With wide cultural diversity, religions, languages, and beliefs, we say India is not merely a country but a beautiful art piece blended with vibrant colours. In India, every other day is an event or a festival. One such festival is Krishna Janmashtmi, which is celebrated as birth anniversary of Lord Krishnaand is observed with great vehemence. According to Hindu Mythology, Lord Krishna was born on the 8th day of Krishna paksha (called Ashtami) of Shravan month which usually falls in the months of August-September.
The story of Krishna is deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of India and the people of this land revere him as divine. Lord Krishna is considered to be the eighth incarnation (avatar) of Lord Vishnu who took birth in a human embodiment to end all the evils and injustices. Krishna was the eighth son of king Vasudeva and Devaki and was born in prison, since his parents were captured and imprisoned by his uncle, Kansa. When Kansa identified that his sister Devaki’s child Krishna would become the cause of his death, he wanted to kill him to eliminate the root cause. Hence, after his birth, he was secretly sent to Nanda and Yashoda who then brought him up as their child.
Krishna is known for his mischievousness, and since his childhood, he was very fond of Makkhan (Butter). Ancient Hindu tales reveal that he used to steal butter from his neighbour’s place and thus also called with the name “Makhan Chor”. To commemorate the birth of Shri Krishna this festival is also recognized as Dahi Handi Parv. During Janmashtmi a Matki Phod event is held at places wherever it is celebrated; in which a group of individuals build a human pyramid to reach the matki (earthen pot) which is hung at a certain height. In India, it is celebrated zealously in Mathura and Vrindavan, the birthplace of Krishna and in the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and northeastern states of Assam and Manipur.
In Mewar region, Vaishnavas consider it as the most important religious festival because it marks the victory of good over evil. In Udaipur, the festival is celebrated in a way that showcases the typical Mewari culture. Several cultural activities are performed in different regions of Udaipur, but the most prominent and renowned one is held at Jagdish Chowk. The Dahi Handi event at Jagdish Temple is the biggest and renowned not only among locals but also visitors. Since Udaipur is a famous tourist destination many foreigners also love to attend this fest and witness this phenomenal event.
In Mewar region, people usually keep fast and open it the next day or after midnight because Krishna was born at midnight. Devotees believe that Krishna will be born at midnight and thus they should eat only after his birth. In India, you can’t say it’s a festival unless special sweets are prepared, and Chappan Bhog is one for which Krishna Janmashtmi is famous for. ‘Chappan Bhog’ is a cluster of 56 dishes which is offered to God on the following day, which is known as ‘Nanda Utsav.’ After the offering, the food or Prasad is then distributed and shared among devotees so they can end their fast. Lord Krishna is also known as ‘Makhan Chor’ or “Laddu Gopal” or “Baal Gopal” and called with numerous other names. Since he was very fond of butter and milk, the Bhog mainly include dishes of milk like Makhan mishri (milk cake), rabri, rasgulla, murabba, saag, khichdi, milk, dry fruits, etc.
Idols of Lord Krishna is adorned with news clothes and ornaments. The idol is placed in a swing called “Jhulaa,” which is also a part of the ritual. Then it is placed in a cradle to symbolize his birth. Women also draw tiny footprints walking towards their house, as a symbol for Krishna’s journey into their homes.
The bustling crowd at Jagdish Chowk, the colorful attires, the chants of “Haathi Godaa Palki Jai Kanhaiya Laal Ki”, the sweets made of milk and cream, pink-colored Gulal in the air, everything you see around is so enticing that one could easily forget the troubles of life and embrace the festive vibes with both arms open.
Udaipurblog wishes a very happy and joyous Krishna Janmashtmi to all its readers!!!
If you have ever heard about Udaipur, its culture and traditions, there are hardly any chances you haven’t heard about the Mela (fair) of Hariyali Amavasya. Hariyali means greenery while Amavasya refers to the no-moon day as per Hindi terminology. It is a festival to rejoice rains due to which the earth gets covered with a blanket of greenery. Every year this festival is celebrated with high energy and enthusiasm in the Mewar region. There are many rituals associated with this fest, and people in Northern states of India celebrates this with great fervor.
As it is a known fact that rains are considered as blessings of God and to show gratitude towards nature and its blessings, people celebrate Hariyali Amavasya to welcome the onset of monsoon. Like Rajasthan it is also celebrated in other Northern states of India such as Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Maharashtra. In Maharashtra it is celebrated as ‘Gatari Amavasya’, in Andhra Pradesh as ‘Chukkala Amavasya’ and in Orissa it is known as ‘Chitalagi Amavasya’. As with the names, the rituals and traditions vary in different parts of the country, but the spirit of celebrations remains same.
