Raksha Bandhan: Joyous Festival of Eternal Kinship

rakhi celebrations

Experiencing joys and sorrows together, sharing enormous laughters and wiping tears, cute chit-chats and endless pillow-fights, sense of togetherness and the never-ending complaints! All these sweet and tangy tastes of emotions can be found in the most beautiful relation, yes, none other than the brother-sister relation! These colorful shades of memories of brother-sister relation becomes worth cherishing even more while tying the sacred knot of rakhi on the auspicious day of Raksha Bandhan every year.

After the beautiful green monsoon season, rakhi that falls on shravan purnima, brings with it the colorful “season of festivals”. There are several interesting historical evidences as well as mythological descriptions mingled up with this festival that reminds us of its significance. The most popular historical narrative is about Rani Karnavati of Chittor who sent a rakhi to the mughal emperor, humayun, after which he fought against Bahadur Shah Zafar and restored the kingdom to rani’s son. Raksha bandhan is mentioned in our epics as festival of gods. Yamuna used to tie rakhi to his brother yama (god of death), impressed by which he declared that whoever got a rakhi tied would become immortal! Another incidence from the epic Mahabharata concerns draupadi who once tied a torn piece of her saari to lord Krishna’s wrist to stanch the bleeding from a battlefield wound. Krishna got so much touched by her action that he declared her to be his sister and always protected her.

Sweet Shop during Rakhi in Udaipur

Rakhi Shopping

Almost one month before the commencement of rakhi, the market gets laded up with fancy, attractive and colorful rakhis of different shapes and sizes. Almost every shop in Udaipur, be it sweet shops, garment shops, gift shops, or any other shop, all are flooded with attractive rakhi gifts. Ladies shop for new clothes and beautiful rakhi gifts specially the one that has to be sent to their brothers staying far.  Family gatherings, celebrations, exchange of sweets and gifts, lots of noise, singing and dancing!!! Festivals are the celebration of togetherness as being as a united family and like any Indian festival, raksha bandhan is not an exception. On the day of Rakhi, sisters decorate the beautiful pooja thali with diya, roli, chawal, rakhi thread and sweets. She bestows her brother with gifts and blessings while carrying out the rituals. In return, brothers wish her a good life and pledges to take care of her lifelong.

Raksha Bandhan

Raksha bandhan goes beyond the confines of blood and familial relations. The tradition encourages celebrating the sacred festival of rakhi with the neighbors and close friends; thus allowing a strong social structure. Though it is a festival denoting National sentiments of harmony, raksha bandhan is the most special festival for all the siblings.

We brothers and sisters share the most beautiful, divine and undying relation of all. One can see us flipping out on each other like mads and then having a blast together, the very next moment. It’s so cool making fun of others together and in next to no time, realizing that you yourself have become a joke by the other. You annoy, interfere, criticize, and indulge in mammoth huffs, gasps, in sulks, in snide remarks. You borrow, you break. You monopolize the bathroom. But, but, but! If catastrophe should strike, you are the ones defending each other against all comers. You share childhood memories and grown-up dreams. You are the ones who are there with each other from the dawn of the personal stories to the inevitable dusk. You are the mirror, shining back at each other with a world of possibilities. The witness, who sees you at your worst and best, and loves you anyway. You are each other’s partner in sweet crimes, the midnight companions, pillow fighters, someone who knows when you are smiling, even in the dark. No, we haven’t gone diverted from the topic of raksha bandhan at all. Actually, Raksha bandhan is that special sentimental festival that salutes this sweet and sour relation and gives us a chance to treasure a day memorizing all the childhood days and discover the deep affections in heart for our siblings and all the kinfolk we love.

So, Udaipies, don’t miss the chance to make your siblings feel special on this special day. Something that I personally would like to devote to my sweet younger brother is as- “I sought my soul, but my soul I could not see. I sought my God, but my God elude me. I sought my brother and I found all three.” Have a bash, Udaipies! Happy Raksha Bandhan! 😀

This full moon day our hearts are in brim
Feeling of faith and serenity in mind.
We light the lamps and our hears glow
Radiance of happiness and peace are in flow.
Harmonious homes are like streams of joy
Flowing and flourishing the landscape en route.
Nobility in heart and character in deed
Righteous homes alone make a beautiful State.
Sisters will tie the thread on the brothers
Abiding them to do only what is right and clean.
Put the Kumkum and blessed rice on the head
Where will dwell right thoughts and noble action.

