Lone passengers especially women are cynical when they sit inside a cab, worried till they reach their destination. Following the success models of ‘She Taxi’ in Kerala and ‘Pink-Auto’ in Jharkhand, the road transport department has embarked on a similar initiative to run all-women cab service in Udaipur. In the first phase, 50 women drivers would be trained and given license under ‘Mission Meera’, the initiative which intends not only to improve road safety but also empower women through providing jobs to them in an entirely new sector.

“Women are safe and cautious drivers and with the increased number of crimes against tourists in recent times, we are sure visitors would prefer these cabs for safety. So this soon-to-be smart city may see alert female drivers through the mission” said Dr Mannalal Rawat, the regional transport officer. The all- women taxi service may begin by the end of the month as few women are already under training, officers claim. The transport department recently organized a workshop in collaboration with the Udaipur municipal corporation and district administration wherein driving school operators agreed to extend free driving lessons to such women.

‘Mission Meera’ was envisaged by the road transport department and entrepreneur Durga Naval who runs a driving school for women in the city. Naval is the third woman in India to have been granted the HMV (heavy motor vehicle) license. Presently there are only two women in Udaipur including Naval who have commercial driving licenses.

Naval has a license to drive trucks and other HMVs while one Manju Khatri has a license for tempo driving. “ Women with underprivileged backgrounds and minimum qualification of 8th class, would be given preference” Rawat said. . The selected candidates would have to take practical and theoretical classes in driving and those who pass the mandatory written test would be granted licenses accordingly. The department would assist these ‘Meeras’ in getting placements in various taxi service providing companies to take the female sightseers for a ride in the city area. At a later stage, the ‘Meeras’ may even be assisted in getting loans to purchase cabs of their own for a startup, authorities suggested.

Udaipur is now selected among first list of Top 20 Cities to be developed as Smart Cities in India. Venkaiah Naidu, Urban Development Minister on Thursday announced this list of First 20 Cities which will be assigned with the budget.

“The investment of Rs 50,802 crore has been proposed in selected smart cities and towns during the five-year period.”

Rajasthan was the first state to submit Smart City plans last month. The state sent proposal for development of Ajmer, Jaipur, Kota and Udaipur as Smart Cities but only Udaipur & Jaipur turned out to be the winning cities.

First to elucidate what is Smart City actually, smart cities are the urban regions that are developed in all spheres as such from its infrastructure, sustainable growth, basic facilities to the advanced IT. The government on the same date declared the first 20 cities to be undertaken under the ‘smart city mission’

Among the potential 20 cities, Udaipur stands as one of the exceedingly potential city that would witness a ‘smart growth’. Modi, in one of his speeches mentioned that its the “smart citizens” of the city that would make it one and stand as the base of growth. Undoubtedly Udaipur amidst level headed and wise citizens but an approach that deals with the vision that beholds Udaipur as an utterly developed and enhanced city is necessary. The development areas to be looked upto includes Core Infrastructure elements that is: better water supplies, efficient use and availability of electricity in all parts of the city, Sanitation including solid waste management.

As the basic core infrastructure elements are revamped the city would capture an entirely new face. Appropriate sanitations would let the lakes and parks of the city cleaner and with a new charm. Another important area of development is urban mobility and public transport. The city would be acquired with advanced public transport, providing cheaper and convenient mobility. A better infrastructure that includes building of new roads and flyovers could reduce the traffic chaos and accidents. Infrastructure development focuses on hospitals, educational Institutions and Official buildings too!

The city has been addressed a growth in the latter already. Udaipur is one of the cities that has accepted and adopted to vigourious changes comfortably and looks forward to the same in future. The city envisages a complete digital change and availability that refers the IT becomes the base for all the activities happening and for providing essential services to the residents.

The other things that would be focussed on would be sustaining the environment, providing better security and robust connectivity. Let us, the citizens of Udaipur equip our minds with realistic and reasonable thoughts and ideas to make the vision of a smart city come true in every aspect and see our darling city transform magnificently.

4 New Daily Flights to soon start from Udaipur Airport

With the Advent of Tourist Season, India’s largest airline IndiGo recently announced for the commencement of 4 new daily non-stop flights from Udaipur — two each from New Delhi and Mumbai by the last Saturday of October.

Four flights between Delhi-Udaipur and four between Mumbai-Udaipur have been predetermined.

The announcement was made on 5th of October where the airlines’ President Aditya Ghosh said that Maharana Pratap International Airport will soon see start of both work and leisure passengers travelling to and from Lakecity. With this, IndiGo will now be conducting services in India’s 39 important airports.

This will, now vanguard to open more options for the travelers travelling to and fro Udaipur with best of services and on-time performance, as the airline said.

Udaipur will be the airline’s 34th domestic destination, which also flies to five international destinations.

