It is now well established that the quality of education can be improved considerably by proper use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), to supplement the conventional mode of education. Aakash tablets were launched by MHRD in October 2011. These are Low Cost Access cum- computing Devices. The National Mission on Education using ICT (NME-ICT) envisages that these tablets should be deployed for empowering our students and teachers.

Aakash Workhop | UdaipurBlog

Through this workshop, IIT Bombay plans to train participants on android application programming for Aakash tablets with two objectives. The first is to test and enhance the effectiveness of these tablets for use in classrooms. The second is development of new open source educational applications and contents for Aakash, largely through final year Research and Development projects done by BE/MCA/ME students.

Following topics will be covered in the workshop:

  • Android Apps Programming:
  • Getting Started with Android
  • Setting up Eclipse for Android Software Development
  • Android Building Blocks
  • Layouts and UI Control.
  • Android Application Resources.
  • Introduction to Animation and Graphics.
  • Data Storage.
  • Web Application Development.
  • Publishing your Application.

Since the workshop is funded by the National Mission on Education through ICT (MHRD, Government of India), there is no course fee for participation.

Piyush Javeria, Aakash Project Coordinator describes Aakash as an access device in which a Linux environment has been developed atop an Android operating system. Tailored compilers for C, C++, Python and Scilab are ported so that users can write and run programmes on the tablet, emphasizing its use as a full-fledged computer. Powered by a 1GHz processor and backed with a 512 MB RAM, Aakash 2 sports a 7″ capacitive screen, a USB port and micro SD card slot and promises a battery life of 3 hours for normal operations, running at core, the Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich).  He also added that 200 students of pre-final and final years of engineering have registered and are attending this workshop with great enthusiasm. They are getting chance to use Aakash tablet and deploy their own created apps on it. First day concluded with basics of Java and Android with development of simple android application development. Students can also participate in National Software Development Competition on AAKASH tablet  (http://aakashlabs.org/compete) and win prizes worth Rs 1 lac.

Are we really a REPUBLIC INDIA?

Republic means a country in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president. But sometimes I ask myself a question “Are we really Republic…?” The answer that comes is “NO”.

It’s said that government is for the people, by the people and of the people. But it doesn’t seem to me like this. If we would have been republic then our views won’t be overlooked, our voices won’t be tongue tied. This Republic Day I don’t feel like celebrating but mourning on our past activities.

Republic Day

Talking about the “Nirbhaya’s” case, it’s been more then a month and the culprits are not being punished. People say that it’s the fault of girls, just because of their outfits, but is it their fault that some “Idiots” can’t change their so called filthy mentality, its their they can’t control the beast in them. Can anyone one please tell me does a 3 yr old girl, or a 35 yr old housewife, or a 55 yr old aged women wear western clothes or is it the fault of the animal that can’t control himself. They say it takes two hands for a clap. I request these people please “Grow Up”, respect women instead of admonishing them, stating them guilty for everything, change your bloody mentality about them, and know their worth. Every person is given birth by a woman, whom he calls mother. I thought that may be after the Delhi case, we won’t hear of any rape cases but am sorry to say these mindless monsters haven’t stopped. Every day in newspapers we hear about these cases, but the bitter truth is that these culprits are not even punished, they easily get bailed. It’s even been said by the mother of one of the similar mishap victim that the police didn’t even registered their case, not until the pressure of media. Even after that, they were taking the culprits lightly. She mentioned in her statement that it was because the culprits has strong connections with the politicians. (TOI, 18th Jan. 2013)
Who the hell are we afraid of, representatives of our voice whom we have elected..? You tell me that by remaining silent are we giving justice to all those girls who have lost their lives, or who are still suffering, or who won’t be able to live a stable life. By not punishing the criminals rather let them roam free or enjoying their lives or making a family getting married. You tell me are we correct in this..? So I request you all, please take a stand. Now the time is for us “The Young Guns of India” to take a step change the laws, change the rules, change the people’s mentality, punish the culprits and give justice to women. And I think instead of just hanging the culprits they must be killed brutally, the same way they have destroyed lives of various girls and women.

I want to ask our government few questions: “Were you waiting for something like Nirbhaya’s case to happen to take some action against it..? What about all those girls who have suffered before it..? Was it a normal thing for you rather being an offence..? Why does it take too long for you to wake up?”

I am also ashamed on the way our government is treating Pakistan for the brutality they have shown since ages. They killed our soldiers, beheaded them, as well as firings and series of bombings in our country so far. And what we do is cancel our cricket matches with them, don’t allow them in the social meetings. Can’t we rather give them a proper “reply” the way they have treated us so far. They say that they hanged “Kasab”, but none of them who are self appreciating have noticed that he stayed in our country like a VIP, a celebrity for more than 4 years.

We are republic, but our country suffers from loopholes inside our own system. Why can’t we take a strong action against any external or internal brutality? Why can’t we just be a part of a cleaner democratic and republic India rather than living in a world of dirty politics, even when the people stand for a peaceful protest on roads, their own representatives issue orders to disperse the mob forcefully and brutally.

