Rumour: McDonald’s Closes in Udaipur!

McDonald’s in Udaipur is closed since 2 to 3 days. And there might be a possibility that it remains closed from now! Let us tell you why.

In the latter part of this year McDonald’s India Private Limited (MIPL) said it has not been able to verify if the unauthorized McDonald’s restaurants operated by CPRL in North and East India are able to fulfill McDonald’s standards, including those involving supplies, operations and safety standards and quality required for McDonald’s products. MIPL also stated that it has to close all the McDonald’s outlets immediately.

Connaught Plaza Restaurants Limited (CPRL) is the 50:50 joint venture franchise with McDonald’s and runs 169 outlets in North and East India.

Apparently, McDonald’s in Udaipur comes under CPRL and has to get closed!!! And because of the same reason the McD at the Celebration Mall, the only outlet of Mc Donald’s in Udaipur, is closed since 2-3 days and might remain closed hereafter.

MIPL has terminated the franchise licensing agreement in September, over management issues that disallowed CPRL to use the McDonald’s brand name, logo, and trademarks.

Can’t Imagine Life Without Internet? See What Udaipur’s 90’s Kids Did!

Today everything is dominated by the virtual world. Everyone hangs out on social media, make new friends on Facebook, and update pictures on Instagram and so on. Even the busiest person would take out time to post their Facebook check-in. While today’s kids are growing up within the confinement of the Internet, we, the 90s kids were roaming around in our neighborhood, hanging out with our mum and dad or probably at our friend’s place.

I am sure nostalgia will be hitting hard after this!!!

Attending Birthday Parties At Home

The definition of a friend was ‘who invited us to their birthday party’. Birthday parties were then celebrated at home, and served was some finger-licking home cooked food. Don’t we miss it sometimes? The trend is quite lost with time.

Going to the Neighbor’s House to Play

Either daily in the evening or in the summer vacation during the daytime. So many memories of playing in the houses of friends are stacked up in our minds.

Went To Play Around In the Nearest Park

What was life if not running around in the park and playing some random games like ‘pakadni’!?

SWINGS!!!

‘Jhule’ was the favorite thing in those days and I was certainly a lover of swings. Weren’t you all?

Hanging out with family

Hanging out with family was a frequent sight, unlike today. There were a lot of places frequently visited with my friends and family and these places were nothing less than paradise.

Saheliyo Ki Baadi

The beautiful Saheliyo Ki Baadi was one big thing for the 90s kid! On special occasions like distant relatives visiting us, called for a quick visit to Saheliyo Ki Baadi. Can you remember when the last time you went to Saheliyo-ki-Baadi was?

Nehru Garden

I bet a lot of children haven’t been to Nehru Garden. This is an exotic landmark for our City of Lakes. When we were kids, it was one fantasy place for us- something which is floating over the water of the Lake Fateh Sagar.

Musical Fountain of Deen Dayal Park

Because of lack of preservation and promotion, this park is sadly visited by none today. The maximum you see is tourists coming there to get into the ropeway for the sunset point at Karni Mata.

Gulab Bagh Zoo

I would fall short of words to describe the excitement that my mind was filled with when we planned to visit the Gulab Bagh Zoo. It was and is the only zoo in the city, but quite sadly is in its ruined state. A whole day-out used to be planned, and the toy train added more fantasy quotient to the entire day.

Sukhadia Circle

What would you do if you didn’t buy a balloon from the ‘balloon wale bhaiyya’ at Sukhadia Circle? ‘Chana-Chor-Garam’ and all the ice creams of the world, not forgetting to mention the paddle boat!

Moti Magri, Guru Govind Singh Park, Dudh Talai, Sanjay Garden

These parks were the best thing of our childhood! Probably today kids don’t even know where these are, but for the 90s kids, this was the thing. Moti Magri was a bit different from what it looks today and same for the Guru Govind Singh Park overlooking Lake Fatehsagar. The gardens at Dudh Talai Garden (Manikya Lal Verma Garden) with oodles of swings were a child’s heaven. Sanjay garden has a beautiful fountain that was very enticing back then.

Must Read: The Third Edition of the Udaipur Bird Festival 2017

All over the world, Udaipur is famous for its lustrous lakes, verdant hills, national parks, sanctuaries, forts, royal palaces, ‘havelis’ and temples. A lesser known feature is its varied wildlife. Udaipur and its neighborhood are home to a huge variety of avian species.

Organized with the aim of creating public awareness about the need for protection of wildlife and at the same time promoting tourism is the city, the three-day long Udaipur Bird festival opened with a bang on Dec 23rd. The third edition of the annual event began with the opening of the Golden Park by Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria.  Located on the bank of Lake Pichola, the park is named Golden Park as at the sunset the reflection of sun rays in the water turns everything golden. The spot adds another beautiful sunset point in the city to such places at Sajjangarh, Fatehsagar, and Karni Mata Mandir. This theme-based park is to have yellow flowers and plants.