Being an Udaipurite I still remember, how eagerly as kids we used to wait for this day. The chief thing that attracted us the most about this festival was the Mela (fair) and which still is. We eagerly used to wait for this day which was marked by a school holiday and it was customary to visit the fair to enjoy rides and food with family. Everywhere you could see, are the vibrant colors, the bustling crowd and the vendors shouting out loud. While the women folks mainly loved to shop at the fair stalls, however, we as kids would make it sure not to miss out any of the rides and food was ofcourse our motto of life. The interesting part is, still after so many years nothing has really changed except the climatic changes.
Let’s know some interesting facts about this Mela:
It is believed that the first Hariyali Amavasya Mela was set up by Maharana Fateh Singh, to celebrate the completion of a reservoir near Dewali pond, which eventually became a tradition and is still continuing.
Hariyali Amavasya is a two day celebration where the last day is usually reserved for women.
Like any other festival, this festive fair is not confined to a particular religion but gathers people from all the religion, class and castes which is certainly a mark of cultural integration.
The famous dish of Rabdi-Malpua is the showstopper of this mela. Most people just visit to palate the renowned dish which is also considered as a monsoon cuisine by locals.
Public places such as Moti Magri, Saheliyon ki Baari etc which usually have an entrance fee during other days of the year are kept free for these two days.
The Mela is more of interest to the tribals and rural crowd near Udaipur region, who comes up in huge crowd in traditional costumes and jewelry.
Also elderly folks of this region have a strong belief, that it will definitely rain on the day of Hariyali Amavasya.
The wooden sword wrapped with colorful papers, a colorful feathered hat and small trumpets of paper called Poopadi in native language are the souvenirs which validate your presence at Mela.
Women collectively pray for good rainfall and bountiful harvest.
Green is the color of the day and ladies in the Mewar region wear green which represent their love for nature.
Several schools and social groups & organizations celebrate it a day before, organizing cultural programs.
It is considered auspicious to plant a sapling on this day which is also having religious significance as per Hindu community.
This year Hariyali Amavasya will be observed on 1st of August, which will also be a collector declared holiday for schools, colleges and all government organizations. Observing the increasing popularity of this festival among domestic and international tourists, efforts are also made by Municipal Corporation of Udaipur to have this historic fair registered in the Guinness Book of World Records.
While the festival is the time to rejuvenate and rejoice, there is an increasing threat as well from past few year, about depleting rainfall and vanishing forests in the Aravali region. As true Udaipurites lets join hands to protect our environment and trees so that our future generations could also enjoy this historic Mela.
Udaipur’s Most Loved Festival made history on 4th November 2018! A whooping footfall of 8000+ people was witnessed on the event day. Yes! You heard me right! 8000+ people; which is undoubtedly the highest number ever seen in any private festival In and Around Udaipur. This whole write-up is dedicated to the tiniest to the largest elements of Udaipur Light Festival 2018, which made the festival ‘Oh-So-LIT’!!!
For all those who were a part of this colossal and magnificent festival can relive the memories, while for the ones who didn’t show up- we are giving you reasons why to attend the festival NEXT YEAR!
The 7th Year of Udaipur Light Festival was not just bigger and better but an epitome of excellent celebrations for the people of Udaipur. A one-of-a-kind and state-of-art concept of UDAIPURBLOG that is new and fresh every year- as they say, “Fine Wine Gets Better with Time”.
So, what made ULF so LIT…LIT AF?
A festival for the people of Udaipur
ULF is indeed the most loved and happening festival and we the people of Udaipur long to attend such an amazing day around Diwali. Starting from the venue I have listed everything that has made ULF 2018 a MEGA HIT.
Venue
The spanking venue, little away from the hustle bustle of the main city, nestled amidst nature- Shouryagarh Resort & Spa was one idyllic place for ULF. All green and ample space for creating the magic of ULF 2018.
Theme
This year ULF was inspired by Light so you wouldn’t have to guess or be surprised to find a décor with a lot of light and LIT elements. An amazing theme to compliment the concept of Diwali Season, sure to transcend you to another world!
Artists
A power-packed lineup is all you need to make the crowd ga-ga! Kutle Khan Project was the first artist to perform at ULF 2018 and no doubt the folk artist took our hearts away with his energetic stage presence. Headlining the event was ‘Musical Journey by B PRAAK’ who has sung some amazing songs including the very famous, Mann Bharrya. The artist gave a powerful performance and the people of Udaipur loved him.
Last up, the amazing DJ-Duo Shameless Mani & Shanaya took the stage and dropped some pounding bass. Their performance was dripping in energy and electric vibe! The event flow was amazingly managed by dashing Emcee Vishaal Aloysius Rasquinha.
How many of you did actually lose track of time? I know a lot would say yes!
Stages
Never-seen-before, there were 2 stages at ULF 2018. The LBERT acoustic stage which I could call the eye-candy stage became the major attraction during the daytime. With back to back singers, percussionists and lot many multi-genre artists performing live, this stage was on fire.
