Are We Easily Accepting the Insane Decisions of Government? | Internet Ban in Udaipur

Rajasthan is witnessing an action that is unprecedented in the history of a democracy anywhere in this world. Rajasthan officials enforced a two-day statewide internet ban with arbitrary geographical boundaries. The reason for this was to deter cheating at the Rajasthan State Constable Examination.

Administrators in each district had to pass orders to shut down the cellular internet (and home broadband services too maybe) on the last weekend from 8AM-5PM in the day [copy of an order from Divisional Commissioner, Udaipur]. This is the first time something of this scale happened but Rajasthan is no stranger to regional internet bans. We are being normalized for what is an extreme action. This time the reason for the shutdown was to deter cheating at a government examination. Shutdown internet for the whole state to stop cheating at an exam makes perfect sense.

Folks at Software Freedom Law Centre (SFLC) have been tracking the Internet Shutdowns across India for last four years. According to InternetShutdowns.in, state of Rajasthan has seen 25 shutdowns in this duration which is second highest for any state in India after J&K! SFLC’s handbook on Internet Shutdowns in India is fairly useful policy primer on the issue.

This meant a loss of livelihood to many (cab drivers, mobile recharge shops, food delivery businesses, remote employees, freelancers, the list goes on). Approximately, the transaction of around 20 crores was interrupted, 14,000 e-tickets were not booked, roadways tickets suffered a loss of 5% and similarly, numerous people suffered from the ban. This directly negated the whole idea of digital India and the push to digital payment that came after demonetization. This is probably harmful in a hundred more ways. None of these shutdowns are properly communicated. The government simply is not even interested to gauge in the economic and other losses as a result of these bans to a state of 6.89 Crore people!

It is even more important that you make yourself heard because there is no framework or metric right now that the Office of District Magistrate or any official higher in the ladder uses to decide what events/occasions duly require a blanket ban (if any at all!). By not speaking, you are surrendering your rights to access the internet which is equivalent only to let the government decide when you get to be online and when not.

I am not sure if you or your friends are directly affected but we still need to hold our administration accountable at this moment. Only because this is an immense power exercise!

We need our government to answer a few really basic questions:

  • What is the process of arriving at the conclusion of such a blanket ban?
  • How are geographical boundaries in ban enforced? Who is enforcing these boundaries?
  • What all exams in the future will require a blanket ban?
  • What is significantly different about these exams that we have to resort to an action of this scale? An order like this is unprecedented in the history of our country (or any country probably)

To put things in perspective, internet bans are used around the world even by authoritarian regimes only in dire needs and at times of revolt (think Arab spring). We are a liberal democracy seeing this enforced so casually. This is normalization!

Shimla and Manali – Road Trips from Delhi

A Shimla Experience

The frigid air of Shimla provides the backdrop to some of the coziest mountain experiences. The warm wooden architecture, the whistling pines and the sheer charm of its old world setting are enough to make visitors fall in love with India’s erstwhile summer capital. The people of Delhi are fortunate to be so close to some of the most striking Himalayan locations and to escape the buzz and the rising mercury, many embark on scenic road trips into the hills. Delhi to Shimla by car is a journey that would include traveling through cities like Panipat, Ambala and Chandigarh – interesting stops if time permits.

Shimla offers a blend of modernity and rugged natural beauty. Travellers can immerse themselves in the small town bustle of Lakkar Bazaar, a place where amazing bargains can be made. Other town landmarks include the many colonial buildings on the Ridge Road and the Christ Church. The cascades of the Chadwick waterfalls are a sight to behold. Adventurers can enjoy a trek to the famous Jakhu Temple. There are many other nature trails around the town. Some like the Glen and the Summer Hill trails are great for a romantic stroll through verdant alpine forests.

Trip to Manali

Manali is another top destination in Himachal Pradesh. The town’s heritage goes back hundreds of years when it was part of old trade routes into the Tibetan highlands and Central Asia. Today it has many identities, that of a Bohemian hill town that attracts backpackers from across the world, and that of a spiritual center important to Hindus and Buddhists. Delhi to Manali by car is often considered a stirring journey, as one leaves the flats of North India and climbs up massive sub-Himalayan hill ranges.