The park being developed with a grant of 46 lacs by UIT Udaipur in an area of about two hectares is to have several attractions for visitors like safe Selfie points, ‘Tabla’ shaped ‘Muddas’ to sit on, three beautiful chattris, walking track, adventure point, cafeteria and a portion with dense forest. There would be a herbal park with a variety of about 25 varieties of herbs. Visitors and bird lovers would be delighted to watch about 150 species of resident and migratory birds. In the next phase dummies of animals, especially of those that are extinct or in great danger are also to be put up so as to give the young generation an idea of an evolution of the animal world. Near Kamal Talai, would be demonstrated how panthers eat, drink, rest and hunt. Three rooms are also to be built.

On the first day of the fair, began a photography and stamp exhibition on birds in the Information Centre.

On display is the treasure of knowledge about the daily routine, migration etc of birds in the form of stamps and paintings in the big gallery. There are 126 photographs of about 120 bird species taken by 40 photographers. Also, on display are color artistic photographs of terrestrial and water birds both residents and migratory birds of countries such as Mongolia, Siberia, and of European countries. Photographs show flying owls, geese, myna sitting on cows, Saras, flying cranes; a peacock sitting with the background of rising moon, ‘baaz’ hunting its prey, flamingo searching food in water etc. are some of the big attractions. Being highly appreciated are over 5000 stamps out of 4 lac collected by Pushpa Khamesra of Udaipur.

These range from the ones issued between 1871 and 2017. Also, the lively photographs of the life cycle of four butterflies by bird expert Mukesh Panwar of Dungarpur and Neha Manohar of Udaipur.

In the seminar of Udaipur Bird festival on the second day, the participants who are bird experts from India and abroad were on their opinion that sincere and concerted efforts were needed for the protection of birds.

They presented detailed and authentic information about endangered birds species and the condition of wetlands in the world. Asad Rehmani, former Director, Bombay Natural History Society talked about specialties of incredible birds of India. He said that the biodiversity of India was the best in the world. Mukhya Vanjeev Pratipalak, G.V Reddy talked about the ecosystem services of birds and said that if we can save the environment, there would be no need to filter water. He talked about keeping water unpolluted through natural techniques. Bird specialist K.P.S Gopi Sachdev talked about 15 species of cranes that he said cranes were two hundred fifty million years old. He expressed deep concern about the fast declining number of species in Asia.

The living pictures of the business of birds in the country by Rajat Bhargava of BNHS shocked the audience. A detailed presentation of the bird festival was also made. According to Manoj Kulshresta, state coordinator Rajasthan Water Birds Census Programme, out of 11,000 species of birds in the world, 1400 were found in India. He said that one Bargular bird eats 3 insects in one minute and 18 species of this bird come to Udaipur that eat up 15000 insects in a dip. If we can save this one species we would not need much pesticides.

Bird Race that has been introduced for the first time turned out to be a big attraction. Bird watchers from Udaipur and other places participated in it enthusiastically and tried to watch birds from a distance without disturbing them. The first prize was won by team King Vulture led by Pradeep Sukhwas that spotted 170 bird species. Led by Pratap Singh Chundawat the hornbill team saw 113 species. 160 species were found by Indian Pitta Team led by Vinai Dave. Falcon Team that was led by Anil Rodgers spotted 132 species. Team Garud led by Shailendra Tiwari found 147 species while 150 species were spotted by Raptor Team led by S. Sardania.

Cyclists Touring India To Support Polio Eradication are in Udaipur, Know Why!

This duo, Pavan, and Bhagyashree are cycling across India to spread awareness about Polio. They are in Udaipur today and are quite grateful for their journey so far. I had a chance to have a conversation with Pavan. Their enthusiasm and zeal left me amazed. Have a read of my inspiring conversation with M.J. Pavan.

  1. Tell me about you and your mate; how did you come together to cycle across the country?

I am M.J.Pavan, a mechanical engineer from Bangalore. My cycling mate is Bhagyashree Sawant who is an MSc in Phycology. I have cycled from Delhi to Leh in 14 days covering 1400km and Bhagyashree has climbed Mount Everest twice up to 8000 meters.

Cyclists Touring India To Support Polio Eradication are in Udaipur, Know Why!
M.J. Pavan and Bhagyshree Sawant

We both are in the same Rotaract club that is the Rotaract club of Bangalore Orchards.  Since we both were into adventure sports we took up this expedition where we can think of using our expertise for a noble cause.

  1. When did you start this tour?

We started our tour on 2nd of October, from Palampur, Himachal Pradesh.