Shree Shree Durga Puja: Traditions Penned by the initiators of Durga Puja in Udaipur

About the Author: Mr. Anand Bhattacharya is an Advocate, and belongs to the successor generation of  late Shri Nripendralal Bhattacharya, who started the Durga Pooja ceremony in Udaipur in the year 1956 , at Bindu Bhawan, 49,Shastri Marg, Udaipur. Since then it is being celebrated there every year at the same place with spirits of great enthusiasm, zeal, and spirituality, and the culture is inherited by generations.

Durga Pooja | UdaipurBlog

Shree Shree Durga Pooja”, which is being celebrated during the Shukla Paksh of Bengali Kartik month every year, known as “Navratri” in the Hindi speaking area of the country, is not just a religious ceremony for the Bengalis. It is a religious-cum-social function and as the festival approaches, the heart of every Bengali is enveloped by the feeling of joy and pleasure. This is a time of the year, when all the new and major purchases are done, new books, new films, new songs, new designs of cloths etc. are released and Bengalis, specially those residing in Kolkata, often plan site seeing trips to various places, specially because the schools also remain closed for around fifteen days during this time. The business, especially for those dealing in consumer goods, is very brisk. Shops are flooded with fresh stock of consumer goods and the market is full of customers.

Normally the Pooja used to be celebrated, initially in Chaitra Month (i.e. around March-April) in the olden days. However, it is said that the Pooja during this time (September-October month) of the year, was started by Shree Raam during his fight with Ravan, when  he was not able to overcome the strength of Ravan. This Pooja is therefore also known as “Akaal Bodhan” [Akaal means – untimely and bodhan means – commencement]. It is also very interesting to note, that as per the belief, this Pooja was performed for Raam, by none other than Ravan himself, who was a Brahmin of the highest order, as there was no other able Brahmin available at the place where such Pooja was performed. This was done by Ravan, knowing fully well that the aim of this Pooja was for vanquishing him. This shows the depth of our culture, where duty is given priority over every other thing – even the life of the person.

Durga Puja Aarti | UdaipurBlog

As against the Navratri pooja, which starts from the first day of Shukla Paksh [ekum], the Durga Pooja as per Bengali system, starts from the sixth day or “Shashti”. There are two Puraans – Devi Puraan and Kalika Puraan – under one of which the Pooja is performed as per Bengali system.

Another very important fact which requires to be taken note of, is that the idol of Shree Shree Durga Mataji is made of completely natural (mostly bio-degradable) commodities. The basic structure or the body of the idols is made by straw being tied to bamboos by jute string (sutli). Over this structure of straw,  the first coat of mud, impregnated with chaff of rice, is applied. Addition of chaff, strengthens the binding quality of the mud. Once this first coat of mud gets dried up, the second and smooth coat of pure and closely sieved mud is applied, which gives the final shape and smoothness to the idols. Once this coat gets dried up, a primary coating of chalk is applied on the mud. After that coat dries up, natural water colors are applied thereon. These water colors are dissolved in the extract obtained by boiling tamarind seeds in water. That makes the colors permanent. After drying up of the colour , the whole idol is coated with a fine solution of sabudana [TROPICANA SEEDS] boiled and dissolved in water. This acts as a laminating film for the colours, and protects it from atmospheric effects like fading out etc.. The hairs are made of finely combed jute, and the black colour to the hairs is imparted by boiling the duly combed jute with Harde, Catechu (Kattha) and certain herbs. Nowadays of course readymade hairs are available. Thus the idol consists mostly of natural inputs. Therefore, this idol is more eco-friendly than the POP idols that are being made in other parts of the country. It may also be noted that except for the faces (which are also made of mud) whole of the idol is made by hand and dies are not used. This is a traditional art, and specialized by some families who are doing this work for generations. Luckily, as the number of poojas and requirement of idol is ever increasing, this art is not a dying art and actually new artists are getting added to this profession every year.

Idol Making Process Durga Puja | UdaipurBlog

The format of the idol which is being worshipped during this Durga Pooja ceremony is known as “Mahishasur Mardini Roop” i.e. the roop or form, which Maa Durga adopted for vanquishing and ultimately killing “Mahishasur”, who was one of the most powerful asur (evil power) of all times. It is said that when “Mahishasur” became so powerful that even the Gods (Devtas] started getting tormented by him, all the Gods contributed their powers and created this “Mahishasur Mardini Roop” and in that form, duly fortified with the strength of various Gods, Maa Durga annihilated “Mahishasur”. This format of Maa Durga therefore is known as “Shakti Roop of Maa Durga” and in this roop, Maa Durga  has ten hands, each wielding a special weapon known as ayudh, which were contributed by various different Gods.

