International Qualifications for Udaipur’s School Going Children

University of Cambridge

With tremendous growth now parents of Udaipur can afford international qualifications for their school going children. Especially those who are planning to send their children abroad for higher education. Unfortunately at present there is no school offering international qualifications in Udaipur, but IB and IGCSE are quite common options the parents of Udaipur recognizing now. Presently these curriculum’s are limited to elite class and upper middle class, as these curriculum’s demand for little higher fee structure.

International Baccalaureate, popularly known as IB (www.ibo.org), is running its programme in more than 100 countries since 1960. The IB Curriculum is designed as an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with international examinations that prepares students, for success at university and life beyond.

The IB curriculum is divided into three levels, PYP (Primary Year Programme) is for Primary years, MYP (Middle Year Programme) for middle school students and DP (Diploma Programme) for senior secondary level students. IB has gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities and boards.

The programme:

  • provides a package of education that balances subject breadth and depth, and considers the nature of knowledge across disciplines.
  • encourages international-mindedness in IB students, starting with a foundation in their own language and culture developed a positive attitude to learning that encourages one to become lifelong learner.
  • gains a reputation for its rigorous external assessment with published global standards.
  • emphasizes the development of the whole student–physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically.

So far, India has 74 IB schools. IB curriculum is exclusive for children belong to upper middle class and the rich.  Its fee structure is anytime higher than the RBSE and CBSE schools. Out of these 74 IB schools Rajasthan has just two schools offering IB Curriculum at present and a few are in the process to get affiliation. Interestingly these two IB schools claim that the fee in these schools is the least in India. They charge somewhere between Rs 1.5 to 2 lakh per annum. A few IB schools in Delhi and Mumbai charge as far as Rs 6 lakh to 9 lakh per annum.

IB students have an edge in appearing for exams like CET, PMT, IIT, BMS, CPT and CLAT. They are better equipped due to the in-depth self-study undertaken during the IB Programme.  The assessment of students is done through internal tests, projects, portfolios, commentaries and essays. Even participation in community service is assessed.

The main highlight of this curriculum is that many universities in the UK and US award transfer credits to IB Diploma graduates. These credits could translate into saving from six months to a year during the undergraduate degree courses.

The Association of Indian Universities (www.aiu.org) recognizes the IB Diploma (Class XII) equivalent to plus two class of CBSE, ICSE and other state boards.

Cambridge International Examinations (www.cie.org.uk) is another famous international curriculum which is spreading at very fast pace in India. Like IB, CIE (Cambridge International Examinations) is also outspreaded in more than 120 countries; Cambridge International Examination is a part of Cambridge University UK.

The University of Cambridge International Examinations hands out various qualifications. For Primary level CIE offers CIPP (Cambridge International Primary Programme), for Middle school Secondary Level-1 and Level-2 are on offer which includes Checkpoint for Grade 8, for Grade 9 and 10 exams like IGCSE, O-Level and ICE. And for plus two level students CIE offer A-Level programme.

At present there are 254 CIE-affiliated schools in India, with around 8 of them in Rajasthan. These eight schools offer different Cambridge International Examination programmes like Checkpoint, IGCSE, ICE, O and A level Exams.

Its IGCSE programme is the most popular programme in the world among 14 to 16 year age group. The main highlights of this programme are wide range of subject options, division of each subject as per the learner’s capabilities as core and extended level, and the most interesting one is on gaining C grade or up, in English as first language or as second language, the IGCSE student needs not to get into TOEFL and IELTS Exams. IGCSE English with Grade C or up is widely accepted by all Anglophone countries like UK, US, Australia, NZ, Canada and SA.

IB and CIE Curriculums are becoming popular day by day in India and Udaipur is also becoming familiar with these terms. If you want to know more you can get in touch with these boards by visiting their websites WWW.IBO.ORG  and WWW.CIE.ORG.UK.

Resolutions: Welcome 2012

Days passed, months ended and here we are about to bid goodbye to 2011 . Yes! Its high NEW YEAR TIME guys and apart from celebrations, hangouts and shopping, everyone wants to get the best out of them in the upcoming year 😀 The first thing that clicks every individual’s mind is WHAT changes they want in them, WHAT new they intend to bring in their life :O. As we all are aware that human wants and zests are unlimited, so the identification of immediate longing plays an enormous role. This is what defines a resolution.

