देव उत्थापनि एकादशी

dev jhulni ekadashi

Navratri : The Nine Nights

Navratri 2013

India is a land of festivals. Every now and then, every month and even seen deeply then Indians celebrates some or other festival every day. Out of these many festivals “NAVRATRI”  is a huge festival and one of the longest celebrated festivals in India. This festival is dedicated to worship the Hindu deity ‘Goddess Durga’.

Navratri literally means ‘nine-nights’. The festival of navratri is celebrated for nine days/nights and tenth day is celebrated as ‘Vijayadashami ‘ or ‘Dussehra’, famous for the day when Lord Ram killed Ravana. All these nine days are celebrated worshipping all the forms of Shakti or Devi or avatar of goddess Durga. Two types of navratri are celebrated in India. One is Vasanta navratri and other is Sharad navratri. Vasant navratri is celebrated at the beginning of the summer season or one may say at the end of spring season. Sharad navratri is celebrated at beginning of the winters.

This festival is mainly celebrated in Northern India. It is a main festival of the Indian state Gujarat but is equally celebrated in whole of northern India including mainly Rajasthan, Delhi, etc.

The Navratri commences on the first day of bright fortnight of the lunar month ashwin. This festival is mainly celebrated in the month of October. This festival is celebrated by fasting for all nine days by the devotees in the devotion of goddess Durga. An idol of goddess Durga is established with all rituals and the social rites on the first day of navratri also known as ‘Navratri Sthapna’.

Nine forms of Shakti are worshipped during these days of navratri as per the trends and traditions of the different regions. These are as follows:

  • Durga
  • Bhadrakali
  • Amba or Jagadamba, Mother of the universe
  • Annapoorna devi,
  • Sarvamangala,
  • Bhairavi
  • Chandika or Chandi
  • Lalita
  • Bhavani
  • Mookambika

NAVRATRI CELEBRATIONS IN UDAIPUR:

The City of Lakes celebrates every festival and every occasion with a basket full of enthusiasm and devotion. In every corner of the city it is celebrated in a different way. But one thing common is “GARBA”. Garba is a traditional dance of Gujarat which is usually carried out during the festival of navratri. In every area and every street of city huge Pandals are decorated with the establishment of the idol of Goddess Durga and Garba/Dandiya is played for next nine days.

One of the biggest platforms during navratri and the biggest idol of goddess Durga are established in Sutharwada. Many devotees from all over the city reach there to take a glimpse of the grand decoration and the breathtaking celebrations of navratri. In these nine days devotees go and visit various temples throughout the city mainly Neemach Mata, Ambamata, Bedla Mata, Karni Mata, Kalka Mata etc. Temples of high devotion like Asawara Mata, Untala mata(vallabhnagar), Idana Mata, Barwasan Mata, Jhankla Mata etc which are out of city are also visited by devotees in huge numbers.

The bengali community celebrates the “Durga Pooja” as their primary festival throughout the year and their celebrations start on the 6th day of Navratri, which continues till the end of Dusshera. In Udaipur, there are various locations where Durga Pooja is celebrated by the Bengali Communities

There are many private firms and many self organized organizations which sponsor as well as conduct Garba at huge scale. Couples, senior citizens, children, and people of all age groups enjoy these nine days and on the ninth day with the dispersal of the idols pray for the next navratri and stay awaited.

Do Uniforms make Schools better? Schools Turns out to Be Expensive for Parents’ Pockets

cps imposing kids to buy these shoes

School is the foremost stair of every child’s life to penetrate into this world. Schools facilitate them to learn and to get educated. Parents prefer to admit their child into the best school of their possible ways. But, nowadays there is a lot of competition in the education line. They play various tricks to make out their school quiet poles apart from the other ones. In the race of these, they deploy surplus compulsions on the students. And this load directly or indirectly reaches to the parents.

Schools desire to make available each and every competence which other school is having, so they lift up the monthly fee. They are referring numerous expensive books other than NCERT books recommended by government just to demonstrate that they are providing astonishing schooling. Junior classes are more exaggerated by the problems of expensive books. Students are required to use the Notebooks of the School-Prints only, which are also expensive than the usual notebooks existing in the market.

Now, the main question arises. What about Uniform? Do Uniforms make schools better? Better teaching can do, not the uniform. Schools are forcing students to purchase the uniform at pocket tearing prices. For a Uniform we just think of shirts, pants/skirts, tie, belt and shoes. But, we can see that, in the cost of shoes, we can purchase all other elements of uniform.