Alongwith the main idol of Maa Durga, riding a lion and seen as killing “Mahishasur”, there are other idols namely “Ganesh”,  “Maha Laxmi”, “Maha Saraswati” and ”Kartik”. Each of these idols are manifestations of certain virtues. Lord Ganesh is manifestation of wisdom, Maha Laxmi Ji is manifestation of wealth, Maha Saraswati Ji is manifestation of learning and Kartik Ji is the manifestation of administration/organization. If the whole idol is perceived with this viewpoint, it would very clearly covey the message that if one wants to overcome evil powers (whether external or internal) one would need to have integrated and concentrated physical power (Maa Durga herself); wisdom (Ganesh ji); financial resources (Maha Laxmi Ji); learning (Maha Saraswati ji) and administration/organization (Kartik Ji). This reasserts the position that this Pooja teaches a method by which any person can overcome the vices by augmenting his physical powers, wisdom, wealth, learning and administrative capacity.

Durga Idols | UdaipurBlog

The Pooja starts from Shashti (sixth day) and continues upto Dussera. It is said that on completion of the Pooja, Raam was able to win over and kill Ravan, and that is the reason why completion of the Shree Shree Durga Pooja coincides with the Ravan-Kumbhkarna-Meghnath effigy burning.

Bindu Bhawan Durga Puja | UdaipurBlog

The most important Pooja during the whole Durga Pooja ceremony is “Sandhi pooja”. This pooja is to be performed within a time of 48 minutes. These 48 minutes are carved out of “Ashtami tithi” and “Navami tithi” – 24 minutes from the end of Ashtami and 24 minutes from the beginning of Navami – these 48 minutes constitute Sandhi Pooja time. It is said that during this time “Mahishasur” was killed by Maa Durga, because “Mahishasur” had a boon that he will not be killed in any “tithi”. Sandhi Pooja therefore is of immense importance, because the whole purpose of vanquishing “Mahishasur” was achieved during this brief span on 48 minutes when there was no tithi in particular. The sandhi pooja is to be commenced, performed and completed within these 48 minutes, and there is every attempt to ensure that there is no lapse during this pooja.

Balidaan or sacrifice is a part of every days’ pooja. While sacrifice of goat or buffaloes used to be offered very commonly in the past, nowadays normally Balidaan of sugarcane, gourd (petha) and banana [jointly known as ‘bali’] is offered. However, still in some places sacrifice of goat is being offered. There are four balidaans during the Pooja – each after completion of the poojas of Saptami, Ashtami, Navami and of Sandhi Pooja. It is essential that the “Bali” is cut by one stroke of the weapon.

The Durga Pooja ceremony ends with immersion of the idol of Maa Durga in the water – in lakes, rivers, sea etc. . Since the idol is made of mostly bio-degradable items, it does not pollute the water resources. The immersion ceremony is followed by each greeting  the other and touching the feet of elders and obtaining their blessings. Eating of sweets is a part of each such ceremony!

Visarjan | UdaipurBlog

It is also considered by most of the Bengalis, specially ladies, that Maa Durga comes to the earth during this time, as a married daughter comes to visit her parents once in a year, and therefore everyone wants to offer the best offerings that he or she can, to Maa during this pooja. Similarly after immersion (visarjan) , ladies are quite sad and many weep when the idol of Maa Durga is taken away for visarjan. Therefore, it is again reiterated that this is not just a religious ceremony but a social festival in which everyone gets emotionally involved.  This probably is a time in the life of every Bengali, when every one tries to forget his woes and misfortunes and tries to be happy and enjoy the occasion. This festival is therefore an in-built aspect of the life of every Bengali and in whichever part of the world he may be during these days, he would always wish to be in the Pooja atmosphere, with his near and dear ones, at least during these few days. Probably Maa also comes down to the earth during this time – because God is nothing but a manifestation of the devotion that is contained in everyone’s heart !!!

world tourism day at udaipur

Today it’s World Tourism Day; an exceptionally important day for tourism in the entire world.

India places itself in the top visited countries by the tourists, thus, Tourism day is momentous to the country. India has for long been a sightseer’s paradise, that the magnificent opportunities it offers the tourists often tend to be overlooked.

