Taste Your Health at the Food Festival in Udaipur

Food Fest Welcome

A two day food festival has been organised in the city by Shikshantar, a Non Profit organisation on the theme of Jaso Ann, Vaso Man or You are what you eat. The fest has been organised in the Hanuman Temple at Devali near Fateh Sagar between 4-8 p.m. in the evening. Being a variety food lover I made up my mind to visit the place. When I went there I was warmly welcomed by Mr. Manish Jain, the co-founder of Shikshantar. There were many stalls with mouth watering dishes.

Food Fest Banner

The dishes were few famous national and international cuisines we have often heard of, but they have been modified with the local and healthier contents.  To begin with, I started with Tacos, originally a Mexican dish, but modified as per the regional grains and vegetation stuffs of Rajasthan. The crispy base was prepared of the “Khakhra” and the topping of salads and “Rajma” or red kidney beans. The next attraction was of the Veg Kababs made of beetroot or “Chukandar”, with a nice blend of flavours of coconut and coriander chutney.

The cookie sandwiches made of Mal, Ragi or Finger Millet and fresh fruits stuffed within redefined my dictionary meaning of sweet dish, to a healthier one. Sweet dish made of sanwa, a local foodstuff,  coconut laddoos, pineapple puddings, Jwar ki kheer,  pinapple and Sabudana Kheer , Kokam Sharbat (Squash made of kokam) and Pina Colada (A blend of coconut milk and pineapple juice), Ragi steam bread sandwitches, etc  were few more delicious, yet healthy food items present at the fest.

“Fast food has always harmed the healthy living. This food fest is in support of the concept of Slow Food movement, or the movement for switching to our home made food with local food stuffs. Today the high price we are paying for our eatables in the market is actually for the bulk amount of pesticides, insecticides, and harmful chemicals which eventually make way to our stomach. The crops like Ragi, Mal, Bajra are available locally and has been grown in villages and tribal areas from ancient times in this region. They have capacity to withstand intense climate changes. They are not so often attacked by insects, pests, etc and have great nutritive values, much greater than our conventional sources such as wheat, milk etc. These things just need to be promoted to the common masses, who want to sustain with a healthy living”

-Manish Jain

I met the enthusiastic team behind this innovative concept. The concept was coined by Manoj Prajapat and Surendra Gandharva, popularly known as Sunny. The team is energetic, confident, determined, and making every effort to promote the healthy living.

“I started working on the concept of Healthy food and healthy alternatives to fast food with Manoj Prajapat. We have worked for many years, and evolved with our idea, and made them better day by day. All the dishes presented here are cooked in zero oil and zero fat (Ghee/Butter), all the stuffs are either in their raw forms or steamed, as every nutritive value is lost on frying or cooking. We haven’t even used the cow’s milk, so as to ensure zero animal content. Coconut milk has been used as its alternative. In the sweet dishes, every care has been taken care of to ensure that there is minimal usage of additional sweeteners, and the natural sweetness has been emphasized. Still, wherever needed, we have used Gud and Misri instead of sugar.”

– Surendra Gandharva

The Food Fest will be continuing today also, with an entirely different menu than yesterday. This fest is open to all. This is a healthy initiative, and I recommend all to give a visit and taste the health. 🙂

Experiments and Explorations: A Workshop on Theatre

Experiments and Explorations” was a 5 day theatre workshop at Shikshantar with one guiding theme: “The audience”. We explored different means of audience participation, and discussed the many ways in which the theatre can interact with its public. The workshop consisted of exercises, games and creation techniques- looking at the links between theatre with the visual arts, music, dance and street performances. The objective was not only to explore the art form of the theatre, but to try and understand how it might be able to play a part in social and political commentary.

The workshop resulted in a small performance on the street outside Shikshantar. Working with the theme of “Nature”, the participants reflected on the changes that are taking place in our environment – the causes, the effects and the possible solutions.

Cycle Yatra: A trip to our roots of Culture and Nature

THE SWAPATHGAMI CYCLE YATRA LEFT UDAIPUR ON JAN 9, 2011. They will return on the 13th. There were 17 yatris from Rajasthan, MP, Maharashtra, Delhi, Mysore, Gujarat, UP. Many were students of Swaraj University. Several yatris dressed up as animals such as polar bear, penguin, tiger, elephant, etc to raise attention to the global warming and climate change issues. The yatra was organized by Shikshantar.

Cycle Yatra

For those who are new to the cycle yatra idea, it is a weeklong cycle trip into rural Rajasthan. What sets this trip apart from a general cycle trip is that we do not carry any money, electronic gadgets, food or first aid medicines with us. We stop at villages along the route and find work to earn our board and lodge.