One more innovation in this field is made by one of the renowned school of Udaipur – Central Public School to grasp some extra cream from parents. They are providing a shoe pair, which is available only with Adidas. No supplementary brand can be chosen. And for the growing foot, expenditure of 1500/- to 2000/- is not a good choice to make for a middle class family. Although, keeping the price apart, we focus on the thing that what they are teaching the kids about the dress code. We all know that according to the normal formal dress up, with the combo of Shirt-Pant-Tie-Belt, leather shoes are the best match. There is no place for sportswear. Just look at the way they are taking advantages of parents. They are having the counter outlets in the schools only saying that they are available at some discounts, but no one can believe; they are actually giving discounts or they are filling their own pockets. God knows.

Schools have now become ‘Money Making’ rather than ‘Mind Making’. They are earning a good secondary income with all these. But, we also know, Uniforms can’t make the school better or can’t affect child’s academics. They have lost the essence of teaching and moving towards showing off. They are putting more emphasis on these unwanted expensive compulsions rather than imparting good quality education. For good quality education, Parents are ready to pay more if money is for some new education technology/task. But, education is no more prior now. In this expensive world, it is one of the horrible situations.

A Tourist Guide to Jagdish Mandir

One of the most popular temple of the City of Lakes, Jagdish Mandir was built by Maharaja Jagat Singh in 1651. From then, it has been a great place of attraction for the tourists as well as the localities. It is well furnished with marble floors all over the premises. It is built in the great Indo-Aryan Architectural style. The idol room is easily accessible with well constructed 32 steps leading directly from road to the adobe of Lord Jagdish. Moreover it’s a centre for people’s inspirational homage.

jagannath rath yatra

It is only one of it’s kind. If considered on typographical and geographical status it it well situated on high altitude. The miniature carvings on the walls as well as inside the premises can leave any spectator spellbound. The chowk just outside the temple, also known as Jagdish Chowk has always been a place of keen interest and attractions for tourist.

It also hosts the Rath Yatra, which can be considered as Carnival of India. In this festival Lord Jagdish is taken around the city in a Silver Chariot especially made for the occasion. A huge lot of skilled workers assemble the parts of chariot and joins them before the Yatra. Rath Yatra is basically a festival of Orissa. It is well celebrated in the city of Lord Jagdish, Puri. The Rath or Chariot of the lord is pulled by many die hard devotees of the city on shoulders. It takes almost 8 hours for the devotees to complete this journey from Jagdish Mandir to Jagdish Madir again encircling whole city.

jagdish mandir udaipur

The Lane Of God:

The lane of God as the title has God in it, in the same way lord Jagannath or Lord Jagdish resides in the heart of Udaipurites. The temple is situated on the top of the Jagdish Chowk. Underneath it lies a whole world of faith, devotion and unbreakable trust. From the foothills of the temple runs a series of streets, so small in area that it becomes difficult for a four wheeler to pass by, yet so large that the best of Udaipur, almost one fourth of population and the traditional coefficient lies there.

The streets may be very narrow geographically but are very broad emotionally. And above all on the top of these streets is a temple, which acts as a father to these streers. There had not been many magics or miracles by Lord Jagdish, but as it is said ‘ Kingship requires no Kingship’, in the same way Lord Jagdish don’t require any evidence of miracle to proove his kingship. People’s faith is very much enough. Udaipur is a city gifted with many temples but this temple has got its own significance, as it is the most special one in people’s as well as city’s heart. Not only people of the city are blessed with blessings of Lord Jagdish, but evey article, every artefact, every monument in the shops along this lane of god has had glimpse of god in them. When a person visits this temple, his heart is filled with silence, this silence is not of words but of mind, silence of mind. Such is the reign of Lord Jagdish.

jagdish mandir udaipur rajasthanPlaces Nearby Temple:

Adjacent to the temple lies a big market in small streets. In this market lies the true essence of Udaipur. The Miniature Art Paintings, Rajasthani Dresses, Traditional Hookahs and many other merchandises that can make anyone a toothless tiger. Any person can be flawed by the flawless work done by the craftsmen. This very market and these streets are rinsed with love, care and affection of the localites. The area also serves as a place for many roof-top restaurants, havelis, traditional hotels and motels, ghats and many more places of interests.