Udaipur, second in the world to have the unique multi-application solar telescope (MAST) launched

Udaipur is now housing India’s biggest multi-application solar telescope (MAST) in the Solar Observatory (stationed on an island in the middle of Fatehsagar lake). This World’s second largest telescope after China was inaugurated on August 4, 2015. Under the project, the telescope will maintain regular surveillance over the sun automatically and take digital velocity images of it every minute. This unique telescope will discern the sun and facilitate space weather predictions in future and detailed study of solar activities. This will enhance the understanding of scientists about solar flares and would get 3D pictures of the phenomena.

About the Project

The MAST project has been supervised by the Ministry of Science and Technology and will be dealt by the PRL (Physical Research Laboratory, Research Institution in Ahemdabad). Reports say, a sum of 26 crores has been spent on the project so far. The main idea behind this project is that obtaining the high spatial and temporal resolution observations of solar activities will help experts understand the various dynamic phenomena occurring on the sun’s surface, as said by professor UR Rao, a space scientist and chairman of the governing council of PRL. It also aims to combine the techniques of helioseismology (study of the propagation of wave oscillations, particularly acoustic pressure waves, in the Sun) with magnetic field measurements. The reason it has been installed in Udaipur is because of the Solar Observatory’s strategic location. The scientists had proposed for MAST in 2004 and the telescope has now been made operational after 11 years.

USO (Udaipur Solar Observatory)

The Udaipur Solar Observatory (USO) was built in the year 1976 by Dr. Arvind Bhatnagar, later joined by Dr. Ashok Ambastha. It is currently headed by Dr.P. Venkatakrishnan.

The 39 year old observatory is encircled by water where temperature at the surface layers is minimal resulting in less dramatic climate on island than on continents. This, in turn, will lessen the upheaval and chaos in the air propagating a clearer image quality and accuracy. Also, the observatory witnesses continuous sunshine during the major part of the year which assists the advanced solar telescope to upgrade the resolution.

Unique features of the telescope

MAST is different from other telescopes in the sense that it is capable of capturing three dimensional aspects of the solar magnetic fields. It has larger apertures which will not only increase the resolution, but also to increase the light-collecting power usually in the day time. MAST is believed to have main optical elements with long focal lengths and light paths operating in a vacuum or helium to eliminate air motion due to convection inside the telescope.

The 50cm aperture telescope is known for its solar observations including high resolution photospheric and chromospheric solar activity, velocity, magnetic field, mass ejections and the evolution of solar active regions and studies pertaining to solar flares. While its rear part was developed by the observatory, its front was developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation.

While MAST will help researchers profusely in studying the sun and its related components, it will usher the country to a voluminous amount of astronomical information that is owned only by a few countries in the world.

Here’s a good news for the smart citizens of the “would be” smart city, Udaipur. This morning, the Prime Minister officially announced the selected 100 cities for the Smart City Project. This turns into a merry making for udaipurites as our city has been selected in the project aimed at developing cities and towns. Congratulations to the people of Udaipur for the upcoming 10 years will grow Udaipur into what we ever dreamt of. Proving this mission as an important milestone in lakecity’s development.

The next big question that hits our mind is what exactly this project is going to fetch Udaipur? So there are some of the possible achievements and features that will make Udaipur grow better.

One of the most important aspects is infrastructure. What brings a drastic change in the look of a city is its infrastructure, also responsible for the overall development of the city. Infrastructure includes roads, bridges, dams, power, etc., which forms a general impression of the town apart from making it safer and easier to live. P.M. Narendra Modi said, “Cities in the past were built on riverbanks. They are now built along highways. But in the future, they will be built based on availability of optical fiber networks and next-generation infrastructure.” Thus, it is expected that when the plans get unveiled by the government, the city witness a larger variety of services.

Another factor that is expected to be covered is cleanliness. The mission brings with it the aspiration of automated garbage collection and clear structure in the pedestrian and sewage system for better living standards. What some political leaders define a “smart city” as is having a stable roof over every head, a toilet in every house and a good transport system while others interpret as having cameras & sensors equipped along with a broadband and WiFi network to collect informations on traffic patterns, parking & security circumstances, water, power usage. This is indeed true that our city wants this connectivity to attract more businesses into the community, increase tourism, enable a host of new public services, and support internal city operations.

Therefore, there are many different elements to a Smart City deployment targeting hospitals, educational institutes, airports, transportations, convention centers and factors alike. Whatever it unfolds, the smart city project seems a master innovation in itself.

So, come to terms udaipurites and get ready for the enormous challenges, visions and the newer look of the lakecity both physically and internally. So let us act together in optimism to make the city of tomorrow an attractive place to work and live.

The bike lovers of ‘Lakecity’ are just about geared up to experience the same love and frenzy as the Harley-Davidson India announces Third Western H.O.G. Ride, Rajasthan; scheduled to be held in Udaipur on 8th March, 2014. The bike lovers of the city will witness with awe and amazement as H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group) members from 13 chapters across India will roll their ‘road rockets’ with attitude on the streets of Udaipur. Over 350 Harley Davidson riders from all across the country will be part of the two day phenomena and will participate in a rally of audacious events such as burnouts, arm-wrestling and the most exquisite H.O.G.
