With Instagram booming these days, makeup and hair have found its new dimensions. There are many Indian and International beauty bloggers on Instagram who greatly inspire the masses and have achieved tremendous fame and recognition for their work. Viewers watch these artists online and idolize them. One such artist is Amrit Kaur having an influential Instagram account with 50k global followers.
Amrit Kaur is an Indian bridal makeup and hair expert based out of Pune. She is a professional Makeup and hair artist, well known for her work and recognized globally. ‘Beautifying women’ is her expertise. She has been in the industry for a decade now. She makes D-Day beautiful for about 400 brides annually. She believes in imparting her skill through her academy “The Makeup School” where she personally grooms aspiring makeup artists.
She is in Udaipur today, for a wedding; creating a radiating and beautiful bride!
I went in an in-person conversation with her; undoubtedly she imparts immense knowhow about the world of beauty.
Tell me about your journey so far?
I started off as a fine arts painter which helped me understand beauty and color on every level. Understanding the powder painting, sketching of objects and human figures have helped me a lot in my initial years as a make-up person. I believe that each woman is special, and her makeup should reflect that. After all, we live in an increasingly competitive world where the way you look, impacts your work and life.
From where have you acquired knowledge of Makeup?
I have gathered the knowledge of makeup from a myriad of sources; first from a successful image consultant from the Middle-East, followed by a certification program with the iconic makeup brand Piniour. After this, I did two valuable stints with a Barcelonian specialist trainer who gave me the right technical knowledge about photography makeup.
This was followed by a course in advanced make-up techniques from London. While learning makeup, I recognized the significance of hairstyles and that hair and makeup go hand in hand. Hairstyling is quite essential to complement the entire look of a bride. Hence I took training with a hairstylist in Hong-Kong, which has rounded off my knowledge of beauty.
You have made bridal makeup your forte, why have you chosen this domain?
What I believe in, is ‘transformation’. Usually, brides have raw faces, what I like about them are the simplicity and naturality. It feels great doing the transformation, her twinkling eyes shine so brightly each time – when they look in the mirror post-makeup. It is all about making them feel special and confident, and let them into a more beautiful and elegant self.
What is the current Makeup trend?
Nowadays people are quite aware of makeup and what all suits their skin and skin tone. From pastels to shimmer everything is quite en-vogue. With the onset of winter, people are experimenting with peach shades and berry shades plus ‘the no makeup look’ which is again quite trendy. The nude and subtle shades are liked by many; on the other hand, the bold lip is always in fashion.
What is your take on wedding makeup evolution so far, in India?
Wedding and bridal makeup have evolved a lot in India. Being in the industry now for more than 10 years I have seen how feathery and light makeup has taken over the pancake makeup. The dewy look has captured the choices of many. Light and wearable foundations are available with various brands, suppliers and people are shifting to international brands for their makeup essentials.
Flashy and “over the top makeup” are not preferred anymore. Brides like more blended and subtle or natural look.
Tell me something about wedding season theme for 2017-2018.
Various eminent designers have come up with light and breezy fabrics with oodles of berry colored prints and hues of red. This enables the makeup artists to experiment with more colors to complement the outfits the brides are wearing. People do not hesitate to experiment with the shades of lipstick. A lot of colors are available from big brands like Huda Beauty and women are ready to try-out with their look.
Any advice or tip for the people of Rajasthan?
Rajasthan receives ample amount of sunlight and the skin tone is primarily wheatish. Going for pastel colors is a good option. Also, using a foundation that matches your skin tone will seamlessly blend and give a smooth finish to the skin. In addition to this, a thick concealer can work wonders when used under eyes and on areas to hide pigmentation and other imperfections.
Amrit has received the Icon’s award from the Times of India for hair and makeup and also been recognized as a woman entrepreneur by FICCI Flow which is Asia’s best-known woman entrepreneur’s team. She runs her own academy ‘The Makeup School’ in Pune since 2010 that provides makeup and hairstyling courses for aspiring artists. She trains artists at the Times Learning Centre, Femina Believe; and is also a beauty consultant for several luxury brands.
Her – ‘The Makeup School’ academy next batch starts this coming January 2018 and the registrations are open.
She started her career at a very young age and has created a prominent presence in the beauty industry. She is turning 28 today (5th November)! Let us wish her a very happy birthday, loads of success and a warm welcome to the City of Lakes.

