The Biker Diaries – A Trip To Leh

Udaipur is not merely a city of lakes or a tourist destination, there is a much larger part of Udaipur than what meets the eye. With the continuous exposure, strive for achieving an extra edge and increased hunger for adventure and fun has led the udaipurites to challenge many odds.

Following is the story by Ankesh Sharma, a biker and definitely an adventure lover.

Motor biking to Leh is the dream of every biker. We were planning for this since last year and this year when I and my brother decided to make our dream come true. We departed for Manali on July 17, 2012 and dived into the universe of adventures. It was Royal Enfield 350 cc Machismo motorbike that we were riding.

The beauty of Rohtang Pass was not less than that of heaven. The snow covered mountains and waterfalls made us feel we were in Heaven. The Drive up till Leh does require a lot of preparation but the worst part on our side was that we were without any preparation.

The first stop was made at Keylong which was 120 kilometers ahead of Manali. After that we stopped at Sarchu and we got our petrol tanks filled at a station called Thandi that came before Keylong as there was no filling station till Leh. It was a No Network area too.

Sarchu was a place that was on the border of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Here we had to get registered-in by the police. It was cold in Sarchu and the next day we started early since we had to cover up to Leh. The way from Sarchu till Leh was very beautiful and we came across the unseen beauty of nature.

Sometimes we drove with a river, sometimes crossed snow covered mountains and sometimes sandstone formations of Kangla Jal. Driving on the 21 loops of Ghata loops was also fascinating. This was how we reached up to Pong which is the highest army transit camp of the world. After Pong as we drove upwards we came across more plains (this was at the altitude of 17,000 feet above the sea level). It was very difficult to drive on this road because of low oxygen level and poor roads. Many times we had to go off road.

Then came Tanglang La which is the world’s second highest motor able pass and while coming down from there we got our motorbike’s tyre flattered. Fortunately we met some bikers who helped us in getting the tyre tube changed and finally we reached Leh the same day.

The following day we visited the landmarks of Leh namely Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Namgyal Tsemo Gompa followed by the visits to Magnetic Hill, Sangam and Hall of Fame the next day.

(Just for the record : Every tourist requires a permit to visit Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake. Permit can be made at the DC office of Leh.)

The third day we came across  the world’s highest motor able pass called Khardung La Pass and also visited the monastery of Diskit and the sand dunes of Hunder, riding on sand dunes in middle of snow covered mountains was a good experience.

We thought of returning back to Leh on the same day but the drivers are strictly recommended not to drive before 7am and after 5pm because roads may block anytime and you don’t get help. So today the night stay was made at Diskit only.

The next morning we left for Leh. The very same day we decided to drive towards Manali and decided to reach Rumtsey, which is a town located 80 Kilometers before Leh. We halted at a town called Lato. We stayed at a rented room, (rented to us by a local family). Walls made of mud, wooden roof and floor covered with carpet. On top of that there was no electricity and we had dinner in candlelight. The house was on the bank of river Indus. It was like a night of fairy tales.

The next day we halted at Sarchu and there the bike broke down. Flattered Tyres, broken clutch wire and shock absorber. Fortunately we met a truck driver from Rajasthan who helped us in carrying the bike till Manali.

Biking to Leh is a good experience for those who prioritize adventures. However Poor road connectivity and unavailability of proper medical facility makes this tour little bit risky. Also the charges charged by the localities for the services provided by them were very annoying.

In the nutshell I will conclude that motor biking to Leh is a must go for adventure lovers but for tourists, I will say a big NO.

Child Labour Age Limit Raised to 18 Years

The Rajasthan government, in a significant decision, has recognised the age of child labourers as 18 years and announced a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Identification, Rescue, Protection and Rehabilitation for children employed in different occupations.Besides the local children, a large number of child labourers from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Delhi and West Bengal are working under difficult circumstances in Rajasthan.

The State’s Department of Social Justice and Empowerment has issued a notification on August 21 clarifying the subject of Child Labour will henceforth be dealt with under the provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000, and laying down an SOP for all departments concerned for handling the issue of child labour. Moreover, the children who are involved in beggary would be identified by the NGOs and they will be admitted to residential schools, where the District Administration would make arrangements for food and accommodation for them.

In a far-reaching decision, the Rajasthan government has announced that a person below 18 years will be considered as a child labourer if he or she is employed. The Government’s six-page notification has made some important observations about the prevalence of labour by kids below 18 years. It says a large number of below-18 years children were employed in occupations like Gem Polishing, Carpet Manufacturing, Brick Kilns, Domestic Work, Begging, Bidi Industry, Mines, Agriculture, Tea Kiosks, Dhabas among others and a large number were being trafficked out of state for labour at Beet Cotton Fields, where they work as bonded labourers for 10 to 16 hours a day.

It said though the Child Labour Prohibition Act, 1986, is in force in state, it treats the work by children below 14 years in certain occupations as valid and does not facilitate rehabilitation of rescued kids. In this backdrop, the notification has held the Juvenile Justice Act, which defines a child’s age as 18 years, as the basis for taking action against child labour.

The notification has directed the labour department to conduct raids with the help of police to rescue child labourers above 14 years of age. The children will be brought before the child welfare committee and a fine of Rs. 20,000 will be imposed on the employer. The state government will contribute Rs. 5,000 for each child in the child labour welfare fund, which would be spent on his or her rehabilitation. Both chief secretary CK Mathew and additional CS Aditi Mehta of Social Justice Empowerment have signed the notification.

Project Inspire – Vote for Women’s Personal Private Marketplace

Over 60% of the women in India do not use personal hygiene products like sanitary napkins and an equal number are not aware of simple birth control methods (like condoms, birth control pills etc.). Boond Foundation while working in villages of Rajasthan and UP encountered this problem first hand and we resolved to do something about this. Over the past two years, Boond Foundation has built expertise in rural marketing and distribution to facilitate access to products that would bring about considerable amount of socio economic progress in the region. Primarily working in the area of renewable energy like solar power, the foundation also aims to expand its activities to include empowerment of rural women.

In order to solve this personal hygiene problem, the foundation decided to utilize technology and women entrepreneurs. We realized that the reason for the low adoption of products like sanitary napkins etc. was not only due to the low awareness levels but also because the women were hesitant to go to the local markets to buy these kinds of products as the shopkeepers were often men. We conducted an extensive review of technologies available and found that a mobile app would contribute in a huge way towards this empowerment. After the review, we embarked on an initiative titled ‘Women’s Personal Private Marketplace’ on a mobile phone. The initiative aims towards educating and providing access to women in rural communities with basic hygienic products that will help ward off many diseases / infections that they normally encounter with.  Since the medium of marketing will be mobile phones, it will ensure a very high penetration and also be discreet. Specific needs and wants related to their health will be prioritized in the design of the application. With this model and business plan, Boond competed in the Nokia Global Women’s Business Plan competition and won the top spot with fund support from Nokia to develop the application. We have also partnered with a renowned NGO from Canada – Decode Global; a pioneer of mobile apps for social change.

Additionally, this initiative has also been selected for the final of the ‘Project Inspire’ competition (http://www.facebook.com/ProjInspire) being run by UN Women and MasterCard organization. The winners will be decided on the basis of public votes. The winner will be awarded with the ‘People’s Choice Award’. To know more about Boond Foundation, check out www.boondfoundation.org or email info@boond.net or udaipur@boond.net