The famous ghat of Udaipur, Gangaur Ghat is barely 100 metres away from the temple. The Royal City Palace of Udaipur is at distance of stretched hand. In short this temple is good house to be on. 🙂

But still one thing which is worth noticing is that the artisans and craftsmen who shape the cultural India are living in misery.

But now a team of young entrepreneurs, Lokendra Ranawat, Virendra Ranawat and Sandeep Gaur from “Shilp Mantra” is on a mission to make these products get a distinct identity, and wants to create a globally recognized brand of handcrafted products.

shilp mantra udaipur

ShilpMantra.com” is a premium online handicraft product store, an art repository  that facilitate the art connoisseurs access to the finest handcrafted products of India. The startup was born with a vision to nurture the artisans and protect the art forms for the future generations while making the products available at reasonable prices. Through Shilp Mantra, we are showcasing the most fascinating & amazing traditional Indian handicrafts to the world at large which include sculptures, statues, paintings, home decor items, accessories, jewellery, gifts and a lot more from the ethnic handicraft industry.

The Back Story

Our trip to the creative ambience of handicrafts began 6 months ago when a bunch of friends were exchanging views about the unique Indian art & craft loved by people all over the world and the crave people have for these artefacts. This idea spurred us and aroused the passion in us to commence Shilp Mantra. So the team thought of providing an online medium to the masses who want to set up the Indian handicrafts as a classy style statement for themselves.

Minds Behind “Shilp Mantra”

Lokendra Ranawat, Virendra Ranawat and Sandeep Gaur

Shilp Mantra was launched on 15th of May by Lokendra Ranawat, Virendra Ranawat and Sandeep Gaur. Lokendra is an engineering graduate with Masters in International business & marketing. Worked in sales and marketing departments of large multinational companies in India &the UK, he holds strong skills in the field of international sales and business exposure. His passion towards the web and Indian handicraft culture did not let him settle in a corporate world. He eventually moved out to plan and channelized the venture supporting handicrafts in urban India and other parts of the world. Lokendra looks after all strategic directions and business growth at Shilp Mantra.

Virendra is a co-founder and one of the key members of the startup. This mechanical engineer with an MBA in International business has extensive experience of 7 years working with large multinationals across the globe. He looks after all corporate operations and has been very instrumental in the growth & development of Shilp Mantra.

Sandeep is another strong pillar & a co-founder of the venture. He has in-depth knowledge and expertise of web, Search Engine Optimisation & Social Media Marketing etc. he has worked with some of the best digital marketing companies and has more than 7 years of experience in online marketing. He is very enthusiastic about technology and thus dedicatedly contributes to Shilp Mantra.

Lokendra feels that their exclusiveness lies in their aesthetic and good quality products. These products are not readily available in offline market and thus give Shilp Mantra an edge over competition. He adds: “We have collaboration with NGOs/artisans/manufacturers/designers and hence maintain uniqueness in our products. “

To launch Shilp Mantra was not as easy as it seemed, creating & managing a startup in India has its own challenges and the biggest issue for Shilp Mantra was in sourcing their products. We conferred with manufacturers, artisans, craftsmen and all those who shape elegant handcrafted masterpieces to ally with us. Virendra shares:  “Sourcing does pose a challenge as majority of the core artisans/manufacturers are located in remote places where there is no internet facility but we are glad that a large number of people joined us in rejuvenating the jewels of India and exhibiting them worldwide.

Shilp Mantra is thriving to the path to success backed by innovative, creative & dynamic minds who love & admire Indian handicrafts and who want to spread the glory throughout the world. At Shilp Mantra, we are a team of 50 people, providing nurtured environment for individuals, strong motivational strategies & working dedicatedly to promote the Indian handicrafts.

Be in shape is the new fashion: 7 Days Plan for FLAT Tummy

Exclusive diet plan to help you shape up this summer Udaipur

The below diet plan can help you lose all the unwanted flab. The diet involves cutting out ‘toxic’ foods that encourage the body to store fat – including alcohol, sugar and processed foods.

Diet works on the principle that your body’s natural state is lean and fit, not sluggish and fat. But processed foods and drinks and excess sugar pollute the body, causing fat to cling to the hips, thighs, bum and tummy. However, as soon as you stop doing the wrong thing, your body responds very quickly, and you’ll get lean fast. But you have to believe you can do it. It doesn’t matter how often you have failed in the past. What matters now is focusing on what you want and taking action.

