jagdish mandir and Jagdish chowk. PC: Ashok ji

Usually about 10-15 sadhu sanyaasis are always sitting on the steps of the mandir. Some of them live here and there closeby and come to the madir early in the morning. Whatever they get as daan-punya, ussi mein unka gujar-basar karte hein woh. At night, several sleep around the mandir itself. But at the moment there are only 2-4 sadhu sanyasis at the madir steps. The rest have gone idhar udhar, apne gaaon ki taraf. In normal circumstances 100-300 sadhu sanyaasis would eat at the anna kshetra next to the mandir everyday.

Before the lockdown several people came to the temple regularly. They would come for darshan, for bhajan sandhyas, to sit together, and so on. Now they feel ki ye din kaise aa gaye hein ki bhagwaan se bhi duri ho gayi apni. Unko bhi bahut akelapan mehsus ho raha hai. Ashok ji and other pujaris try to give them bhagwaan ke darshan by sharing photos on WhatsApp.

There is a lot of police presence in Jagdish chowk. Police vehicles come often to the area and make announcements about remaining at home and not gathering in groups. Roads and public places are sanitized regularly. About 2 weeks ago, a few cases of Covid-19 were detected in Malla Talai, which is beyond Jagdish chowk and towards Chand Pol. The entire area was sealed off and movement in and out was completely stopped. They began to slowly relax the curfew there only about 2-3 days ago. In Ashok ji’s area doctors and nurses have come door to door asking if anyone has symptoms like cough or fever, or if anyone in the house has recently come from Bhilwara district, Maharashtra, or MP. These medical teams were wearing gloves and masks, and those who had symptoms were asked to accompany them for testing. As such there isn’t much tension in Udaipur since number of cases isn’t that high.

Road art at the chowk urging people to stay home, stay safe
PC: Ashok ji

Udaipur has one of the largest public hospitals in Rajasthan, the Maharana Bhupal Govt. Hospital. It is well-known across Rajasthan and in other states as well. Yahaan toh bahut achhi suvidhayein hein, doctors bhi achhe hein. In the hospital they have created a separate ward for corona patients, like they had created for swine flu. All corona patients are properly isolated.

Even so, dar toh lagta hi hai, dar kyun nahi lagega. This disease is spreading all over the world, there is a problem all over the world. Confined in his home, Ashokji prays that no one should get this disease. Vasudhaiva kutumbakam, ek parivaar ki tarah, sabko bimaari se mukt rakhhe, bhagwaan sabka bhala kare.

Before the lockdown, Ashok ji would wake up early in the morning, go to the mandir, seva puja karke he would get ready to go to the office where he works. He would prepare tiffin, get the children ready, wahi routine ka kaam rehta tha. Now ghar mein sab kaid ho gaye. But thoda bahut they are able to go out of the house to the mandir.

With the lockdown underway, both gates of the mandir are closed. In its 450-year-old history, it has never been closed to the public in this way. Humare buzurg log bhi bolte hein ki humne bhi kati aisa nahi suna ke mandir ke patdwaar band hue hon. Even when some similar circumstances have arisen in the past, darshan ke liye mandir ka band hona, aisa kabhi nahi hua hai. This is the first time it is happening. Humein bhi bahut atpata lag raha hai. Soona pan bhi hai. Mandir bhi band, sabse duri banake rakhna, bahar bhi nahi nikal sakte zyaada, kisi se baat nahi kar sakte. Lekin kya karo, jitna sarkar ka nirdesh hai, saara manna toh padega hi.

The pujari parishad of Jagdish mandir, in which each pujari has a place, looks after the maintenance and running of the mandir. It organises all festivities that take place within the mandir parisar, like holi, janmashtami, saavan jhula, the first part of rath yatra, in which a small rath is taken out within the mandir premises itself, and so on. The government and bhakts across the city put together the grand festivities that take place outside the mandir, such as preparations in the chowk for nirjala ekadashi and the second part of rath yatra, during which an elaborate rath accompanied by several jhankis progresses into the city with much fanfare.

Rath yatra 2018: 52 Jhankis, ceremonial firing, and a helicopter to shower the teeming chowk with rose petals. As people gather to celebrate and witness the yatra, several women occupy one of the best vantage points in the chowk – two sides of the mandir steps. Caption and photograph: Garima Raghuvanshy

Pujaris have no fixed monthly income. They collect whatever is placed in the pooja thaali by darshanaarthis. The closure of Jagdish mandir to the public has impacted Ashok ji’s family significantly. Humara toh parivaar isi pe tika hua hai. Everyone in the family is involved in puja at the mandir, and they are wholly dependent on it for their income. The income from other employments is very low. But bhagwaan ki krupa hai that they are quite alright and are not facing any dire straits.