The City of Lakes, Udaipur in the historically glorious state of Rajasthan stands in the list of most beautiful places in the world. It is one of the favourite tourist destinations amongst the people. Udaipur being “The Kashmir of Rajasthan” fusing a bundle of wonders in it is one of the destinations which populace of any age would love to visit.

It is the main attraction for the people to stopover and relinquish themselves in the exquisiteness and the essence of this place.

The winsomeness of this city is on its peak after the monsoons as it has overflowing lakes, an ambrosial weather and a lush green environment which also makes it a romantic destination.

A conglomeration of hotels and restaurants with their luxurious and exotic facilities for the tourists is the best part.

Here, sightseeing can be done at various places. Apart from the natural beauty, the heritage culture of Udaipur is also of great importance. Places like The City Palace, the Sajjanghar fort, Baghor ki Haweli, Jagdish Temple, Saheliyo ki Badi etc. preserve a heritage culture and are of great prestige to the people of Udaipur.

Renowned by the numerous lakes present here, some of which are Fatehsagar, Pichola, Swaroop sagar, Govardhan sagar, Udaisagar, Badi lake, Jaisamand, Bada Madaar, Chota Madaar, thus, Udaipur holds a remarkable place in its exotic beauty and culture.

tourism udaipur

Nattiness has become an important issue for the city now days. Lakes are very essential sources for water supply in Udaipur. This lake water is used by the local hoods for drinking and other household purposes.  The basic problem that is arising is related to the sanitation of the lakes. People without caring throw wastes in the water which makes the lakes filthy. This in turn pollutes the water and causes water to stink and increases mosquito breeding in it. This affects the environment to a great extent and leads to health problems in the horde.

Thus, being a tourist destination, the government along with the localites should keep an eye on the sterility of the lakes as well as the surroundings.  They should actively participate in keeping the city clean. The lakes should be regularly cleaned and fogging should be done so as to prevent any mosquito breeding in the water. Trashes should be placed at a fixed distance for proper garbaging. Hoardings for no throwing of wastes in water should be put everywhere in the surroundings of water. Strict actions should be taken against the ones who throw anything in water.

Apart from the lakes, udaipies should try to keep the city green too as the natural beauty of Udaipur has depreciated a lot in the last few years due to the infrastructural development  of the city. Planting as much trees as possible in compensation to the trees cut down for other purposes is the best and the only way to save the natural beauty. Roads should be made wider and tree plantation should be done along their sides.

Also the transport system in Udaipur needs to be paid attention. Besides the train and air services, proper conveyance facilities in the city area itself should be provided for the betterment of the city.

These primary things if kept in mind and followed by every citizen of Udaipur would help a lot in aggravating the elegance and beauty of our city and will ultimately enhance tourism in Udaipur. So, go clean and green.

Well, start contributing your share from today and enjoy the charm, soup and beauty of Udaipur. Once again Happy World Tourism Day to everyone. 🙂

Ganesh Chaturthi 2012 – Ganpati Bappa Moriya!

“Vakratunda Mahaakaaya Suryakotee Sama Prabha,
Nirvighnam kuru mey Deva, Sarva kaaryeshu Sarvadaa”

Lord Ganesh, the elephant headed God, the son of Shiva and Parvati, invoked at every beginning and every start.

He is the god of Prosperity, Fortune and Wisdom and today is his day. He rides on his vehicle, a mouse, and is well known for fulfilling the wishes and desires of his devotees. Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganeshotsava aka ‘Vinayak Chaturthi’, is a great Ganesha festival. It is the spiritual and joyful journey of 10 days, which is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha in the Bhaadrapada month of Hindu Calendar.

Photo Courtesy : 500px.com (Rohan Pavgi)

This festival of Ganpati Bappa got major exposure by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja, the great Maratha ruler, who promoted this festival in order to promote culture and nationalism. Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, played a major role in its revival too; he promoted and encouraged Ganesh Chaturthi in order to spread the message of freedom struggle and to defy the Britishers who had banned public assemblies.  In addition to celebration across the whole country, it is marked as a full day celebration in the calendars of houses even outside India. The grandest festivity can be witnessed in the western state of Maharashtra where this ‘utsav’ lasts for 10 days, ending on the day of ‘Ananta Chaturdashi’.

