Tourist Guides: Promoters of Tourism

In making Udaipur a big tourist destination, retaining its reputation and also in enhancing it several agencies are involved. The tourist department provides full information about the worth visiting places to the tourists. The forest department develops places like wildlife sanctuaries, bird park and biodiversity parks to attract more visitors whereas local bodies such as the Municipal Corporation and Urban Improvement Trusts try to maintain the important spots in and around the town properly. The hospitality industry treats the tourists in a way that they can enjoy their stay thoroughly. However, tourists guides who have an important role of their own in promoting tourism do not generally get the attention they deserve.

Tourist Guides: Promoters of Tourism
Suraj Soni

According to Suraj Soni (Bijoliya), a popular young tourist guide in Udaipur, a good guide can make things come alive and arouse feelings of tourists that no printed books of history etc. can ever do. Live interaction between the guide and his clients has a unique impact on the latter. However, integrity and authenticity of the guide is an important factor in the profession. No wonder Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar (Prince of Udaipur) advises the guides not to try to impress tourists with myths or common exaggeration but stick to facts. To be successful in their work, they should read a lot to keep their knowledge updated. In case they do not know something they should admit it frankly instead of dolling out wrong information that creates a negative impression about the country.

There are mainly four types of certified tourist guides. Green card holders can function in Udaipur and are certified by Govt. of Rajasthan. Red card holders who are certified by the Central Govt. can work in the four zones throughout the country while for yellow card holders the area is the whole of Rajasthan.Tourist Guides: Promoters of Tourism

The City Palace authorities select tourist guides on their own after taking tough tests and interviews, So far 300-350 guides have been certified after rigorous training that includes a thorough knowledge of the heritage, culture etc. They have to be properly dressed and disciplined. Their behavior is closely watched. A large number of security guards are also employed. In this way, the ‘House of Mewar’ supports a large number of families of guides and security guards. To keep the guides updated, workshops and lectures are organized regularly for which specializes in special fields such as history, culture, architecture, and behavioral psychology are invited.

About the traits of different kinds of tourists, Suraj Soni (Bijoliya) says that tourists from France are more interested in natural sites like lakes and want to know when they were dammed and in what way they are beneficial. Quite a few of them admire the floating palaces like Lake Palace, Jag Mandir, and Jag Niwas. Australian tourists are of reserved nature. They shop a lot without much bargaining. Visitors from South India ask a number of questions about history and shop a lot.Bengali tourist is well read and is curious to learn. Sometimes they tell the guides that they did not tell them certain things during their previous visit. They ask their children to listen carefully to the guide. Quite a few tourists from Gujarat like to know about the places where famous films were shot. Some tourists consider Haldighati a place of pilgrimage, kiss the earth and smear their head with the soil. There are others who want to know how Maharana Pratap’s small army was able to face Akbar’s huge forces. Tourists interested in architecture want to know who built the buildings, their style etc. whereas others are curious about how the fine arts like music and paintings flourished through the ages.Impressed by the magnificent paintings, especially the miniature ones, depicting battles, hunting, expeditions festivals etc, several tourists go in for their replicas. This has come as a big support for the dying art of painting in Udaipur. A small number of tourists show interest in spiritual personalities of Mewar like Chatursinghji and Meera Bai.Tourist Guides: Promoters of Tourism

Well mannered, disciplined, knowledgeable and honest tourist guides also contribute to the development of tourism in their own way.

Sharad Rang – Food and Music Festival, reviving traditional delicacies

Udaipur recently hosted a one of its kind food and music fest, organized by the West Zone Cultural Centre (WZCC) almost a week ago from October 25th to 29th at Shilpgram, which inevitably was one of the biggest food festivals to have been conducted in the city, funnily enough, agreeing to the fact that not many food festivals have been arranged in the city within the past few years. Nevertheless, as they say, its never too late, and so with the setting up of Sharad Rang – Food and Music Festival, we received an opportunity to witness exhilarating performances by different artists from all over the country delivering breathtaking dance and musical performances while hogging on some mouth-watering traditional delicacies of various states of India.

For those who missed a chance to munch on some of the very many delicious food items presented at the fest, here’s a quick overview of the different stalls and the mélange of food served  :

  1. Awadh ki Mithai

Sharad Rang - Food and Music Festival, reviving traditional delicacies

The stall, as the name suggests had decorated containers of mithai (sweets) but didn’t quite boast of Awadhi sweets in particular. Although whatever that we tasted was very fresh and good, it didn’t totally feel like we were trying something new. They had Rabdi, Kulfi, Gulab Jamun and Kesariya Doodh (Saffron Milk) and were very affectionate, because obviously, ‘Muskuraiye, ap Lucknow mein hai!’

