Are you a sweet tooth? Let us take you to a very famous sweet shop in Udaipur-

Lala Mishthan Bhandar

Source: Taste of City

Lala Mishthan Bhandar was started by ‘Lala Narayan Ji’ somewhere 150 years ago. Apparently, the shop has been named after him. Located near the Ghanta Ghar police station, this shop is ever crowded by people who come here to relish the authentic taste of seasonal desserts and sweets and undoubtedly the sweets are mouthwatering.

We had a very interesting conversation with Mr. Hemendra Sahu who told us about the shop. He said that Lala Ji was his grandfather. He lived for an astonishing 103 years. It is getting operated from several years ago and quite evidently it has seen the golden era of kings and queens in Udaipur. Today, this sweet shop is witnessing its fourth generation.

Must try things to try at Lala Misthan Bhandar

Gulab Jamun

Preparation of Gulab Jamun

Gulab Jamun at this place is one of the best things you’ll taste in the city. They are a delight!

Rot, Panjeeri and other types of ‘Prasad’ (offerings to God)

Jaggery Rot

Rot (रोट) is a thick chapati made up of rough wheat flour. It is fried in ‘Ghee’ and topped up with Jaggery (Gur) and hot ‘Ghee’.

This Rot is prepared every Tuesday as an offering to Lord Hanuman. People from all around the city come and buy it to offer at Lord Hanuman’s temple situated at different places in the town. It is later shared among the devotees in the form of ‘Prasad’. One cannot find this special ‘Rot’ at any other shop except ‘Lala Mishthan Bhandar’.

Not only this, they make prasad for various occasions too, like ‘Panjeeri’ is made as an offering to the Lord.

If you still haven’t visited this amazing place, it’s just the right time!

An Interesting Conversation with the Founder of ‘Preparation For Career’ Meenakshi Bherwani Jotwani

On 23rd September 2018, PFC – Preparation For Career which is run by Meenakshi Bherwani Jotwani, celebrated the successful completion of a month. On this occasion, we had a very interesting conversation with Ms. Meenakshi about her journey. Read along to know about it.

Tell us about yourself and what do you do?

I am a Chartered Accountant, Company Secretary, Information Systems Auditor, and India Rank holder (in my professional degrees, 2nd rank all India level in CS and all India 20th Merit in CA)

After completing my education, I worked with various Multinational companies in UAE like British Petroleum, Reedhycalog, Royal group etc. I shifted back to Udaipur and for the last 7 years, I have been working in education Industry.

Tell us about your institute?

PFC, an institute which offers degrees like ACCA – Global CA, Graduation from Oxford Brookes, a Masters from London University, CAT, DIPLOMA IN IFRS etc. Different students have different aptitudes and we offer courses on the basis of their aptitudes.

What has your journey been like?

I started teaching at an institute when I was 17 years old, my first batch was of CPT students were a few months younger to me. I was pursuing CA-Intermediate at that time. Thereafter, my corporate work experience in UAE taught me a lot about the way an education system should be, my interest in this field made me interact with people of different nationalities, different backgrounds, and different qualifications. I started conducting workshops on Mnemonic techniques (a technique which enhances your memory power), taken various seminars as a career counselor and motivational speaker.

And my interactions with students, educationalist of different nationalist made me realize that education should be Practical, Job Oriented and conceptual.

What is the current scenario of education especially the commerce stream?

Commerce in our city is viewed as a stream which has a limited number of options but on the contrary, it is actually a stream which has an amazing number of options, which are popular and available in metro cities.

The traditional options being taught by traditional methods might help students get good grades but not be sufficient for them to survive in the current job market. We need to pay more stress on practical training and we need to understand that not all students will have the aptitude/interest to become CA/CS/MBA.

How is your institute different from the rest in Udaipur? What do think makes it different?

I strongly believe that bookish knowledge will help a student get a degree and practical knowledge will help him/her fetch a Great Job, hence education at PFC is a blend of both book as well as practical knowledge. We have a technical skill room for the same where we provide our students with technical training.

