In a remarkable example of medical expertise and perseverance, doctors at Ananta Medical College and Hospital, Rajsamand, have successfully treated one of the lowest birth-weight infants recorded in the Udaipur division. After nearly 140 days of intensive neonatal care, the 570-gram premature baby was discharged in stable condition, weighing 1,400 grams and able to breastfeed.
Executive Director Dr. Nitin Sharma stated that the newborn was brought to the hospital’s emergency department on September 23, 2025, just three days after birth. During examination, neonatologist Dr. Pranay Trivedi and pediatrician Dr. Himanshu Advani were surprised to find the infant weighed only 570 grams. Further details revealed that the baby was born to Meena Lohar at just 25 weeks of pregnancy, categorizing the case as extremely premature.
Recognizing the critical condition, the medical team immediately admitted the infant to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and placed the baby on a ventilator. On the second day, the infant was shifted to Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV). Due to the extremely low birth weight and high risk of infection, antibiotics were administered promptly.
Over the following weeks, the baby required advanced respiratory support, including High-Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) therapy for 25 to 30 days. An eye examination conducted two weeks later detected Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), a condition caused by incomplete retinal development. The infant was treated with an injection of Bevacizumab by an ophthalmologist.
The baby also developed Anemia of Prematurity, necessitating five to six blood transfusions. In addition, the infant experienced weak bone development and later developed Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD) due to prolonged oxygen dependency. Both conditions were managed through continuous treatment, monitoring, and specialized neonatal care.
After nearly 140 days of intensive supervision in the NICU, the infant showed significant recovery. At the time of discharge, the baby weighed approximately 1,400 grams, was stable, and was successfully breastfeeding.
According to the hospital, this is the first case in the Udaipur division in which such an extremely low birth-weight infant has survived after such an extended hospital stay.
The successful outcome was made possible through the dedicated efforts of Dr. Pranay Trivedi, Dr. Himanshu Advani, Dr. Bhavna Vaishnav, Head of Department Dr. Prasoon Bhattacharya, and the entire neonatal care team.
This case stands as a testament to advanced neonatal care and the unwavering commitment of the medical professionals at Ananta Hospital.