People cannot come inside, but within the mandir complex, the work of the pujaris continues. Bhagwaan ki puja archana woh toh vidhivats chal hi rahi hai. Every day at 5:30 am the mandir opens, bhagwaan ka snaan karke 9:30 ko shrungaar aarti hoti hai. Bhagwaan ko ek ghante ka bhog lagta hai aur 11:30 ko bhog aarti hoti hai. The mandir is closed between 2:30 and 4 in the afternoon. Saayankal 7 baje sandhya aarti hoti hai, last mein, 9:45 shayan aarti hoti hai. Then the mandir is closed again. Prasad ban raha hai, bhog bhi lag raha hai, sab kuch chal raha hai. The prasad is made in lesser quantities now, enough only for the guards and safai karamcharis.

Jo parampara hai woh toh chal hi rahi hai. The only difference is, there are no darshanaarthis.

55 Countries and Counting – The Story of a Backpacker from Udaipur

Venturing out into the unknown all by yourself is something that holds an apex position on the bucket list of many. After all, who doesn’t want to leave behind their everyday regime of hullabaloo and ruckus? But certain things are easier said than done! If there are the perks of being a gallivanter, there is a slew of challenges attached to it, with pecuniary affairs sitting on the top.

But every cloud has a silver lining! And Vaibhav Jain from our very own City of Lakes – Udaipur – seemed to have found that periphery.

A backpacker, Vaibhav Jain is on a travel spree from last 4.5 years. And guess what! In this span, he has covered a whopping 55 countries all with his backpack, yearning to explore new places, and desire to meet new people. His passion for traveling didn’t kick 4.5 years back. In fact, he was bitten by the wander bug in his pre-teen years. Since his early days, Vaibhav used to mark places in the map and read about them. Soon he was engulfed by the urge to visit these countries and marvel at their beauty and explore their culture.

When his friends were attending lectures during college time, Vaibhav was somewhere exploring the less visited hill stations in Himachal Pradesh. He was rejoicing the bustling metros of Mumbai and secluded beaches in Goa when his academic allies were battling with different disciplines.

Well, before you brand Vaibhav with the tag of ‘an oofy guy’, let’s bring in the limelight his personal life and figure out how he manages his globetrotting.

Vaibhav is a fruit of a middle-class family tree. After pursuing his MBA, he stepped in the corporate world, with travel thoughts always hovering his head. However, owing to his travel ardor, he decided to bid adieu to his 9 to 5 routine once and for all. It was after two years and four different jobs in four different industries, Vaibhav was now all set to take the leap of faith. Undoubtedly, his family’s support in this endeavor further encouraged him and boosted his morale to step out of the norms laid down by the society. With all his courage collected, he made his first international trip, which also turned out to be his gateway to his ‘world exploration’ mission.

As a backpacker, he endeavors to travel more at an expense that doesn’t burn a hole in his pocket. He leverages local transport which keeps things under check. Commuting in local transportation facilities also helps him in knowing the life, people, and culture of that place. Being a vegetarian, he further manages to cut down his trip expenses. With a backpack containing fewer attires and accessories, he ensures that he has a quick and seamless movement from country to country and continent to continent.

Vaibhav’s fondness for souvenirs is unmatchable. Wherever he goes, he collects them. Be it maps, boarding passes, keychains, currency or t-shirts, he has some or the other thing from the places he has been to. He has a separate room at his home dedicated to all the souvenirs that he possesses. He stores all these novelties and mementos in special travel trunks.

‘…today, when everyone wants to be ahead of someone by blindly following the rat race, it is very essential to know and discover yourself as to what interests you and what you are passionate about.‘ shares Vaibhav, thus clarifying that for him, traveling is more about self-discovery than selfies.

From Cape Point in South Africa, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, Lisbon in Portugal, Seville in Spain, Verona in Italy, Bratislava in Slovakia, Hoi An in Vietnam, Chiang Mai and Koh Lanta in Thailand to Pamukkale in Turkey and St. Petersburg in Russia, the travel portfolio of Vaibhav entails a myriad of different destinations around the world.

Vaibhav is also the proud owner of Map My Escape, Instagram Handle and a blog  which is all about traveling. He frequently updates it with the details of his destinations including cultures, activities, food, transportation, etc. thus helping other backpackers and travelers from across the globe.

As you travel alone, you create stories, make new friends, and share your culture with others. Not only Vaibhav puts forth the beauty of India but he leaves no leaf unturned in describing the magnificence of our princely state and beautiful city.

There are many different and interesting things to see and do in this world. But if you believe that all of them come with a price, then remember Vaibhav – The Boy with His Backpack.
