About Udaipur

Udaipur is located 403 kilometers southeast from capital of the state Jaipur, Rajasthan and 250 kilometers from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It is situated at the southern region of Rajasthan. Udaipur is truly an exquisite city with ample of natural splendor set at every nook and corner. It is amidst in the stunning Aravali Ranges of Rajasthan, India and known for its vivid fine-looking lakes, also called ‘the city of lakes’. The captivating lakes in attendance everywhere make a flawless milieu around the city as well as sets upon many hues, colours and smiles on many people.

This exotic city is full of palaces, temples and havelis present far and wide. The presence of greenery creates a sense of charm and harmony. It’s famed for its heritage and culture around the globe and acts as a centre for the performing arts, painting and crafts. Udaipur is now looked upon and counted among the romantic cities of the World and subsequently called the ‘Venice of East’.

Udaipur is a fascinating blend of sights, sounds and experiences – an inspiration for the imagination of the poets, painters and writers. It has not only lured the foreigners but both Hollywood and Bollywood, because of its scenic beauty. It has now become the fifty most dazzling city in the world but is marching on for more advancement.

 

History of Udaipur

Udaipur was founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II as the capital of Mewar region. Maharana Udai Singh Ji established a residence in the new region. Later in 1568 when the Mughal Emperor Akbar invaded and captured the fort of Chittor, Udai Singh moved the capital to his new residence. And the new place was named Udaipur.

Being surrounded by the natural walls of Aravali hills it became difficult for the Mughals to travel to Udaipur with their huge army, horses and heavy armored forces. Thus the Udaipur remained protected from the influence of Mughals. Udaipur had been one of the old dynasties of the world.

The Udaipur Division comprises Six districts, namely:

  • Banswara
  • Chittorgarh
  • Dungarpur
  • Rajsamand
  • Pratapgarh

 

Geography and Climate of Udaipur

Udaipur is located at 24.58°N 73.68°E at an average elevation of 598.00 m from the sea level. The climate of Udaipur is quite pleasant thus it makes it a perfect tourist destination. The tourism in Udaipur remains at peak from September to March.

The Maximum temperature in summer ranges from 35 to 40 degrees Celsius and Minimum 21 to 26 degrees Celsius. Whereas in winters the Maximum temperature ranges between 21 to 25 degrees Celsius and a Minimum 5 to 11 degrees Celsius.

The average rainfall (precipitation) of Udaipur is around 650 millimeters a year. The city experiences most of its rainfall in the months of July, August and September. The good rains in the season in its surrounding and catchment areas bring heavy inflow of water from various rives into its lakes. This in turns flourishes tourism business in Udaipur.

 

Modes of Transport

Air: The Maharana Pratap Airport or Dabok Airport of Udaipur regularly receives direct flights from major cities such as Delhi, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Mumbai. The airport is located at a distance of 20 kms from the city. Later or sooner it would get upgraded into an international airport.

Rail: Udaipur is served by direct rail links with Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Jodhpur and Chittor with the railway station been just 4 kilometers away from the centre of the city. The broad gauge network connects it directly to the various cities of India like Chittorgarh, Ajmer, Jaipur, Delhi, Indore, Bhopal, Gwalior, Khajuraho and Mumbai. A meter gauge network is available for Ahmedabad. Famous luxury trains, The Palace on Wheels, Royal Rajasthan on Wheels, Maharaja Express and The Indian Maharaja has regular scheduled stops at Udaipur. Udaipur also has another small station Rana Pratap Nagar. Usually all trains has a two minute stoppage which pass through this station.

Road: The National Highway 8 links Udaipur to Delhi as well as Mumbai. There are numerous bus playing on this route, that can also connect other regional centres like Agra, Ahmedabad and few other cities of Rajasthan.

 

The Local Transport

The local conveyance in Udaipur is not yet been up to the standards. Local residents basically use unmetered autos and tourists depend on auto rickshaws and private taxi. The regular and effective local mass transportation system has become a big need for the people of Udaipur. As the local unmetered taxis and rikshaws have become most polluting vehicles in the City.

 

Tourism

Udaipur has emerged as most popular tourist destination in India. The lakes, havelis, palaces its art and culture attracts domestic and foreign tourists. Udaipur has become a favorite destination for Royal Weddings. Many celebrities, businessman and elite personality choose Udaipur for their Marriage parties and ceremonies.