  1. Tell us about your journey so far?

Till now it’s been a great journey. We are meeting new people every day and it is a great opportunity for us to come across and know about different cultures in India. Since India is diverse in all aspects every day is a new experience for us.

  1. What made you opt for this?

Most of the people in India are not much aware of polio. If we all are healthy and free from polio today it is because of Rotary International which has worked selflessly to eradicate this disease from India hence we are carrying the public image of Rotary contribution in making India polio-free. Polio is caused by contaminated water and it is still there in 2 countries in the world. Since we were part of Rotary it is our duty to create as much awareness as possible to get vaccination done for all the children below 5 years or else even a single relapse will be a threat to the whole nation. Hence we are visiting school across the country and spreading awareness about cleanliness and hygiene.

We opted for cycling because children get inspired very soon when they hear about our expedition and see us on cycle.Cyclists Touring India To Support Polio Eradication are in Udaipur, Know Why!

  1. Any experience during the course of this tour which is worth mentioning?

We had a lot of experience during the course of this journey. One such astounding fact that we came across was in Basti, a place in Bihar. We met a doctor who is a rotary member, he was around 75+ years old and serving patients free of cost since the time he became a doctor. India was declared as polio-free in 2015 but in Basti, it was polio-free in 2013 itself. This was something we weren’t aware of and was a new addition to our overall experience.

  1. How does it feel to travel through the country for a cause?

It feels great to be a part of a noble cause and travel for the same. It gives a lot of experience as we do not know the road conditions or climate. We build confidence, management skills and learn other necessary things which are required for life.

  1. Where are you planning to go next, after Udaipur?

We are going towards Ahmedabad from Udaipur.

  1. How are you coping up with the weather in Udaipur and in other parts of India?

Weather is challenging. But we are prepared for everything; we have clothing essentials for all weather condition.

Cyclists Touring India To Support Polio Eradication are in Udaipur, Know Why!

  1. How many kilometers will you cover and in what time at the end of this tour?

We are planning to cover 20000km across India and we are planning to finish in the first week of March.

In the end, we would like to express our gratitude towards our following supporters:

  • Jeep

  • Rotary Bangalore Orchards
  • Rotary District 3190
  • Rotaract Bangalore Orchards.

We would like to extend our special thanks to Rotary Club of Udaipur for the royal hospitality and giving us an opportunity to meet the prince of Udaipur LakshayRaj Singh Mewar.

Udaipur’s Girl Prithvi Is Making Us Proud

This girl from Udaipur is making it big as an entrepreneur! Curious? Read further to know what she does and how she is making it a success.

Prithvi Jain, a Chemical Engineer from MNIT is the young and promising entrepreneur from Udaipur. She was a part of the Entrepreneurship Cell during her college and worked as a Student Exchange Manager at AIESEC. After working with AIESEC, she realized that by having her own company, even a small success can make her very happy. This was the turning point of her life!

Doing something for the people had always been the prime motive for Prithvi and that is how she focused on her goal. Let us know about her startup- VerboLabs – what all it does and how it works.

 “VerboLabs Languages

The basic idea behind developing VerboLabs is to connect people from different parts of the world by breaking the language barrier. For instance, you want to watch a cookery show, but it is in French and so you cannot understand it. This is a problem for the viewer as well as the show creator that they are unable to reach a wider audience. VerboLabs breaks these boundaries by helping the content creators through subtitles and dubbing in different languages. This eight months old startup has already partnered with a lot of big media houses and e-learning companies from all over the world and is providing services to them.

Prithvi Jain

Upon asking about the hurdles she faced, Prithvi told us, “The biggest hindrance to my business is the time difference. We work with clients and employees based in different countries and so, the time zone is something that we need to manage. We have to be available 24*7 to cater to the needs of different clients. Sometimes I feel sleep deprived as I have calls with the clients at 4am also. But, it is okay. You have to leave something to achieve something!”

Her motivation has always been her motto; which is working with determination, having a high learning spirit and delivering quality work at the designated time.

The beauty of being an entrepreneur is that you are your own boss. You get to work in your own environment. Entrepreneurship is booming all over the globe and people in India are starting to have their own ideas turn into a business.

Prithvi’s advice for the budding entrepreneurs

Giving an advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, she says, “The most important thing that I have learned is not to be dependent on one resource. You should always have a back-up. In a business, you have to be very careful about the image you build. Your work and attitude should reflect that your client is really important for you.”

Women have always been great leaders; our girl Prithvi also aspires to become one among the leading ladies.

In the words of a great Greek Writer Nikos Kazantzakis – ‘In order to succeed, we must first believe that we can’. This certainly holds true for every aspiring entrepreneur.

Prithvi is living up to her dream, and with this note, we wish her the best of luck for the future!