Please people, lets stand up for all the victims of Incredible India. Corruption is embedded in our system till depths. Its time for us now to take some action against all this, to make India worth calling “Mera Bharat Mahan”. And until that, even we are worthless. Let us not allow them to take advantage of our silence. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat!

P.S.: By this article if I have hurt anyone’s feelings, I am sorry for it. No offense, but these are my independent views about our Republic India.

Delhi rape case : A wake up call

Gang rape protest

This brutal and shocking incident has shaken the whole country from a long sleep. A 23 year old physiotherapy student was gang raped, beaten, tortured and then thrown on road in a well populated area of the capital city of India, Delhi. Delhi, where a female chief minister is ruling since many years & where females are considered most unsafe. But females are not safe in every part of India.

What was wrong? Why was she victimized? Because she was a girl, she was out at night (at just 9:00pm) or because she resisted the lewd comments of drunken male citizens of this country.

Students are on road, female organizations are on road, & those who are not there are also agonized & agitated. Everyone is demanding justice, but nobody knows when the justice will arrive? Well being of the girl & getting justice for her is the most important priority for today. But then what for tomorrow? Will justice in one case will solve the whole problem, this case is only the tip of iceberg.

We Indians can glorify females as Maa Durga, Maa Lakshmi & with many more titles, but we Indians cannot protect our female citizens. We instruct our daughters not to go out in night, not to go out alone, not to wear jeans, not to interact with males. Why??? Why there is need for so many instructions??? Yes, there is need because our society, our system has failed to provide protection to our females. This case has happened at night, tomorrow when it will happen in day light, we will ask our girls to wear burka. I hope most of the citizens will admit that this is not the solution.

The solution is better protection, better law & order management and quick justice. One more thing which is required, that is change in values in the society. This case shows failure of law & order, but it also shows failure of our society. We have to accept that we have failed to inculcate proper values in our youth. This is a wake up call not only for police & government, but also for our society. We need to teach are sons, brothers & male friends to respect females & to consider females as human beings. The gentle man walking next to a female should stand with her for justice. And this is required not only in rape cases, but also in every case of eve teasing, groping & other sexual harassments.

Let us hope that this wake-up call does not go wasted…

What is happening to our Udaipur students?

The noon of December 17 2012 brought the news which shocked the whole city.  The city of Lakes seemed turned into the Red City. Two groups from different college collapsed with each other and their thirst quenched with taking life of one of the student from Bhupal Noble’s College Jaipal Singh.

Photo via : UdaipurNews.in

If we really go into the deep to investigate the matter; the real cause of this serious incident would shock us one more time. A simple debate on a cultural event turned aggressive and finally had led to the bloodshed which took life of one of the student. So far the reasons of murder were mostly matter related to money, kidnap, land, robbery and sexual harassment etc. Such cause of murdering has added one more chapter in the queue which needs a serious exercise to be done.

Let us analyze the aftermath of the whole scenario and try to understand the whole story. What do you think? What would be going to happen next? Some of you might know very well. There would be a lot of aggression and agitation in the mass. Many students from college and hostels would get back to their home till the matter saturates. People and organizations would protest and they would demand for the compensation. Police and administration would fulfill their duties. After a certain time the matter would settle down. This is all what going to happen. Every citizen has respect for law and order and has sympathy for the student who lost his life. Similarly they are even burning from within and are eager to sentence all those who have committed this crime.

What for the next year? Yes, what is the plan for the next year? Life won’t stop for all of us. Colleges would reopen. Elections too would take place next year in college and universities. Cultural activities will also be organized and perhaps such incident might also get repeated in the coming year. Are we really ready for it?

It is a question for all of us. The cultural programs, activities and functions in colleges and universities are the events where students from various institutions gather at one place. At times this provokes them to race with each other. Groups are formed, agitation rotates, a plot is generated, and finally it reaches to the climax and we face a horrible dead end. This might happen in the next year’s program too. Friends, now the time has come to think and act so that we can stop such useless mishaps before it starts. What things can we do? This is a big question.

Well preparation and educating students is the only one important medium which can save such accidents. There are lots of things which can be planned and implemented at the time of activities when students gather. Some of them we can summarize.

  • All colleges and hostel should be scrutinized and a thorough checking should be performed for weapons or any illegal material.
  • Places where these programs are organized should be kept fool proof with tightened security. Usually this is avoided.
  • All cultural activities should be kept under surveillance.
  • Among students; groups should be formed from various colleges and universities who could help to manage proper security and other necessary arrangements. This could be done by taking their voluntary service.
  • If required additional security could be enforced.
  • Help of police and local administration should also be enhanced during such activities.
  • A normal debate or aggression should be taken care seriously. Students involved in such debate should be kept under strong monitoring.
  • A better plan should be made to manage the whole list of activities and proper responsibilities should be delegated so that such situations could be avoided. College and University administration’s strong participation needs to be involved in delegation.
  • Above all what is felt is there is a need to study or survey the trend – why our students are becoming so violent? What is the psychology which is playing behind the scene? Students taking admissions into college to complete their academic carrier are turning into a killer or murderer. This factor needs to be studied very deeply.