The Main Stage got the best of the attention of the crowd after the dusk began. The blinding lights coordinated with music were amazing and peeps were TRIPPIN’ over it which made it totally LIT!!!
Sound
The never seen before heart throbbing Sound on LAcoustics K2 which touched everyone’s heart and soul.
Production
Seriously, guys, that is something you can call LIT AF! The entry was lit and then my favorite part- the LED screen placement of ‘UDAIPUR’. The stage, the photo booths, the décor at the food court and whatnot; the production was never seen before a no-brainer.
Food Court
8 food stalls at the food court of ULF catering to diverse taste buds were located just as you entered the main arena close to the LBERT acoustic stage. The food stalls also accepted electronic mode of payment easing out hassle, giving you a cashless experience.
Adventure Zone
First time in Udaipur, Body Zorbing was introduced in any festival or an event. Also, there were Water roller and Meltdown which were also new to any event in Udaipur.
LIVE Men’s Grooming
In association with our men’s grooming partner, LBERT Men’s Grooming, ULF 2018 witnessed a whole new concept of LIVE men’s grooming. Guys could actually go there and get themselves groomed at the stall. There were two hair stylists present at the stall who were styling hair and beards of the guys. It was again a one-of-a-kind concept in any event in Udaipur.
Zero tolerance to drugs and any malpractices
“We cannot control everyone present at the venue, but we make sure to check everyone prior to entering in the venue. We have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to any kind of narcotics or malpractices. When someone is caught with drugs or indulged in any kind of ill-practice we immediately expel them out of the festival,” Ronak Chauhan, Team ULF.
The presence of drugs, cigarettes and other forms of narcotics cannot be denied at any festival but we keep our policies straight.
Behind Udaipur’s most loved festival
Behind the scenes is too mainstream, we work on the front! Hard work, dedication, round-the-clock work and days of sweating in the sun has made ULF a masterpiece as it is. A special thanks to all our team members and volunteers, without them it can never have that essence of glory!
We would also like to extend our gratitude towards our main sponsors without whom ULF would not have emerged as one great festival: MIRAJ Group, Rivona Naturals, LBERT Men’s Grooming.
The amazing production team which made it well coordinated and LIT –
Mega Sound – For the Amazing Sound that Udaipur got to experience.
Ananta Stage Craft – For the LIT Stage Lights.
Apsara Tent House – For the Ground Production & Decor.
Bharat LED Wall – For the Creative ‘UDAIPUR’ LED.

The most happening festival of Rajasthan – Udaipur Light Festival 2018 is around the corner and the adrenaline rush of every Udaipurite is going to pump up real soon. But at such festivals, a little carelessness of ours makes our experience unpleasant. So before heading towards the world of amazement, check out the list we have prepared about the things you should keep in mind before going to ULF 2018.
Collect your passes and wristbands beforehand
For the entry to ULF 2018, you have to first buy the passes which will let you redeem the wristbands. The wristband is necessary for you to enter the ULF ground. Now, make sure that you collect your passes and wristbands before the event so that you don’t have to stand in long queues also the chances to miss any of the exciting activities inside reduces.
Style like you own it
Styling for an event like ULF 2018 is a very confusing as well as an important task as there are going to be a lot of people you’ll meet in the festival and you won’t want to leave a bad impression on any of the people around you, right? So it is important to select the right outfit for yourself which will not just look good on you but will also give you all the comfort that you need so that when you groove your feet on the music, you don’t have to manage your outfit repeatedly.
Don’t forget to grab a quick bite in between activities
We know the activities inside the event are too happening but make sure you grab a quick bite in between them. There will be a lot of stalls placed on the venue from where you can choose whatever you want to have. Make sure to remain hydrated throughout. You wouldn’t want to faint in the middle of the event.
Make new friends
At festivals like such, hordes of people throng from different cities. Don’t be a sourpuss and make sure that you make a lot of new friends. Be the social butterfly and I bet you won’t only have the best time of your life but you would also learn innumerable things from people with different mindsets.
Don’t miss the adventure activities
While everyone is excited about the musical performances, trust me, the adventurous activities before them are as happening as ever. These interactive games and adventurous sports will give you a perfect opportunity to connect to different people while having fun. And who knows who might end up winning a game or two.
What to carry
There are several things that you should carry to the event which will make your event smooth and reduce any hindrance.
Selfie stick – Trust me, you’re going to capture a lot of pictures with a lot of people. A selfie stick will come in handy at such moments and will give you a bunch of stunning pictures.
Face mist – Sweat is very natural with a huge crowd dancing on the beats of amazing artists. A face mist will keep you going and refreshed for the rest of the event.
A water bottle – It is important to stay hydrated and at the same time it is not possible to run from one corner to another to drink water during a concert, so keep a water bottle with you to not get tired and have the most out of ULF 2018.