Vaibhav Chhajed the person behind Udaipur’s Giani Ice Cream did his graduation from Delhi. During his grad years, he always went to Giani’s and had his favorite ice cream. His vision of bringing Gianis to Udaipur comes as an addition to his love for ice cream.
As I ran into an interesting conversation with him, he narrated ‘Giani ki Kahani’ in his words, “The venture started in 1956 at Giani-di-Hatti, situated amidst the bazaars of Fatehpuri, Chandni Chowk, and still is known as one of the major landmarks of old Delhi. It was here that Giani Gurcharan Singh, a traditional sweetmeat maker from the then Layallpur (Faisalabad), Pakistan, set up a shop upon migrating to Delhi. He started serving his famous rabri-faluda and mango shakes, with love and best quality ingredients. This struck an instant chord with the discerning residents of the city and in no time at all, Giani (“the learned” in Punjabi), was a well-known name.”
Pretty interesting, isn’t it!!!

A great opportunity for the singers and music composers! So what are you waiting for? Prep yourself and get ready to enter the mainstream of the Indian Music Industry!
Dancing to the beats of international artists, we enjoy a lot. And why not! The beats are electric and so energetic that it compels us to dance and we get carried away. I am sure everyone reading this would agree with my opinion. But sometimes, we need a more subtle music which is away from the hustle and takes us back to our roots, takes us back to the very foundation- that ties us to our birthplace. In the same way, a lot of people prefer listening to folk music, whether they belong to any place; they crave for raw voices, ‘desi’ instruments, and vernacular dances and music.
Everyone has a different taste in music, but when it comes to folk music- we enjoy it hands down.
The music of Langa and Manganiyar of Rajasthan
Who are Langa and Manganiyar?
Langa and Manganiyar are folk musicians who follow a rich oral tradition which they have inherited from their forefathers. These balladeers from Rajasthan sing of everyday chores and emotions. They become highly relatable and probably that is the reason why they are able to mesmerize their listeners.
Manganiyars have expertise over percussion instruments like Dholak and Khadtal, whereas Langas are known for Sarangi, Murali, Surnai, etc. Their musical compositions are masterpieces and are quite complex. The word Manganiyar means those who ask for charity. On different occasions, they would go to patron’s house and sing songs and in turn, would be awarded.
If you go through the roots of these musical groups then we come to know that these Langas and Manganiars were groups of professional musicians, whose music was supported by wealthy landlords and aristocrats. This tradition and hierarchy are maintained till now. Both the groups sing in the same language but their styles differ. This difference of style came into existence as per the tastes of their patrons. Both the communities belong to the Islamic origins but many of their songs are in praise of Hindu deities. Similarly, they are known to celebrate Hindu festivals such as Diwali and Holi. The Manganiar performers evoke the Hindu God Krishna and seek his blessings before the commencement of their music recital.
It is also believed that the Manganiars were musicians of the Rajput courts. They used to accompany their chiefs to war and providing them with entertainment before and after the battles. In addition to this, these singers and musicians also performed at the event of the chiefs’ death and would perform at the ruler’s vigil day and night until the mourning was over.
Coming to the second music community of Rajasthan, the Langas which literally means a song giver is a group of poets, singers, and musicians from the Barmer district of Rajasthan. The Langas are versatile players of the Sindhi Sarangi and the Algoza (double flute), which accompany their magical voices. They used to perform at events like births, and weddings, exclusively for their patrons, who were cattle breeders, farmers, and landowners.
Today, these musical groups perform in various realms and acquire major acclamations not just in the country but also internationally. Rajasthan hosts one of the most energetic and redolent music cultures of the world. The land of sand dunes and camels imparts the fragrance of vernacular music and folklores that touches the hearts of many. These musicians have such an impact on the listeners that they are bound to listen to them again and again.
In Udaipur, you can find these musicians in Shilpgram during the annual Shilpgram Festival quite commonly.
It’s said that music transcends time and space, and indeed it holds true in the case of these folk musicians.
Such is the music of Rajasthan!
If you have ever listened to any Langa or Manganiyar, do let us know your experience in the comment section below.

Udaipur is well-known for lakes and natural beauty of its landscape. The Old city of Udaipur is a hub of various art forms that are unique to Udaipur. Local artists create these paintings and sculptures following traditions of their forefathers. To relive these cultures one has to visit these areas to have a glimpse of the folk customs from their own eyes.
One such art form is ‘Sanjhi’.
This exclusive art form where the canvas is not any cloth or paper, but sheer water is called Jal Sanjhi. Sanjhi is made from the patripada to Amavasya of Ashwin for fifteen days but the preparations start a day earlier on Bhado Purnima.