Whenever I see New Year approaching, the first thought in my mind (of course after deciding the New Year gift) is what to resolve for the next year. One should adjudicate their goals according to their capabilities. To share old memories, in our School times, every girl (GIRLS CONVENT SCHOOL) had to resolve the best thing she aspires. Though we never followed what we resolved, but it was fun knowing what everyone wanted to achieve. Funny upshots came up like “I WOULD DATE THE BEST GUY OF THE CITY”, “I WOULD MAKE MYSELF A PERFECT ZERO FIGURE”  and many more ( trust me, girls don’t miss a single chance to prove themselves SILLY). One of the toppers of the class suggested providing lunch to the poor children (TO MENTION-the children coming to our very own school for free education). That soon became the resolution of our whole class, and believe me, that CHARITY gave the best of the feel deep down the heart.

Coming back to the concerned topic, there are many resolutions one can take to make himself, his family, and even the entire city happier and a joy to live in 2012. To give a start, I can see almost all the youngsters, despite knowing about the disadvantages and the health issues that may arise in the future are addicted to consumption of drugs, liquor, and most of all, Hukkah. A local paper of Udaipur dated 21st December 2011, reads out that Udaipurites have resolved to fight against the consumption of anti-social consumables like Liquor, Cigarettes, Hukkah, etc, which is a statement of pride in itself. Surveys also state and swear that Hukka is being banned in Udaipur from the very first day of 2012 itself. With the rising drug addiction and high stream of money, it’s high time to make everyone aware about the pros and cons of these drugs.

With high number of poverty stuck illiterate people, it’s our responsibility to raise voice against expanding social issues like child marriage, female infanticide/feticide (Both are at its highest peak in Rajasthan). It is the duty of Youth to resolve to scrap out these problems as well as ameliorate them among the ignorant. This can be the next resolution in one’s life if someone really wants to help the society as well.

Huge numbers of accidents are taking place in the city because of rash driving. Recently the cover story in a local daily reported against a boy aged 16 years riding his bike at 120 plus kmph, and hitting a herd (group of cattle) that came on the same way. So everyone should resolve to prove to be good citizen and prove to be a better human. Let no animal be injured, but most important, be responsible while driving on the roads, as you are even responsible for the traffic that move around you.

Bringing the most important topic into concern and admiring my own city-the city of lakes. We all know its beauty has made it the favourite tourism spot in whole of the Rajasthan, and even the world. So, resolving to keep the city clean and being eco friendly will be a great contribution. It is in our hands to take Udaipur to a new height. There are many points one can just start up with. So Udaipurites- think innovative, give a chance to yourself, resolve high and achieve big.

For the cessation, I would just end up saying that do something which brings a positive alteration because WE, THE YOUTH CAN CREATE A DIFFERENCE 😀

HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone in advance. 🙂

Customs of Christmas celebration vary in the vast expansion of India, this varies largely because of local culture of influence. Generally, on the day of Christmas, people of Christmas fraternity gather in church for worship. Here, they attend Church services and sing carols. There is also the concept of Midnight in India. In fact, it is a very important service and holds great religious significance amongst the Christians of the country. On the night of 24th December, all the Christian families attend the Midnight mass at the local churches. The Churches in India are also decorated with the Poinsettia flowers. In South India, for instance, Christians light clay lamps on the rooftop and walls of their houses, the same way as Hindus decorate during the “Diwali” festival.  . Besides, in several states of India a popular custom is to decorate customs is to decorate customs banana or mango tree instead of traditional Pine tree. In northwest India, the tribal Christians of the Bhil tribe go out night after night for a week during Christmas to sing their equivalent of carols the whole night through. In Mumbai, which has one of the largest Roman Catholic communities in India, there is a tradition to depict nativity scenes and decorate home with big stars.

Udaipur celebrated the year with lots of joy and happiness. The celebrations though started long before the Christmas day itself. There was an Inter-Church Caroling too, held in the Pentecostal Church (situated at Rani Road) this year, on Dec 23.

Father Kulranjan Nicholas, Parish Priest, The Our Lady of Fatima Cathedral (popularly known as St. Paul’s church) said that the highlight would be the Vigil Mass on Dec 24 from 11pm to 2am, where Bishop Joseph Pathalil would be the main celebrant of the Mass, assisted by more than 10 priests. “It will be in Hindi and after the Mass, we will have refreshments as the clergy and parishioners to greet each other a blessed Christmas. It is a time for family get-togethers, praying together. There will also be cultural programmes” Fr. Ranjan said. He trusted the dedicated team of people in charge of the project will come up with a remarkable and outstanding display of the Nativity Scene. This week, Fr Ranjan (and his assistant priests) has/have also been going around this week giving sacraments to the sick and the bedridden. Fr Ranjan added that a blood donation campaign is also being planned tentatively to be held on Dec 29 in the church premises. Check out the pictures below to see the Christmas celebrations in Udaipur