Fridays: quiz and quick revision days

Saturdays: test and motivational session days where we had 100% attendance in these sessions and students of other institutes have also been attending the motivational seminars and sessions on a regular basis.

There is also a Creative Wall for the students at PFC, the idea behind the same is that number of thoughts run into our mind on a daily basis, few people jot them down while the majority tend to ignore. Over the time the wall has made us realize that all students are deep thinkers, have a creative mind, all they need is a little support and guidance to develop this into an analytical brain

Regular skill development training is conducted, which will ensure that they bag great placements after completing their education.

What are accolades or facilitation you have received up till now?

As a tutor, in past years I have been Awarded as the best faculty from

  • Times of India
  • Dainik Bhaskar
  • Rajasthan Patrika
  • Rukmani foundation
  • FINPLAN INDIA
  • Big FM
  • NAMO Vichaar Manch

In ACCA Global C, 6 students in my subject scored international merits and 2 bagged 5th world rank with 96% marks in my subject due to which I was felicitated as the best tutor by Lucia Martin, ACCA Asia Head, by Meriaki Award.

I strongly believe that credit for these awards goes to my students as in CA-CPT- Law 8 of my students scored 100% marks in law. More than 50 students have scored exemptions in CA/ CS LAW. I cannot thank them enough for sincerely following the instructions/strategies advised to them in class.

What are the different career choices a commerce student can make?

At PFC we offer unconventional courses to students like:

ACCA – Global CA, ACCA is an expert in IFRS (International financial reporting standards) and all Multinational companies maintain their accounts AS PER IFRS SYTEM and thus need ACCA’s to take care of their accounts department

ACCA’s have to Job opportunities in 182 countries including India.

Other than that, we also provide other courses like:

*Graduation from Oxford Brookes University

*Masters from London University

*GAT – Global Accounting Technician

*CAT- Certified Accounting technician

*Dip IFRS – Diploma in IFRS

*Technical Accountant – Tally, Adv excel and Cloud Computing training

*GST Expert – Practical training in GST returns

*CMA- Cost and management accountant

*Project feasibility reporting

*Digital Marketing

Your institute has completed its one month today, how does it feel?

It’s like a dream come true, where we explore and discover new things, new ideas are encouraged, the institute gives a loud and clear message that education can be way too interesting if the approach is correct

And the response of the students has been overwhelming, in this journey of one month our students and course options have multiplied many fold times and I am thankful to the students for their open-minded approach towards new career options and new teaching methods

What inspired you to come with this institution?

As a student of Udaipur city, I always felt that we had very few career options available as compared to Metro cities and therefore when as a tutor I got an opportunity to introduce some unconventional courses in Udaipur city, I grabbed it and started my own center with the name PFC – Preparation for Career.

As I believe that there is nothing like a weak and intelligent student at the end of the day it’s all about interest, every student can excel in his or her field provided he/she selects the right field as per their interest area.

What career advice would you give to the students reading this?

  • First and foremost, don’t choose something as your career option just because your friends are choosing it or your family members are asking you to choose the field.
  • Understand your aptitude/interest area, inquire about the options available their scope and their area of work/practice and then decide what you want to be, because this is one choice with which you will have to spend your entire life.
  • Will you allow a surgeon who has multiple degrees and has scored India level ranks to perform a surgery on your body if he says that this is the first ever time he will be in Operation Theatre since he never underwent any practical training till date?

The answer would be no, right? So, practical knowledge is important than theoretical knowledge.

  • Training is an indispensable part of any degree, so keep adding on to your skills as an when possible

Who is your role model?

I have 2 sisters and no brother(s), as a father of 3 daughters my dad frequently reminded us that it’s more important for a girl to complete her education and be financially independent than a boy and I am so thankful to him for his guidance and support when It came to my education.

And the same thing has inspired me to start some social Campaign with my students wherein we teach, less privileged girls who cannot afford coaching fees, of XII STD, without any charge.

We heard you run a “donate a book” campaign. What is it?

Here, students can leave their old books on the shelves we have made in the class and those who need the same can pick from those shelves without any questions being asked.