This huge festival starts with the Pranpratishtha (installation) of beautifully designed and decorated idols of Ganesha, made of Plaster of Paris or clay, with chanting of mantras. The idols may vary in size, suitable for both, houses and community Pandals. The pandals are specially decorated for this festival. And for the next 10 days, there is a joyful sequence of Ganesh Vandana, Aarti and Puja, done both in morning and evening. The most popular sweet dish during this festival includes the modak (A dumpling prepared from rice or wheat flour stuffed with fresh or dry-grated coconut, jaggery, dry fruits and other condiments). These Modaks or Modakam are either steam-cooked or fried. Another popular sweet dish includes Karanji which is quite similar to the modak in taste but it has a semicircular shape.

On the 11th day, the Ganesh Murti is taken to a river, lake, sea or pond for submersion, amongst a huge crowd of merry people, singing, dancing and chanting all together; “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Agle Baras Tu Jaldi Aaa”. This event of utmost enthusiasm, merry making and bidding farewell to the Lord is called Visarjan, which is a symbol of Ganesh Ji taking all the sins, pain and mistakes of his devotees with him.

A day full of celebrations and festivity – Meethi Eid

sewaiyan

Men and women, boys and girls, all in happy colors, in a joyful mood, elders giving eidi to the youngers, market full of various kind of food and sweets, fragrance of sawaiyan from every kitchen, decorated houses, beautiful girls with beautiful mehandi and bangles in their hands, kids playing around merrily.

This is the picture perfect scene of today’s meethi eid. The day most awaited by all the Muslims.

There are two Eid in Islam religion; this is the first one, named Eid-al-Fitar, the festival of fast breaking. On the first day of Shawaal, the 10th month of Muslim calendar, this Eid is celebrated, following the religious month of Ramazan, which is the month of fasting; the holy Quran was reveled in this month. The entire month of fasting is celebrated as an achievement of every Muslim individual in the service of Allah. It is a way of giving thanks and to pay their gratitude to Allah. Muslims assembles at the Eidgah in a very brotherly and joyful manner. After the namaz, they wish each other, give eidi to their younger ones, go to their relatives place and then have the sweets altogether.

Among these celebrations, there is also a place for the deceased; people remember them by praying for their souls, they help the needy people by expressing their helps, show consolation to the grieved and sick.

Eid, means happiness and festivity, it should be celebrated beyond all the restrictions formed due to caste system, different religions and other social problems.  We all should celebrate this day in the same manner as we celebrate our own festivals, as these festive days are the days of pure happiness beyond restrictions.

Udaipurblog wishes a very Happy Eid to all of you.  🙂

One beautiful Thread to celebrate a beautiful Relation – Happy Rakhi

Photo Of Rakhi

Life blesses us with many relations – parents, grandparents, uncles, aunties, cousins and friends… But there is one beautiful relation in which you can find a lifetime friend, an all time enemy, a secret sharer, a counselor and a best care-taker; yes only a brother-sister relation can carry so many pearls of different shades tied together in a strong string of love and care.

And today is the day dedicated to this sweet n sour relation – RAKHI; a day to strengthen the bond shared between brother and sister while tying the knots of a thread round the wrist. Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi falls on the full moon day of the Shravan month of the Hindu calendar. Many mythological tales are narrated about how this tradition of tying Rakhi around the wrist of brothers started, the most famous of all being the story of Rani Karnawati, the widowed queen of emperor of Chittor, who sent a Rakhi to Emperor Humayun asking him safeguard her husband’s empire from Bahadur Shah. The responsibility behind the thread meant so much that Humayun fought with Bahadur Shah even after Rani Karnawati committed Jauhar and handed over the kingdom to Rani’s son.

Every year the festival returns so that we can relive the memories of our childhood with our siblings. The memories attached with this relation, though different for every person, yet carry the same essence of bonding and love. You will find the same cutest smile decorating your face everytime while narrating those craziest fights, those memorable Rakhis, those countless stories of play and fun you had in kindergarten and childhood; aren’t they the most priceless memories..??

It’s amazing how a person who fights with you on every silliest of thing will think of hundreds of excuses to save you from scolding of Dad; the one who never gets tired of teasing you can go wild with anger when someone else says a word against you. While threatening each other to reveal their secrets, we never know when we start sharing the details of our every minute, our secrets and our deepest fears with each other and then we become the best friends for life. There can be no one else who could know your each and every like and dislike, who could understand your wishes and dreams, and who could make all efforts to make you smile in between the tears.

So today go back to those golden days filled with those golden memories and relive those fights and fun with your siblings. Let your childhood take over your present. And while tying Rakhi, let’s promise each other silently that “No matter how many miles and countries come in between us, I will always be the first one to share your smile and your tears.”