      2. Lucknowi Chaat

Sharad Rang - Food and Music Festival, reviving traditional delicacies

This was yet another stall owned by the same smiling face who served us Kulfi and Gula Jamuns. This stall had Basket Chaat, Baingan Chaat (Brinjal Chaat), Palak Chaat (Spinach Chaat), Moong Daal aur Mewa ka Dahi Bada. We tasted the Palak and the Basket Chaat and the first bite alone left us ordering a second one! Crispy and tangy just what a chaat should taste like.

      3. Kashmiri Food

Sharad Rang - Food and Music Festival, reviving traditional delicacies

Well, Kashmiris weren’t far behind in the race too. Coming all the way down to Rajasthan, they obviously had something appetizing in their menu too. While we sipped on Kahwa (a Kashmiri drink made of green tea, saffron, cinnamon, cardamom, and almonds), the owner of the stall told us about the delicacies he had prepared. Specialities included Rista, Gushtaba, Chicken Dhaniya Korma and Rogan Josh! Beginning of a Daawat surely, no?

      4. Maharashtrian food – Neelam food

Sharad Rang - Food and Music Festival, reviving traditional delicacies

Maharashtrians came with their set of preparations as well. Serving Zunka Bakar (a tempting preparation of  Jowar and Gramflour, the staple food of rural Maharashtra), Chaat Cone, Sabudana Vada, Puran Poli (sweet flat bread made with gram flour and jaggery stuffing) and Matka Roti, it was no doubt one of the major attractions of the festival, having already hooked the nation to the world famous Vada Pav! Are you addicted too!?

      5. Gujarati Food

Sharad Rang - Food and Music Festival, reviving traditional delicacies

Gujaratis never lag behind, you just name anything, and Gujaratis are sure to put you in awe. Nothing less can be said for Gujarati food and the love that they sprinkle over it. How could anybody not like the food served with so much of love and warmth? Gujarat brought a dozen of dishes on the plate to devour. Ranging from Thepla, Methi Gota, Ragda Patis, Undhiyu, Khandvi to Dabeli, Fafda, Jalebi, they had almost all of Gujarat kept on the table. Even we got confused what to eat and what not to!

      6. Bihari food

Sharad Rang - Food and Music Festival, reviving traditional delicacies

This was apparently the most talked about stall of all. Food from Gujarat, Maharashtra and the South is much talked about these days, but we know very little of what Bihar has to offer. We were quite impressed seeing the crowd rushing to savor food from Bihar and eating with such fervor their specialties like Litti Chokha (Litti – lentil stuffed balls made of wheat, Chokha – dip made of eggplant, mashed potatoes, and tomato), Mawa ki Anarsa, Shahi Hing Kachori, Ghugni, Sattu Kachori, Mawa ka Chandrakala, Lal Mohan. Litti in the Litti Chokha had striking similarities with Baati, the only different thing being the gram flour stuffing.

      7. South and Punjabi food – Radha Rasoi

Sharad Rang - Food and Music Festival, reviving traditional delicacies

South Indian and Punjabi food is not new to Rajasthan. It has become a part of almost every restaurant menu and wedding and other celebrations. We had hoped for some better and new dishes apart from the Masala Dosa, Aloo Paratha, Gobhi Paratha, Spider Roll (similar to spring roll) but it failed to amaze us. The food was cold and double fried (referring to the Spider Roll here). There was one similar stall also serving Punjabi food in the form of Chole Bhature, Amritsari Kulcha, Sarso ka Saag, Makai ki Roti, which was otherwise fresh and tasty but didn’t quite hit the mark.

      8. Lucknowi food – Wahid Biriyani

Sharad Rang - Food and Music Festival, reviving traditional delicacies

Lucknow has seen the footfall of various Nawabs in history and unlike any other stall we had high hopes for finding nice non-vegetarian food from Lucknow and just when we started feeling the absence of one, this came to the rescue! This was a huge setup and served vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian delicacies but with a drawback; they cooked both veg and non-veg in the same pan using the same oil which made it really worrisome for some vegetarians to choose to eat there. Apart from this, Mr. Aabid Ali Qureshi was a jolly person and insisted us on tasting each and everything. We tasted the Zaafrani Phirni which was mindblowing and some other specialties being Galauti Kebab, Chicken Masala, Mutton and Chicken Biriyani, Warki Paratha, Reshmi Tikka and Roasted Chicken. It was truly a treat for non-vegetarians.