Although all these things which are covered would certainly require more finance to manage the event. But, it would definitely cost less than the life of an innocent student.

IIM Udaipur launches “Campus Connect” – A Social initiative

IIM Udaipur

Contrary to just thinking about case studies, calculating the return on investment and thinking about landing high-paying corporate jobs, IIM Udaipur students took the initiative to provide career guidance to local students, mainly from government schools. The students of class 9 and class 10, of Shikshaniketan high school were invited to the IIM campus, to spend a day and understand life in an IIM.

The program, “Campus Connect”, was organized by Prayatna, the social club of IIM Udaipur. The program was intended to inspire students and guide them to take careers which would really interest them. The purpose of the program was to motivate them to not give up their dreams and put in sincere and honest efforts to achieve.

The program began with an introductory session for the students. Each student was first asked to come onto the stage and speak about his/her self and his/her aspirations, for 2 minutes. The intention was to build confidence and break the initial ice. Most of the students came up with bright aspirations; one of them wanted to become an engineer, another, doctor, a few wanted to join the Indian Army and some wanted to get into the Civil Services.

The IIM students began their presentation about career options that were available after they completed their class 10. The presentation clearly explained the various paths which would lead them to their goal.

The session also included motivational snippets from the biography of our former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. His life history, highlighting the hard work and obstacles he had to face, to reach the pinnacle of success, was shared with the young minds to motivate them to think “BIG”.

IIM Udaipur – Creating tomorrow’s Leaders: The students were also explained about an MBA and life in an IIM. They were told that IIMs are the premier institutes in India which train young graduates to become efficient managers. The children were shown various motivational videos, like the success story of Govind Jaiswal – a rickshaw puller’s son, who secured All India Rank 48 in Civil Service Exam in 2006.

Then the students proceeded to participate in personality development games. The games subjected them to various situations which they might face in their daily lives. These games taught them the importance of team dynamics, especially in the world after school.

Personal Mentorship: The students of IIM Udaipur want this initiative to be fruitful, so each school student has been assigned an IIM-U Student as their mentor. They would remain in constant touch with the school students and guide them in their career in the years to come.

Prof. Shah interacting with the students

Dr. Janat Shah-The Director of IIM Udaipur expressed his happiness at such an innovative initiative, by the students of IIM Udaipur. He said “We are extremely grateful to Udaipur which has given us immense support in establishing IIM in Udaipur. We are always committed to nation building and this initiative by my students is just a step towards contributing for the wellbeing and development of Udaipur”. He advised the students to work harder in life and never give up until the goal was achieved.

The students of IIM Udaipur expressed their happiness and promised to extend this personal mentorship to many other students in and around Udaipur, to guide them in their careers and help them Dream BIG!!!

Having Fever..?? CAUTION – It Can be Dengue!

Understanding Dengue :

Dengue!! The name itself scares us to death. Is this fear justified? Unfortunately to some extent yes. It manifests as simple fever but progress to hemorrhagic fever with shock which maybe lethal if not treated on time. The disease is transmitted by bite of Aedes mosquito and is caused by an Arbovirus. Usually viral infection causes lifelong immunity to the host, but this virus has four subtypes plus subsequent infections only worsen the risk of complication. This is of importance to us as India being an endemic nation people is prone to repeated attacks.

Dengue Symptoms :

The symptom includes fever, bodyache, and skin rash. The body ache is severe and hence it is called break bone fever. There are three manifestation Classical dengue, Hemorrhagic fever without shock and Hemorrhagic fever with shock. Only the last form is lethal as it causes low platelet levels resulting in bleeding and decreased blood pressure. The treatment of dengue is supportive. It includes fluids, either oral or intravenous, and Paracetamol. In case of shock blood transfusion is required. If the patient has any concomitant illness it can cause complications and death.

Dengue Transmission :

The transmission cycle is man-mosquito-man; hence it is cardinal that patients are kept under mosquito net unless fever is controlled. Since we are yet to have a vaccine to prevent dengue or a medicine that is directed at the virus it is imperative that we take measures to control the disease. Every individual must take steps to protect himself, the family members and the community members. Simple measures like emptying water from stagnant cans and coolers will curtail the breeding sites of mosquito. For personal protection one must wear long pants and sleeves. Use of mosquito repellants, sprays and ointments is also helpful. One important fact to note regarding dengue is that mosquito bites during day, especially at dawn and dusk, hence avoiding outdoors during these hours is a simple protective measure.

Every fever is not dengue and every dengue patient will not die, but still fever with severe body ache and rash has to be investigated by a doctor to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. We recently lost the ‘The King of romance’ Mr. Yash Chopra to dengue. Probably we can show some love to our loved ones by sharing information about dengue.

So protect yourself and the community from Dengue and enjoy these winters to the fullest…. Happy Winters…!!! 🙂