While each participant’s learning and experience from such a trip is unique, the general thinking behind such a trip is –

  • We go manual for transportation and basically burn off some calories that we have so lovingly accumulated despite being cholesterol conscious.
  • We go slow (rather than breeze thru in fast cars) and so get a better chance at appreciating nature and rural life.
  • We interact with the local people (rather than just buy stuff off them with money power) in the course of creatively managing our board and lodge.
  • We get a peek into village life and in the process learn skills that we have lost by virtue of being part of the ‘developed’ society. We can also share some skills that we have.
  • We develop an appreciation for local knowledge and skills and the ability to thrive in what nature has provided.
  • We develop some trust in the ability of nature to take care of us and in the goodness of human beings rather than having to constantly struggle for one’s existence as if it is one long battle against nature and other human beings.
  • We get some time to reflect on our own lives
  • We loosen a little the tight stranglehold that money has over our minds and learn that alternative ways to live might exist.

And let us not forget that most important is to enjoy nature, creating music, dance, theatre, games and have a fun filled adventure! This is a real chance to re-connect to the gift culture.

Check out the film from the first yatra to get an idea of the adventure…

We will cycle about 100 km from Udaipur to Jaisamand. The whole region is culturally very rich and still has some jungles left.

What you need to bring along (and remember that everything you bring along has to be carried by you on your bike)-

  1. Personal clothing.
  2. Some bedding (sleeping bag, blanket etc)
  3. Water bottle (if you have a non-plastic one)
  4. Bikes can be rented at nearest town

Sadhna NGO – Empowering Rural Women

Sadhna a unit of Seva mandir was started in 1988 under income augmentation project with women groups in rural, tribal and urban slums belts of Udaipur resign, and enduring through various stages of non-viability, functional effectiveness and finally impressive growth both in terms of production and sales, it has today grown into a self sufficient and independent organization.. This program started with a small group of 15 women who were trained in the skill of appliqué (embroidery), Sadhna’s total artisan membership has increased to 639. The challenge, therefore, was to find kind of something that could be mass based and yet provide adequate returns. So they have chosen Appliqué and Tanka Embroidery, with the idea of building the basic stitching traditions. Major fact to chose it was something women could do while staying at home, and time being. The journey, in the starting years was very difficult but in spite of it, they continue doing this program, and after that this program managed to overcome with problems and turn into a self sustaining unit. Sadhna was registered as a Mutual Benefit Trust on December, 2004 and the year 2005-2006 was the first full year of working. All the artisans are also member owners of Sadhna. Sadhna’s main aim lies in being able to create cluster of artisans, to enable more and more women attain socio-economic empowerment. Sadhna has made a lot of headway on social dimension, and has certainly learnt a lot about the challenges of strengthening & empowering women, using a commercial enterprise as a medium.

Design is the most vital part of any producer group’s identity and success. In its approach to design, Sadhna has attempted to blend innovation with continuity. Sadhna has been developing new designs from last two decades which helped in brand building and creating an identity for Sadhna products. Under this activity, Sadhna do organize design development workshop every year. Designers from different parts of country take part in this workshop and trained to artisans. This year design intervention and product development was carried out across all the categories i.e. Home Furnishing, Garments, Accessories, and Thread Jewelry. The focus was on developing more complex design. Sadhna’s product can be found at Feb India which is India’s largest private platform for products that are made from traditional techniques, skills and hand-based processes, not only in Feb India but at so many larger groups Sadhna’s artisans product can be seen. Sadhna has partnership with Olsen group, Germany. Sadhna is getting its identity in European markets too. TRIFED (Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation on India Ltd.) sponsored workshop with Sadhna, Focus of this workshop was on improving skill levels and design development especially for tribal women.

Sadhna’s work area in Udaipur and nearer is Khanjipeer, Kharol Colony,Delwara, Madar, Sheeshwi, Ratekhet & Manoharpura

The most encouraging aspects, of course, are the changes in women’s lives, their growing involvement and influence in their local communities. There are stories a plenty of women now being able to help their families move out of vulnerability, investing in their children’s education, and gaining the respect of their husband and relatives they also play an active role in decision making bodies of Sadhna, through their representation in management committee and Board of Trustees.. Women are also breaking caste and religious boundaries, and building string horizontal solidarities. One of the earliest locations, Delwara, the women are now leading the efforts towards improving their neighborhoods (sanitation, water, solid waste management, etc.) as also becoming active and articulate participants in panchayat processes. Sadhna has exceeded most expectations, and they credit wholly to women‘s energy & commitment, and hard work and dedication of each and every staff member. All women connected with this program got encouragement and inspiration through the chief executive Ms. Leela Vijayvergia to make these dream reality. Many women members are also part of community level activities, such as setting up local self governance systems for the betterment of their area and villages. These women hold important positions at such forums and the community attributes this holistic empowerment to their learning and confidence building within Sadhna.

Sadhna is looking for strengthen its export market. This year Sadhna did well in the international sales. During the coming year, Sadhna will work on establishing more contacts with overseas buyers, as also developing product ranges which will appeal to foreign markets.their main effort will be to maintain a professional attitude toward the orders especially in terms of quality & time.