A trip to nearby Rohtang Pass is always recommended, a place of great views and desolate landscapes. Manali Sanctuary is home to many endangered species like the leopard, the musk deer and ibex. The Beas River is a hub of many adventure activities. One can indulge in some thrilling rafting rides and zip-lining in the river valley. There are also many fruit orchards around Manali, beautiful hillside plantations with mountains in the backdrop. Brighu Lake is another scenic landmark here. The Hadimba Temple is one of the most important spiritual centers here, an imposing wooden building surrounded by thick woods. Manali town has a vibrant social scene, there are many cafes and bars where one can unwind after a day of exploration.

Many choose the convenience of self drive rentals to fully enjoy these Himalayan escapades. Companies like Zoomcar offer assurances like 24/7 on-road support and all-India permits which is ideal for such long trips. Travellers also get to explore in total freedom and they enjoy complete privacy in a rental car. What better way to soak in the splendor of India’s iconic hill stations?

Do you know about the Maharana Pratap Vijay Smarak in Dewair?

A battle between the armies of Maharana Pratap and Mughals took place on Vijaya Dashami at Dewair valley. Both the Generals of the Mughal army Sultan Khan and Bahlol Khan got killed in the battle and as a result, the hill was captured by Maharana Pratap, which is now known as “Meva Ka Mathara”. This place is situated around 1 km north-west of the village of Dewair.Maharana Pratap Vijay Smarak in Dewair

In remembrance of this historic victory of Maharana Pratap, the State Government had constructed a huge National Victory Monument at Meva ka Mathara under Mewar Complex Plan. This monument was inaugurated by first female President of India her Excellency President Madam Pratibha Devi Singh Patil on 10th January 2012. Dedicated to the historic victory achieved, this monument is a humble tribute from the Nation to Maharana Pratap.Maharana Pratap Vijay Smarak in Dewair

History of Dewair

In the olden days, Dewair was ruled by various people, from Mair Caste to Deveda Rajputs. Dewair’s geographical location is very important from the strategic perspective as various ways to Marwar, Mewar, Gujarat, and Malva pass from Dewair.

The Battlefield “Dewair ki Naal” (Dewair Valley) is situated around 2 K.M. South West to the village Dewair. The famous battle of Dewair had started here on Vijaya Dashmi, 1582.

After Haldighati battle Mughal King Akbar established various Mughal posts in Mewar through Dewair Route. During his establishments, he continued to invade Mewar through his representatives Maan Singh, Bhagwan Das, Todar Mal and Shaah Baaz Khan etc. But Maharana Pratap continued to diffuse his invasions by using Guerrilla warfare. Maharana Pratap in this duration started re-uniting and strengthening his army and collecting weapons with the help of his allies from Sirohi, Ieder, Jalore etc.Maharana Pratap Vijay Smarak in Dewair

He spread a rumor that he had left Mewar and surrendered all his operations. By this diplomatic step, he deceived the Mughal emperor and attacked the strongest Mughal post situated at Dewair.

In this Epic Battle Maharana Pratap and his Son, Kunwar Amar Singh displayed extreme valor and courage. Maharana Pratap chopped Mughal Commander Bahalol Khan into two pieces including his horse in one strike of his sword. Whereas, his son Kunwar Amar Singh had killed Sultan Khan in one strike of his Spear.

Battlefield of Dewair Valley and Meva Ka Mathara are the evidence of the historic win of Maharana Pratap in Dewair.  Due to this historic win, Mughal forces had automatically left 36 posts in Mewar Region. Through this battle, Maharana Pratap took the revenge of Haldighati and undoubtedly, this war is the brightest milestone achieved by him during his lifetime.

Chapli Nature Trail at Dewair

To encourage the tourism in Dewair area both Tourism Department and Forest Department have together built this Nature Trail which is 6 km long. This Nature Trail is built from Maharana Pratap Vijay Smarak to Shiv Mandir, Chapli. It passes from a Game Sanctuary which renders a wonderful opportunity to the tourists to see the nature and wildlife in its purest form.Maharana Pratap Vijay Smarak in Dewair

Surrounded by the wildlife and forest, it also renders an opportunity for Horse and Camel safari. People who like adventure motorbike will find this place suitable for their ride.

Location of DewairMaharana Pratap Vijay Smarak in Dewair

It is situated on the northern front of the Aravali range between Madaria and Kumbhalgarh. It is situated on National Highway No. 8, consequently, 118 km and 50 km North of Udaipur and District Headquarter Rajasmand and 300 km south of the Capital Jaipur.