I firmly believe that education is the only way which can help Students change their life and life of people around them. So, let’s guide them well, give them the right direction and watch them create wonders.

Snake Catcher in Udaipur: Padam Singh Rathore

The season of monsoon has approached. Every one of us is a bit fascinated by this season and so are snakes. From last decade people have frequently found snakes in their surroundings. And now that it has been said, ignoring the above fact can have you pay a price.

In order to make the citizens aware of the snake-related issues nearby, we had a conversation with the founder of Wild and Street Animal Rescue Society, Mr. Padam Singh Rathore. He is rightly known as ‘the snake catcher’ in the city for he has rescued an umpteen number of snakes from in and around the city.

In this conversation, he shared valuable information about the concerned issue. Read along to know more about it.

How did you start with the snake rescue work?

About 24 years ago, I got caught in an incident where a water snake was found in the front of my house which is situated near Madar. So, when people used to fish in the canal flowing from Madar, they often used to catch snakes along with the fishes and being afraid of them, they used to kill them. I didn’t like the fact that the innocent snakes are being killed so I picked up the dead snake and observed how they are being held and how can I rescue them.

Then I talked to the local snake charmers and learned the tactics to rescue snakes. I even went to Baroda to learn about the same. Then I came back to Udaipur and started this rescue work.

How many people call on a weekly basis for the snake catching service?

Weekly? We get 15-20 calls on a daily basis. But before we reach a place for the rescue there are certain points that we keep in mind. Like we only rescue snakes that are found in homes and public places. If they are found near farms or forests then we do not rescue them because this disturbs the ecosystem. If the count of snakes decreases near farms then the count of rats would increase. And most of the snakes found in the city are non-venomous.

What difficulties do you face while rescuing snakes here?

Most of the times, the distance of the location from our office is more so by the time we reach there, the snake vanishes. Apart from that, it is really difficult to control panicking people around the snake. Either they are panicking or they want to click selfies or pictures with the snake. Snake is one reptile that is afraid of humans. So when there is so much human chaos around, the snake hides somewhere and often gets aggressive.

Also, ours is a 24 hours service, so it gets difficult to find houses of people during night time. Even the snake becomes less visible in the dark.

What species of snakes are most common in the city and in which areas?

32 species of snakes can be found in the city out of which only 4 are venomous namely Cobra, Saw Scaled Viper, Russel’s Viper, and Krait.

The old city of Udaipur from Delhigate, Hathipole, Surajpole to Udaipole is mostly snake proof. And even if there are any snakes, they are non-venomous. But with time, Udaipur has been stretching a bit in terms of area. So, the habituation of humans has reached places which used to be agricultural land or forests like Bedla, Rampura, Shobhagpura, etc.. So these are the places where the most number of snakes are rescued from.

If someone finds a snake in their household, what all things should he keep in mind?

The first and the foremost thing to keep in mind is to not tease the snake. Nowadays, after watching channels like NatGeo and discovery, people think that they can easily catch a snake. If you see one, click a picture of it and send it to us so that we can inform you about the do’s and don’ts related to the type of snake before we come to rescue it. And in case it’s not possible, simply call us and we’ll be there.

To prevent snakes in your household, make sure to clean your garden area regularly. Remove all the burrows of rats because that’s one place where snake goes in search of rats. During summers, snakes rest in cold places such as coolers, bathrooms, wash basins, water tanks etc. and during summers, this cold-blooded animal seeks warmth near gas stoves, under vehicles, etc. Keep a check at all these places to stay safe.

Where do you release the snakes after catching them?

It completely depends on the kind of snake. For example, if it’s a water snake, we release it in the waters of a nearby forest, if it’s a venomous snake, then it would go in the dense forest nearby, similarly, if it’s a non-venomous snake, it is released at the beginning of a forest. This entire process occurs in the presence of forest department.

How much do you charge for your service?

Within the radius of 2 km from our office, we deliver free services. In the year, 2017 we received calls from nearby villages too. This one time we received a call from Bhopal for the rescue. At such time, we just charge for the conveyance it needed to reach there. Also, it is not possible for us to go at several places at the same time, so we have taught the tactics to rescue a snake to people in Dungarpur, Sagwada, etc.