On social perspective Sadhna has increased its work areas, increased numbers of artisan too. Sadhna has put its great effort for women welfare, through which women got inspired and connected with it, and self dependency developed in them.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Guru Nanak Jayanti will be celebrated 21 Nov by the Sikh community all over the world. Guru Nanak Jayanti is one of the most important festivals in the Sikh calendar. The celebrations are especially colorful in Punjab and Haryana and it is also celebrated in other parts of India as well. Guru Nanak Dev was the first Sikh Guru and the founder of Sikh religion. His birthday is celebrated as Guru Nanak Jayanti. Guru Nanak Jayanti is also known as Guru Purab. Guru Nanak was born on ” Kartik Poornima” ( full moon day in the month of Kartik ) October/November.  Guru Nanak Dev was born at Nankana Sahab near Lahore in Pakistan in 1469. Guru Nanak is the first Guru in Sikh faith. Guru Nanak was born in a middle class family. From his childhood he had great qualities. He had great learning skills. He was keen to learn Vedas and Sanskrit. He also studied Persian and Arabic as he got association with the Muslims when his father worked for a Muslim landlord. Thus he became learned in Hinduism and Islam. There are so many miraculous incident took place in Guru Nanak Dev’s childhood and young age. He believed in Oneness and Supremacy of God. Guru Nanak Ji was a great saint, poet and a preacher of peace, love and truth.

Holy book of  Sikhs known as ‘ Guru Granth Sahib ’ written by Guru Nanak Dev which is revered as scripture by all his followers. Through this holy book he has spread divine message for his devotees.

Guru Nanak Saheb Ji

There are 3 important principles that every Sikh is supposed to follow:-

  • Meditation on the Holy Name is the sublime method to connect oneself to the Supreme Lord and chant the name of holy God.
  • Every Sikh should earn honestly and work hard. There is no place for laziness in spiritual discipline. One should adopt the lifestyle of simple living and high thinking and always think of winning the approval of God.
  • Charity is an important feature of Sikhism. One should be compassionate to the needy and have a sharing tendency. One should also be equal to all without bias of religions, caste, creed and nationalities.

Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated with great devotion and dedication. The day starts with morning procession from Gurudwara. Three day study of Guru Granth Sahib is done by the authorities of the temple. The works and life of Sri Guru Nanak Dev are glorified. Sikhs take this day as the day to commit to Sikhism more intensely.People decorates their houses and special prayers are held in Gurudwaras*. The prayers also include the recital of ‘Akhand Paath’. In Akhand Paath’ is read continuously from beginning to end for three days. On the main day the holy book ‘Guru Granth Sahib’ is decorated and carried in a palanquin (Palki) in a procession. The procession also includes five armed guards or ‘Panj Pyaras (Five Beloved Ones)  . The Sikh flag known as the Nishan Sahib is carried in this procession too . Grand feast is organized in Gurudwaras, where people eat free of cost. The feast is known as ‘ Guru ka Langar ’ in which people do ‘seva’ or service. The service is offered in form of food preparation, serving food, serving water etc. The procession ends in Gurudwara where community devotees have lunch.
There are large numbers of Sikh family living in Udaipur, so Guru Nanak Jayanti celebration is being held in Udaipur too. There are 5 Guru Dwaras is Udaipur. They are fully decorated and Akhand Paath is being read over there too. All these five Gurudwaras will also be organizing Langer for udaipies  …..So Enjoy !!!!!!!

Making Someone’s Diwali a Special Diwali

Divine Heart Society

There is a saying in Hindi:

Sukh Bat-ne se Badh-ta hai aur Dukh Batne se Ghat-ta hai

We all celebrated Diwali with our family and friends and busted crackers and enjoyed a lot but what about those who either don’t have a family or those whose family have left them…

Divine Heart Society took an initiative to make this Diwali a special one for a few of them by spending time with them and distributing among them sweets and fruits.

A few members of DHS went to Asha Dham Ashram,MullaTalai , which serves those aged and mentally unstable people who either have no one to take their care of, or are left by their children. We went there at about 3 pm on the 5th November 2010 and stayed there till about 6 pm. We distributed sweets and fruits among them and also talked to them and tried on our part to make them feel better and needed and tried to make this Diwali their Special Diwali. We at DHS had also gathered some old clothes donated to us by our DHS members, those clothes which were in good condition were also given to them.

Our DHS members who went there were Jujar Ali Bohra(President, DHS), Muslim Sabunwala(Treasury, DHS), Heena Pathik, Anant Jain, Mehul Jain, Mayank Seth, Abhishek Bansal.

We at DHS heartily thank Asha Dham Ashram for giving us a chance to perform such a noble act. We also thank the DHS members who went to Asha Dham Ashram for their timely support and cooperation and for giving their precious time even on the Festive day. We also thank all our members who supported us with their service in cash, clothes and kind.

Divine Heart Society

DHS President’s message:

We hope to repeat these kinds of events in future and for this we request the people of our city to kindly support us in large numbers specially the youngsters.

Guys and Gals of India, it’s time to be a hero… because yes “Together we Can create miracles