7 days for flat tummy

Food rules make these changes to your diet to lose weight and get a flat tummy fast!

  • Cut the C.R.A.P: Avoid the four main food groups that cause fat to cling to our bodies: caffeine, refined sugar, alcohol and processed foods.
  • But allow yourself a weekly cheat meal. Once a week, enjoy an indulgent meal of whatever you fancy, from creamy pasta to a slice of chocolate cake with cream. As ong as you’re eating clean, healthy food the rest of the time, an occasional high-fat treat actually speeds up your metabolism.
  • Take fish oil supplements: They burn fat and supply essential fatty acids.
  • Always have breakfast: Eat within one hour of waking up. If you don’t have time for a proper breakfast, just grab a piece of fruit and a few nuts.
  • Don’t eat after 8pm: Eating a large meal in the evening when your body is slowing down or sleeping is a bad idea for your digestion and weight.

{Part 2} Let’s Admit it… Udaipur

With the Successful list of Compilation in the last Article : Lets Admit it Udaipur, Here I have framed a new list of 15 Things we all might Admit that we did them 😉 Share your comments if you feel the same.

  1. At least once, we all have counted the network towers or the black water tanks from our rooftops.
  2. It always scares us when ‘108’ is running just behind us.
  3. When we are near to any choraha our eyes are more on the traffic lights than on the roads, so as to increase or decrease the speed according to the seconds left in changing of the lights.
  4. Though we have PVR and INOX in our city but still we all miss our very own Chetak Cinema.
  5. We all have this habit of calculating gross and net income of famous ‘Thelawalas’ of our city and this happens while enjoying the edibles offered by them.
  6.  In case a traffic policeman is present at any signal, even if he is not checking for anything, but still we try to hide our vehicle by halting it beside an auto or a van so that he could not see us.
  7. We call it ‘The Sunset Point’ but no one has ever been there for the view of sunset.
  8. Once at the top of Sajjangarh, we try to look for our residence first though everyone knows that it is not possible.
  9. Also at Sajjangarh, there is a staircase somewhere at the bottom but no one has ever got down from that staircase because after 4 to 5 stairs it becomes completely dark. Even the torch and flashlight does not work over there.
  10. In Udaipur, people waiting in second or third queue at traffic signals are actually more attentive in observing the traffic light as compared to those who are waiting in front.
  11. Even though we have KFC, Mc Donald’s and other food brands in our city but having something at sukhadiya circle is altogether a marvelous experience.
  12. At crossword bookstore, people of every age get attracted more towards the stationery and toys section rather than the book section.
  13. When deciding a place to sit at Fatehsagar’s paal we generally cross the whole paal in the search of a place.
  14. No one has ever seen the navy boats, tied at FS, in action.
  15. And finally lets admit it Udaipur..our city is Beautiful.

lets admit it udaipur

Sculpture Symposium leaves behind International Masterpieces to be erected in the city of Udaipur

international monumental symposium

Monumental Sculptures are fascinating to watch. They not only provide a city with elegance and grandeur, they help define it. Inspirational and overbearing, these structures tell you a lot about a place and its people. Well it takes great efforts and determination to carve them in the first place. And to see more than a dozen of them crafted at the same time is surely an experience of a lifetime.

The First International Monumental Sculpture Symposium concluded last week in Udaipur. The ideal venue for it was the cultural village of Shilpgram where 21 artists from across the country and the world came together to exhibit their craftsmanship. This post is dedicated to the fabulous masterpieces that they left behind.

Bringing in their signature styles to their work, the artists who participated in the symposium had to deal with the Udaipur climate for a month to finish their works. The April heat and the windy showers that slightly jeopardized the ceremony at the end.  Now that the sculptures are ready, they wait for their installation at different locations of the city. So even though you might not have visited the symposium, be prepared to see the sculptures as landmarks in the city of Udaipur.

This giant effort has been successful because of Bhupesh Kavadia, a sculpture artist himself, who put together the idea of the symposium. I wish that this legacy continues in the future as the city of Udaipur offers the perfect setting and material for this kind of event.

However I might have one complain to make. The symposium went on for a month. I visited it for more than a couple of times to catch the sculptures in different stages of creation and to talk to the artists but I hardly found any visitors arriving on their own interest. The people of the city will have to appreciate more and take higher interests to make such events successful. Afterall this effort is incomplete without everyone’s participation.

Here is a compilation of works from the symposium: Video Link Here