As one legend says, these paintings came into origin when Lord Krishna’s image was seen in the water by ‘Radha’ in a pond, and the image was outlined with flowers to make a picture of the Lord. Since then it has evolved as Sanjhi which are made to honor the Lord Krishna’s ‘Leela’ in the form of pictorial depiction on water.
In accordance with the above information, Sanjhi paintings are made complimenting Lord Krishna before the onset of the festive season of Navratri. Over 300 years old, this rare art has been kept alive by just a family in Udaipur, who has been practicing it for generations now.
Rajesh Pancholi is the artist that we came in contact; the family has been practicing this art since generations and as per his nephew, Gunjan Pancholi, he is the fourth generation practicing and observing this art.
How are these paintings made?
As described by the Pancholi family and what I watched, I am going to describe it for all you curious people.
We searched for the family and finally got to know where they stay. We waited for the month before the onset of the Navratri season so that we could see it happening in front of us.
As per Gunjan, this art was started in Mathura by his ancestors. These paintings were earlier created for 15 days but due to lack of interest of people and rising inflation (the colors have become expensive), it is quite difficult for them to meet the expenses.
The tale of Lord Krishna with the ‘Shesh Naag’ known as the Naag Leela is what we watched, step by step. It took around three and a half hours to complete the entire painting- floating on clear water.
First and foremost the water is treated one night prior and then placed in a huge vessel where it is made to settle. Once settled, a base color is made to float on water. The base color is spread on the water by the use of a fine sieve little by little. The colors are true stone colors which are used after processing, which turns them turn into a fine powder and increases the ease of use.
After the completion of the base (generally white color), the stencils are kept cautiously on the base to execute the process.
Now talking of the stencils, these used by the Pancholi family are made from thin rice papers and are almost 300 years old. Their forefathers drew on them and cut them. These stencils are preserved by the family and used till date.
One by one these stencils is kept gently on the base color taking reference points. Slowly and gradually the painting emerges into its full shape and exquisiteness. For each step, there is one stencil, even for the flowers and ornamentation. It took 9 stencils to complete the Naag Leela. The last stencil was just for the outline. Real flower petals and sparkles also are included in embellishing the painting.
After Jal Sanjhi being made for three days, the fourth day a more elaborate Sanjhi is made of wood, which carries more intricate work of colors and stencils. The fifth day again marks a creation of Jal Sanjhi. It is a must see!
I was enthralled by the finesse, precision, and patience these artists have. Their hands work very tenderly creating a very fragile art. The beauty lies in the details and the delicacy with which they perform this sacred ritual of creating a divine folk art.
Wanna see these paintings?
Jal Sanjhi is a delight for every art lover. These paintings are open for public viewing every evening at their temple in the Old City during the course of the ‘Shrad Paksha’.
The wood Sanjhi will be made on 19 September 2017. You can visit and see this amazing art form live! Let us know if you went and watched the Sanjhi Art Form.

August 29, 2017, can be marked in the history of Udaipur. Jayant and Jinesh Kothari got a chance to design an exclusive turban for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which was presented to the PM during his visit to The City of Lakes.
In the words of the Kothari duo, it took them 10 days to make the traditional turban commonly known as ‘Mothda’ for the PM. They added that four people worked for 10 days to prepare the bandhej cloth made from the tie-and-dye technique. The cloth was dyed in multiple colors, the turban then was made in a Bhopal Shahi style (one that was worn by the king of Mewar, Maharana Bhopal Singh). Post the tie-dye, the turban was decorated with 54 inches of golden lace and brilliantly bright handmade broaches to make it more royal.
Upon asking about the specially styled turban, Jayant Kothari said that ‘Mothda’ is an ancient turban once worn by the kings of Mewar. The art of preparing ‘Mothda’ was introduced by his forefathers almost a hundred years ago for the Maharanas of the region.
“We decided to prepare a turban using the ancient art as we wanted to show our gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” said the Duo.
Jinesh added that before Prime Minister Modi they had designed and presented special turbans for Sachin Tendulkar and legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan, spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Movie Director-Producer Suraj Badjatya, and the royal Mewar family of Udaipur and many more.
Where can you find the Kothari Bros?
The brothers can be found at Shreenath Marg in Udaipur.
It is a great occurrence for the Kothari Duo, presenting a turban to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself. It is also a proud moment for the city as well that the city’s talent is exhibited in front of the PM of India.