      9. Padam Thaal and Aapno Rajasthan

Sharad Rang - Food and Music Festival, reviving traditional delicacies

How can Rajashtanis be left behind when there’s food been talked about on the counter!? People ate Daal Baati Churma, Besan Gatte ki Sabzi, Papad Methi, Ker Sangri, Sev Tamatar, Mawa Kachori, Jodhpuri Mirchibada, Ajmer Kadi Kachori, Bikaneri Jalebi, and Bajre ki Roti with equal craze and excitement and enjoyed beyond limits. Afterall, a happy stomach is a happy soul!

What are your views? Should we have more festivals like these in our city?

We would love to receive a feedback from you and make improvements for our upcoming articles. Please comment your suggestions and thoughts below. Don’t forget to share. Happy Eating!

1st Udaipur Food Drive concluded – The FUN of Foodies in Udaipur

Jab UB ne har foodie ko milane k liye ‘Food Drive’ organize ki, tab puri kaynat ne bhi shiddat se mausam badalne ki saajish ki…!!”

I am a Foodie

It was the “Springy-Summer evening” of May 7th, 2016, when Udaipur witnessed it’s first “Udaipur Food Drive”. And since it was an event, that was first of it’s kind, obviously the idea was nurtured and the event was successfully organized by the one and only “UdaipurBlog“.

The only thing in common between it’s participating “Foodie” members, was the passion to please their taste buds with the best of dishes, this city offers. The only exception were people like me who were more interested in meeting new people from what not professions and career courses.
Seeing the blooming list of 50 participants (that was occupied in a couple of days), I was sure that Lakecity is full of many talented heads and taste-loving tongues.

With its bright and youthful ambience, well-mannered staff, prompt service, and “Tortilla Pizza” (that made me forget all other items on the menu), OMG Food Court was the first stop of the drive and there could not have been a better start of the drive.

Following this, our next stop “Brewberry” served us with yummilicious beverages like Ice Tea and delicious Garlic Breads and Wraps, sprinkled with some amazing quotes here and there that made us love Coffee a little more!

Since the end has to be perfect, the last stop of the drive was “Chunda Palace” offering it’s antique lakeside ambience, the Royal hospitality and wide range of cuisines and mocktails.

And, not to forget, each spot was bombarded with hundreds and thousands of selfies; cell phone batteries went down by clicking pictures of beautiful faces with their mouth watering food. Here are some of the memoirs compiled for you.

#UBphotowalk – United the Photography Enthusiasts

The most awaited and biggest Photowalk in Udaipur(rather Nationally) got held on Sunday 28th June, 2015. It was organized by UdaipurBlog in association with Streets.of.India in Old City.

UB Photowalk

The main aim to organize this Photowalk was to bring the aspiring and enthusiastic photographers together on a single platform so as to meet and interact with new people carrying same interests and to share a common space to explore, click and enjoy their time.

UB Photowalk

The “Walk of Frame” started from the banks of Lake Pichola, a ghat, well known as Gangaur Ghat. It further went to cover several temples in the region around. Then, after covering Lal Ghat (another ghat), it moved to the streets of Old city including the areas outside City Palace and Jagdish Temple.

A snack break was enjoyed at the famous Lala Mishthan outlet near Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower).

Finally, everyone proceeded to Ambrai Ghat for the final session.

UB Photowalk

Being an event totally new in its kind for Udaipur, it was a wonderful experience to see people zealously taking part in the event. And well, a surprising number of almost 200 turned up on and off for the participation.

After seeing the energy levels of these young professionals, from Udaipur as well as various parts of India, it instilled in us a new level of motivation to carry out such events on a bigger level in future.

And definitely, we would love to organize such events in time ahead with the feedback and suggestions of our Janta to plan for them in a more organized way in future as well.

Here, presenting you some of the most beautiful and captivating captures from the day. Enjoy. Cheers!

9 Myths about Udaipur you should clear up!

Udaipur is one of the most beautiful Cities of India, but being in Rajasthan people have so many myths about Udaipur. So UdaipurBlog.com takes this initiative to clear them all up.

