Delwara- The ‘Town of The Gods’ Near Udaipur

Do you know why Delwara is known as the ‘Town of the Gods’?

Not just the city of lakes is beautiful but also its surrounding area is awestriking. Located just 26 KM away from Udaipur is a small town named Delwara (not to be confused with Dilwara Temples of Mt. Abu). Delwara is quite famous because of the architecture of the monuments and buildings there but majorly it is known for being named as the ‘Town of The Gods’. Let us read why the place is known with such an unusual name.

Delwara is known as the ‘Town of The Gods’ simply because of the fact that the place has a high density of temples. It is evident that the town contains almost 2 to 3 temples in every street. Originally, it is said that Delwara had as many as a thousand temples out of which 400 were Jain Temples. Due to the same, Delwara was once known as ‘Devkul Paton Nagri’ which means the town of the gods.

There are various temples which still exist in Delwara in good condition, and are in fact great places to visit in Delwara near Udaipur.

Some of the sacred place in Delwara are enlisted below:

Palera Talab:

This Talab (small lake or pond) was built in AD 1800 by Rani Sajjan Kumari in the fond memory of her husband, the Jhala prince Mansingh, who died at a very young age. It is after his name, that the lake is also known as Mansarovar Sagar and is the major source of water of the town.

Statue of King Man Singh III:

Another thing made for the king Mansingh is this beauteous white marble statue, standing 2 meters high, in the center of Sajjan Vatika opposite the Bhagwan Vaikunthnathji temple.

Parshvanath Bhagwan Temple (Jain Derasar):

This temple is dedicated to Bhagwan Parshwanath, the 23rd Tirthankara of the Jains. One amazing feature of this temple is a chamber about 5 meters underground, which houses 13 stunning idols of Jain Tirthankaras.  The main temple has a gratifyingly carved idol of Bhagwan Parshwanath made in black marble.

Trimukhi Bawdi/Vav:

The name of this stepwell is due to the fact that it has triple entrances. It was built by the Shrimali Brahmins for performing the traditional rituals related to the temples of Vaikunthnathji and Hanumanji which are situated nearby the Vav.

Indra Kund:

Shiva temple:

The temple is located close by to the Indra kund is also known as Kundeshvar Mahadev. This Shiva temple was built before the Indra kund and was under the local ruler’s terrain.  The temple has a lingam encircled by three faces of Lord Shiva covered by a cobra, the idols of his companion Parvati and the bull Nandi which was his vehicle.

Lakshmi Narayan Mandir:

According to a folktale, an idol from Dwarka flew on its own from and landed at the mandir. The shrine is said to have built here. The builder of the temple was a devotee of the lord, his was known as Shri Padmaji and has statue installed in the premises of the mandir. This temple is temple belongs to the Teli community; Shri Padmaji was also a Teli.

Other than these temples some other prominent names are:

Devigarh was once the residence of the kings of Delwara, from mid-18th century till mid-20th century. Ambika Mata Temple – The Khajuraho of Mewar

At a distance of around 50 km from Udaipur, rests a rarely known gem of a temple which is known as Ambika Mata temple. The village named Jagat houses the architectural temple. Ambika Devi, who is the form of Goddess Durga is the chief deity of the temple. Goddess Ambika is worshipped as goddess Shakti is believed to be the primordial source of energy. She is associated with Durga through her lion mount and is connected to the Jains when a vision from the temple advised Vimal Shah, a minister of the Chalukya King of Gujarat, Bhimdev I, about building a temple of Lord Adinath at Dilwara, Mount Abu.

Source: Astrolika

This ancient temple is said to be constructed in 961 AD, the period when Laxman Mandir at Khajuraho was being constructed. An inscription on the temple suggests that a person named Sabpura who is the son of Vellur has restored the temple in Vikram samvat 1017. The beautiful idols, the posture of the idols, ornaments and the Nagar architectural style of the temple resembles that of Khajuraho temple which is why it is also called – The Khajuraho of Mewar.

Source: Travel with sharad vyas

There are innumerable inscriptions on the pillar and the wall of the temple which charms the eyes of every visitor. The unmatched and eclectic sculptures include Mahishasurmardini, Navdurga, Veenadharini, Saraswati, Ganpati in the dancing posture, Yama, Kuber, Vayu, Indra, erotic sculptures and other figures engaged in their chores. As a Devi temple, most of the temples here represents Goddess Durga, Goddess Laxmi, Brahmani, and other goddesses.

Source: Tour My India

The temples have been perfectly preserved by the State Department of Archaeology and Museum, Rajasthan. It has a pentagonal shape with a gigantic rampart wall in its surroundings which makes it completely exhilarated. One surprising thing about the architecture of the temple is that the unique architectural style doesn’t belong to its surrounding region in any manner. There is no solid evidence of North Indian Hindu temple architectural features or any Rajasthani architectural characteristics in it. It isn’t also blended with local or regional architectural features and characteristics.

Source: Travel with sharad vyas

Apart from the beauteous architecture and sculptures the temple own, it is famous for the fair that is conducted here during the time of Navratri and other functions during Durga puja etc. Along with the religious people all around the world, the temple holds a unique significance for the people interested in archeology, sculptures, and idols.

Every Jain should know this Interesting Story Behind Muchhal Mahavir Temple

A Jain temple located at a distance of around 70 km from Udaipur is a land of intricate architecture shaped up together to form a temple. Ghanerao is the name of the village which houses the temple. The main idol in the temple is the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, Lord Mahavir.