Some cash to go – keep a little cash with you in case you want to eat something or buy something from the stalls around.

Rajasthan is a land of colors and festivals. Every day is a fiesta here and every region has a number of fests, fairs, and processions which add to the culture and heritage of the entire state. A heritage and culture-filled city like Udaipur gives its visitors a lot to carry with themselves – an array of colorful memories. Not just that these are pleasing to the eyes, these fests and fairs are also great for capturing, if you’re a photo enthusiast.
Festivals
These festivals are especially celebrated in Rajasthan (Udaipur). Obviously, there are a lot of nationally celebrated festivals.
Gangaur festival
One of the most colorful festivals of Udaipur is the Gangaur Festival. This fest is held two weeks after Holi every year and is visited by a large number of tourists from various parts of the world. The word ‘Gangaur’ is made up of two words- ‘Gana’ is another name for Lord Shiva and ‘Gaur’ is synonymous with Gauri or Goddess Parvati which symbolizes marital bliss.
The conviction behind the festival carries the ceremony in which the unmarried women worship ‘Gauri’ for bestowing them with a good husband, while married women do so for the welfare, health, and longevity of their husbands and a buoyant married life.
The festival begins on the first day of Chaitra, the day following Holi and continues for 18 days, typically in the month of March and April. This year it started on 2nd March and the main event is on Tuesday, 20 March 2018.
Gavri Festival
After the monsoons, in the months of September and October, the forty-days-festival “GAVRI” is celebrated by Bhil tribe in Udaipur, Rajsamand and Chittor districts of Rajasthan. The entire males of the community, even children participate in this dance-drama symbolizing a healthy environment and it intends to ensure the well-being of the community and the village.
Until Gavri concludes, these people don’t consume green-colored food, non-vegetarian food, and alcohol. In the performance, they pray to Lord Shiva and his wife, and each day the performance is set up at different locations for 5-6 hours.
Teej Festival
When the rain comes down, spirits soar high in celebrations. Song and dance mark the gaiety of the Teej festival in the city. It is held every year during the Hindu month of Shravan and marks the advent of the monsoons. In India, it is rightly said, there are Saat Din Aur Nau Tauhar (seven days and nine festivals). Udaipur, a happening place, is no exception. Makar Sankranti (Also known as Uttarayan) is a big festival in Lake City. According to astrologists, while rotating the sun enters different ‘rashis’ on Makar Sankranti, it leaves Dhanu Rashi and enters Makar Rashi. That is why it is called Makar Sankranti. The winter begins to become less severe. There are other reasons for this celebration.
It is believed that on this day Lord Vishnu killed all the demons and the battle between the gods and demons ended. During Mahabharat, Bhishma Pitamah decided to leave his body. This was the day on which river Ganga came down on the earth. The new harvest is offered to the gods. Lord Surya himself went to his son Shani’s house. There is a tension between the two. To escape the ill effects we are advised to bathe in holy waters, perform religious rites give alms.
It is interesting to learn that while rotating on its axis, the earth lags behind every year so Makar Sankranti is shifted by one day in 80 years. According to an encyclopedia, it used to come on Christmas day 1700 years ago. It fell on 12th January when Vivekanand was born, during Akbar’s reign it came on 10th January.
People visit their relatives and friends and share special dishes such as porridge made with the new crop of grain and milk. The mood is one of merriment. Cattle are fed with green grass as part of charity and alms are given to beggars who gather in large numbers not only outside temples but also move around in different localities of the city.
The temples and the town are thronged with devotees after an early bath in water bodies like Pichola, they go to temples with offerings. In Jagdish Mandir, there is ‘Panchamrit Snan’ in the morning. The idol is dressed in velvet clothes. The Lord is offered ‘Kichdi’, ‘Halwa’, ‘KesariaBhat’, etc. Bhajans are sung. In Srinathji Ki Haveli, the idol is clad in gorgeous attire. The Lord is offered a bull and play items. Recipes made with ‘til’ are offered to the Lord in Asthal Mandir.
In streets and open places, children and even some elderly are seen playing ‘Satolia’ and ‘Mardari’. But these traditional games are being gradually replaced by cricket.
Kite flying in Udaipur used to be limited to Nirmala Ekadashi, but now it has become very popular also on Makar Sankranti. Maybe it is so due to the influence of a large number of Gujaratis who have settled in Lake City. Due to this craze over 15,000 kites are procured every year. The kites liked most by children are those of Motu Patlu, Spiderman, Tom and Jerry, Mickey Mouse, Chhota Bheem, Pogo, and Bahubali. Also popular are kites of film stars such as Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma, and Salman Khan. So also those of political leaders like Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi. For those who do not like plastic kites, the ones made with cloth are also on offer.
Makar Sankranti that has become a big festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Lake City.