1. Udaipur is not a Desert:

udaipur is not a desert

Yes its true…!! Udaipur is a part and parcel of Rajasthan but its not at all a Desert. The only sand you will see in Udaipur is outside the new construction sites and no where else. Udaipur is a Green City surrounded by beautiful Aravali hills with beautiful Gardens, Lakes and Water Reservoirs.

Udaipur is “The City of Lakes” and “Venice of East” – Mind it…………!!

2. Not everyone wears a Pagri/Dhoti or Colourful Clothes:

Unlike in movies and mindless daily soaps Udaipurites do not wear a Pagri (turban) and dhoti or wear colourful clothes all around. Yes Pagri or Paag as it is called is a traditional wear but not a common wear among the citizens for their daily routine. It is only on the special occasions like marriages people of certain communities wear a paag or pagri.

3. Moustache – “Not every men has it”

It is not necessary that men from Rajasthan need to keep a moustache. Most men do not keep a moustache. Specially the younger men in their 20’s and 30’s love being clean shaved as other men from various states do.

So next time you see a  Happy Men from Udaipur with no moustache, then do not wonder if there is anything wrong with him – “He is just alright without a moustache and He is loving it”

4. “Balika Vadhu”

They Exist but only in TV Programmes.

It is just a TV Series. Balika Vadhu or Baal Vivah is a thing of past and has no relevance in the current times. Udaipur is a modern City with strong uproots to tradition and culture but its far away from the misdeeds of past.

So next time you visit Udaipur and see a cute/pretty young girl in a traditional dress then please don’t misunderstand her as “Balika Vadhu” she might just be ready for some cultural fest and festivities but she is not a “Balika Vadhu”.

5. “Khamma Ghani” – Not everyone does it

Khamma Ghani

Khamma Ghani and Ghani Khamma are not a part of daily greetings to the average citizens.

Yes its true and unfortunate that the famous Greetings in Mewari “Khamma Ghani” is not a part of daily greetings for most of the citizens. Hello, Hii and all other English slangs and greetings are what the younger generation prefers. But this one word “Khamma Ghani” has a magical impact and still sounds the most auspicious greetings of all times.

So next time somebody from Udaipur greets you with a just a Hello …. Hi… or Namaste don’t get disheartened.

6. “Daal Baati” – we do not always keep on munching Baatis

Yes its true that one of the traditional food is Daal Baati and we love it like everybody does. But we do not always keep on munching Baatis every day. We have all sorts of fresh veggies and herbs which we eat regularly. Udaipur is no exception than any other place and we have a lot of variety to eat.

So next time when you come don’t be surprised to see people enjoying all sorts of food stuff from Rajasthani, Punjabi, South Indian, North Indian to Continental, Chinese or others.

7. We are Literates – “Yes almost all of us”

mpuat udaipur

The Literacy rate of Udaipur is high as compared to other cities of Rajasthan and India as well. We have the best of colleges and Universities since the time Udaipur was a Princely State and ruled by the King. The Visionary King Maharana Bhopal itself laid the foundation of providing good education to its citizens the MB College/Science College/BN Sansthan as we know it are all there since very long.

And Yes most of us can speak three languages namely 1. Mewari  2. Hindi and last but not the least English.

So next time when you visit Udaipur and see someone speaking fluent English or clear Hindi then possibly he is from none other place than UDAIPUR.

8. Jeeps and Bullets are not the ONLY Vehicles we posses.

As popularly seen on TV channels and International Broadcasts we do not just drive in Jeeps and ride Bullet Bikes. We have a lot more happening on the roads of Udaipur. The Roads of Udaipur are particularly better than most 2-tier towns of India and we have all sorts of Vehicles and four wheelers ranging from Maruti 800 to Land Rovers, Audis, Mercs, BMW’s, Porsche, Bentley and other High end sedans and convertibles. With almost all the popular two wheelers and four wheeler companies having their Showrooms and sales in Udaipur, Udaipur also tops the list amongst two tier town with the highest number of vehicles according to population.

So don’t be too surprised  next time if you see so many High End cars and two wheelers with their number plates starting from RJ – 27 , Yes RJ – 27 means its from Udaipur

9. Last but not the least

banna and baisa
Photo via: eternalmewarblog.com

“Not every guy is called a BANNA and not every girl is titled BAISA

Yes its true the titles of Banna and Hukum exists but not commonly every guy from Udaipur is called or titled a Banna or Hukum.

Dudes are many, but –

“It takes something special to be titled as Banna Hukum or Baisa”

Do visit once and experience it  😉