As you enter the stunning temple you will find two gigantic statues of elephants welcoming you and when you go further there will be a beautiful 120 cm long and white colored idol of Lord Mahavir sitting in Padmasana posture.

Source: Glory of Rajasthan

Although the antiquity of the temple is not measured it is believed to be very old. The last renovation was recorded back in the Vikram era, the year 2022 when the idol was installed.

Along with that, a very interesting story is associated with the temple. It is said that Once upon a time, a Rana (king), who was on a hunt, visited the temple. There, the priest offered him some Prasad (a devotional offering made to a god, typically consisting of food that is later shared among devotees) of Lord Mahavir. While eating the Prasad, the Rana found a strand of white hair in it which must have fallen from the priest. Mocking the priest, the Rana asked: “Does your lord has a mustache too?” Having been intimidated by the sarcastic comment of the Rana, the priest affirmed in the fear of getting killed. Rana further making fun of the temple and priest said that today he won’t pay respects to the lord and will come back in 3 days to see the mustache of the lord.

Source: tripoto

The priest was completely puzzled to be able to think about how he will he show the mustache of the lord to Rana. Thus, he spent the next two days in the prayer of the lord in the hope that he will get a way out. After seeing no results in the condition in any way, the priest finally decided to commit suicide rather than getting killed by the king. As soon as he picked the dagger of Bhairon to run it around his neck, the Lord appeared in front of the priest and instructed him to cover the head of the idol with a cloth when the Rana comes and ask him to uncover it only when he is finished his prayers.

Next day, when the king came, the priest did exactly what he was told. When the king saw the piece of cloth covering the head of the idol, he became furious. But the priest explained that he should uncover the face himself once he is done with his praying. The king agreed and when he lifted the cloth after his prayers, he didn’t just see the mustache but a dense beard too. The king instantly regretted having made such an insulting remark and sought forgiveness from the priest.

After that, the mustache and the beard disappeared but the name got stuck and since then, the temple is known as ‘Muchhal Mahavir’.

The Story behind Parshuram Mahadev Temple

The City of lakes as we all know is famous for its shimmering lakes, old palaces, massive forts, luxurious hotels and artistic temples. The word ‘Temple’ itself brings a feeling of divine and saintly belief in a man. Touring around the city not just means roaming around but also considering the art and artefacts-built centuries back. The temples in and around Udaipur are famous for their striking architecture and religious nature. The temples prefigure the cultural aspect of Udaipur. There are numerous temples in Rajasthan as well as in Udaipur to be precise that are famous for their architecture and sacredness. The noble kings of Udaipur had always been great advocates of religion.
It showcases that the beautiful city is blessed with these anciently sacred architectures. These temples also portray the nature, dwellings, portraying the city as a whole. Many of these temples are acknowledged as the holy pilgrimages of the Hindus.

One among them is PARSHURAM MAHADEV TEMPLE. It is commonly known as Shiva temple situated at the border of Pali and Rajsamand district. The temple is situated inside a cave and in order to visit this serene place, devotees have to trek 1.5 km down the unconstructed steep road.
In Rajasthan or you can say in India, whenever a monument is constructed, either a temple, mosque or palace there is always a back story to go with it.

The legend of Parshuram Mahadev Temple

It’s said that Parshuram, the sixth epitome of Lord Vishnu, constructed the cave with his axe in order to worship Lord Shiva at this tranquil place in the foothills of the Aravalli mountain range. That is why the name of the temple is anciently known after Parshuram, the disciple of Lord Shiva. The cave is 3,995 feet above sea-level, and has naturally architected figures of Lord Ganesh and Lord Shiva and also has nine kunds which never go dry (a small reservoir or a small cavity like space where the rainwater is collected). The ancient cave is built beneath the ground floor, there are 500 staircases to reach the holy and sacred cave. This is one of the congenial and pleasant places. It is also known as ‘Amarnath temple of Rajasthan’ and second ‘Amarnath temple of India’.

Festivities

Although there are no such specially organized festivals on Parshuram Jayanti every year on the occasion Shravan Shukla Shashti and Saptami, a great fair is hosted here. Priests of this ancient Parshuram temple will tell a lot more of stories of the history and also the formations which are called ‘Kamdhenu’. Temple is basically located at a distance of 8 km from Kumbhalgarh Fort.

Popular beliefs

A popular myth about this temple is that Lord Badrinath’s cupboard can open the same person who has visited Parshuram Mahadev temple.

Surroundings

Visiting the cave temple can be an exciting yet thrilling experience. Surrounded by lush green valleys, it is a delight for all the flora and fauna lovers. It is nothing less than a trek to reach there, but once you see the cave temple it’s all worth the efforts. Also, the ‘Great wall of India’ a.k.a Kumbhalgarh Fort is located at a distance of approximately 8 km from the temple.

The Parshuram Mahadev Temple is a matter of experience rather than description. We suggest all Udaipurites to visit this sacred and historical marvel at least once.

Well, back then, the idol of Shrinathji was being transferred from Vrindaban in order to protect it from the then Mughal ruler, Aurangzeb. He wanted the deity to reside with him back in Agra, according to sectarian literature. When the idol reached a spot in the village Sinhad, the wheels of the bullock cart got stuck in the mud so hard that it couldn’t move a single inch. It’s then when the priests realized that Shrinathji has chosen the place himself for the temple. The timings of the temple are 5:30 am to 6:30 pm and the entry is free of cost.