It is better to be informed than to be injured.

In case you are in need of a snake rescuer, call Padam Singh Rathore at 9829597722/9414234826.

If you have any such valuable information that you want to share amongst the citizens, then write to me at juhee@udaipurblog.com.

Daan Utsav: Celebrating the ‘Act of Giving’ in Udaipur

Daan Utsav is an initiative to encourage ‘the act of giving’ which is why it was earlier known as Joy of Giving. The event was launched in 2009 and is celebrated every year beginning from Gandhi Jayanti stretching all the way for a period of 8 days i.e. 2nd to 8th October.

The intent of the event is purely based on the idea of ‘giving’ and that’s the reason why some people donate money, some their time, some their skills and some their love. A large number of socially conscious citizens who can be – individuals, owners, donors, schools, colleges, corporates, NGO’s etc. volunteer their time across the country.

Some of the gestures of kindness in the event involves school children donating a fist full of grains to the needy, to college students teaching how to make LED bulbs to villagers, from people making fresh sandwiches and sharing them with the slum children to corporate employees fulfilling wishes of the underprivileged children.

If you are willing to participate in Daan Utsav, you just need to follow these four simple steps:

  • Do an act of kindness during the Daan Utsav week.
  • Put a Happy Dot (a small happy smiley) sticker on your cheek/finger/hand.
  • Take a selfie
  • Share it on social media: Personal account on Facebook and Daan Utsav Udaipur Page, Twitter, Instagram or Whatsapp with the hashtags #DaanUtsav #HappyDot #yourorg with a line on the act you performed.

So, are you ready to take a step towards kindness?

Udaipur Chamber of Commerce and Industry is a multi-district apex body of trade, industry, mining, education, and tourism. This leading association of southern Rajasthan has more than 500 direct members. While UCCI works to promote industrial development in the region, it is actively involved in skill development for the youth to build their career in the industry.

It is a matter of pride for the association that it was inaugurated by Hon. Minister Shri. Nitin Gadkari last year on 14th July. Conceptualised by UCCI president, Shri Hansraj Choudhary and brought to reality by tireless efforts of CA Ravish Mandawat and CA Devashish Kogata, the programme has garnered a massive interest among the youngsters and every year it helps around 400 students develop their skills and find jobs in the accounting profession.

VTC provides a very exclusive GST Accounting training which includes the practical knowledge along with the theory. Each batch consists of only 20 students and more. These Stats Show That Udaipur really is a Touristic City!

It wouldn’t come as a matter of surprise to anyone if I say that Udaipur is a tourist city. And it definitely should be with the inordinate amount of beauty it beholds. From history to nature and to hospitality there is absolutely no field left where the city disappoints any tourist which is one of the reasons why people love coming to the city and spend their leisure time between the lush Aravali Hills with their friends and family.

Being a bit curious about tourism in the city, we had a very interesting conversation with the Deputy Director of Udaipur Tourism, Miss Sumita Saroch. In this conversation, we came to know about the current as well as the past status of the tourism in the city. In Addition to that, we also came across the statistics related to the tourism where certain points could be noted.

Source: Patrika

Facts derived from the statistics of tourism in Udaipur:

  • The number of tourists that flocked to the city in the year 2017 was 2.74 Lakh where 83,400 were Indians and 1,90,500 were foreigners.
  • It was noted that the maximum number of tourists in the year 2017 came to Udaipur in the month of November and December which were 1,31,000 and 1,38,000 respectively.
  • While the minimum was in the month of May with just 61,000.
  • About 9% increment in the tourist rate was seen in the year 2017 from the previous year.
  • In the past 7 years, 2017 was the golden year in tourism as the maximum number of tourists flocked to the city in this very year.
  • There are around 658 authorized tourist guides in the city of Udaipur from which 600 holds a city-based license and the rest holds a state-based license.

While this conversation, Ms. Saroch gave a very important message to the people of Udaipur by which they can effectively contribute to the tourism of Udaipur. Watch the video below to know what the message is.
